Interesting Russia. A trip to Nizhny Novgorod. The Volga region.

Russia is not limited to Moscow and St. Petersburg. There are many other interesting places worth visiting. This time we will make a short trip to a city called NN.
In Russia there are 2 cities that have the word Novgorod in their names. The first is Veliky Novgorod, the second is Nizhny Novgorod.
Today our destination is Nizhny Novgorod, or simply Nizhny, as this name is often abbreviated in Russia.
NN is located 400 km east of Moscow on the Volga River.
I go to Nizhny NovgorodN by Lastochka, which departs from Vostochny Station in Moscow. This is a new station (more precisely, a mini-station), it was built in 2021 in order to unload the central stations of Moscow. The road to Nizhny Novgorod takes a little less than 4 hours and on the way the train stops in the city of Vladimir, which was founded in 990.
The city is located at the place where the Oka River flows into the Volga.
The historical center is on the right high bank of the Oka. Here is the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. Many foreigners think that in Russia the Kremlin is only in Moscow. This is wrong.
In Russia, up to 20 kremlins (including wooden ones) have survived to one degree or another.
Well preserved until our days-12. One of them is the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. The Kremlin acquired its modern forms at the beginning of the 16th century, when a stone Kremlin was built instead of a wooden fortress.
The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin differs in its architecture from other similar structures in Russia and is more reminiscent of an Italian fortress. The project was developed with the participation of the Italian architect Pietro Francesco , whom Tsar Vasily 3, the father of Ivan the Terrible, asked to build a stone fortress to protect against Tatar raids.
It should be noted that the Italian architectural school is well represented in many cities of Russia, especially in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin was a subject to numerous sieges by the Kazan Tatars, but had never been captured.
Not far from the Kremlin is the central pedestrian street of Nizhny - Bolshaya Pokrovskaya.
Previously, the nobility settled here. Today it is a place where local residents and tourists like to take walks. Beautiful architecture (bank), a large number of cafes and restaurants.

A little further there are so called Protected Quarters. Once these streets were located on the outskirts of the city, but gradually turned into a center of cultural life, as representatives of the creative intelligentsia began to settle here. In late Soviet times, many of the wooden houses fell into disrepair and only recently have local activists of the movement Tom Sawyer Fest started to restore them step by step. If you want to enjoy the atmosphere of the late 19th century, then this is the right place! For example, the Russian and Soviet writer Maxim Gorky lived in this house .
Just 200 meters from the theater and you have a chance to see a creation of another era.
A residential building in the constructivist style was built in 1929-32. It is called The cultural revolution. The premises of the house are connected by passages at the level of the 2nd and 5th floors. Some of tgem have been demolished. The house also has specially allocated communal blocks. In the 20s of the last century in the USSR, and not only, the ideas of collectivism and life in the commune were strong. Therefore, it was assumed that personal space is required by residents of the house only for sleeping. Cooking, eating, washing, communicating with neighbors had to be done in specially designated areas.
Today this house is not in the best shape, although people still live in it. I hope that the NN authorities will restore this house so that it can also take its rightful place in the architectural ensemble of the city.

In Rozhdestvenskaya, life is in full swing, and this street looks more natural than Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. And I personally like it more. Ignore the fact that many summer verandas are empty - this is not because people do not have money to go to restaurants (a common stereotype that I sometimes find in comments from foreign people). No, it’s just that in central Russia the season of verandas opens in May and they are being prepared now. In general, there are a lot of people in cafes and restaurants, despite the fact that I was in Nizhny during the week.
On the opposite bank of the Oka River from the center is Strelka, the place where the Oka flows into the Volga.
Previously, there was a fair well known all over the country and a port - one of the largest river ports in Russia.

0:00 Start

0:30 Winter Palace

I am running short of words after exploring the Hermitage museum. The whole experience was captivating. I could not see it fully, but what I witnessed is beyond explanation. You need the whole day to see the museum and there are always long queues of people waiting to explore the magnificent museum. It is worth watching and tickets usually start from 700 rubles. If you want to skip lines, tickets can cost you between $40-60. This place is highly recommended to visit but be ready to exhaust one day. Decide properly if you want to visit the palace, especially if you are on a short trip to Saint-Petersburg.

1:46 The Palace Square

On my first day in Saint Petersburg, I was just rambling around Nevsky avenue and walked about 1.5 km to the place square without realizing that it is a popular landmark. I checked on google and it happened to be Palace Square right opposite to the State Hermitage Museum. I was stunned to see the enormous square. You will find a lot of street musicians and activities happening around. Please do not forget to capture panorama shots of the whole square. It is worth watching so be there.

3:10 Kazan Cathedral

Kazan cathedral is located near Nevsky ave metro station on Nevsky Avenue street. It is opposite to the Savior of Spilled blood church. The entry to Kazan cathedral is free however, photography is not allowed inside. The building has an aesthetic touch to it and reveals a lot about its history. Around the area, you have shopping stores and a busy market. You can spot the iconic church easily while roaming around the streets of Nevsky avenue.

3:51 Savior on the Spilled Blood

Incredible cathedral from the inside and one of the main attractions of Saint Petersburg. The ticket costs 350 rubles which is cheap. It is worth watching. Opposite of Savior on the Spilled Blood, is Kazan cathedral which just 5-10 mins walk away. The place around the church is very peaceful. You will find many souvenir shops, eatery stalls, and painters. Despite the touristy spot, it is clean and peaceful.

4:56 BrStrelka Vasil'yevskogo Ostrova

I was here but did not know whether I was at Strelka Vasil'yevskogo. As you proceed from Winter Palace across the street you have a big view of the Neva river. Make your passage to the left and cross over a bridge and you will find yourself at Strelka Vasil'yevskogo Ostrova. Along the way, you can capture some beautiful views of the river. Do activities such as river cruise, dine in restaurants, buy souvenirs, etc. You can spot many tourists in that area. It's a suitable and safest route to Peter and Paul fortress especially if you are walking.

6:07 Peter and Paul Fortress

What a grand fortress. 2.5 km from Nevsky ave, it is located on an island across the Neva River. I walked up to the fortress from my hotel at Nevsky avenue and enjoyed the sightseeing all the way to my destiny.  You can snack on some ice cream to cool off and have beverages. There is a convergence of people every day at Peter and Paul fortress due to its popularity. You can take tickets to the cathedral which costs about 500 rubles but it is worth spending. The glittering chandeliers and colorful art of the cathedral make the whole experience exclusive. Usually, it is closed on Thursdays. This place is recommended to visit. I give it a thumbs up.

6:56 Bronze Horseman

There are big lawns around the statue of the Bronze horseman. The major landmark around is St Issac Cathedral. You can spot Indian restaurants Tandoori Nights and The Indian restaurant.

7:51 Anichkov Bridge

Nice place to hang out, busy, and a beautiful street. Great river views to capture with some amazing shots.

Yaroslavl, Russia. Best Russian historical city to visit

Situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl Rivers around 300 km north-east of Moscow, the historic city of Yaroslavl developed into a major commercial centre from the 11th century.

There are two major passenger railway stations in Yaroslavl. They can be easily mixed up. The one you are probably looking for is called ‘Yaroslavl-Glavny’. The city is connected to Moscow by a fast electric train service with comfortable seats. Just 3 hours from the capital of Russia and you are in the very centre of Yaroslavl.

Yaroslavl is one of the Golden Ring cities, a group of historic cities northeast of Moscow that have played an important role in Russian history. The historic part of the city is a World Heritage Site.

One of the central squares of Yaroslavl is called Sovetskaya. Ironically, the most beautiful and notable orthodox church in the town is located just here. This is the Church of Elijah the Prophet, which is a very prominent example of the way in which the city developed in the 17th century.

The church of the Epiphany is an Orthodox church in Yaroslavl. Built in 17th century as well, it is known for beautiful fresco paintings and tiled decoration of facades.

Another famous cathedral in Yaroslavl, Uspensky, was built in the 13th century and destroyed in the Soviet era, the city park was created on its place. The cathedral was rebuilt in 2010, its construction was completed to the 1000th anniversary of Yaroslavl.

While walking around the city centre you will definitely find this Kremlin-alike construction. The truth is it is not the Yaroslavl Kremlin, it is the Cathedral of the Spassky (St Savior) Monastery. The Cathedral is the oldest buildings in the city. Typical for a Russian monastery of the Middle Ages, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery in Yaroslavl was not built to be no more than a place of worship, but also to be a citadel and kremlin in case, in times of war.

Just near this monastery you can find a little structure, the Lady of Kazan Chapel. If you have a one thousand rubles banknote, you can find it there as well along with the monument to Yaroslav the Wise, the founder of the city.

1000 Anniversary of Yaroslavl was celebrated in Russia in 2003. Huge part of the historic centre was renovated with some new sightseeings constructed. Strelka park is one of them, it’s a huge promenade area at the bank of the Volga river with beautiful views. The Volga embankment is a good example of urban planning in the classicist style; built in the 1840s, this promenade walk has remained a favourite place for residents to take a stroll and relax ever since.

Moscow - St. Petersburg 24 Hour Roundtrip, City Highlight Tour in 4K

Skip to 03:22 to enjoy a relaxing 4K Tour / Montage of Saint Petersburg's most famous sights and attractions! It's every bit like exploring the city on your own, but faster!

What was supposed to be a quick work trip to St.Petersburg grew into a rather challenging video idea - is it possible to see all the sights of Saint Petersburg on foot in the span of a day? What if the day starts in Moscow? And what if you need to get back home before 24 hours tick by? The short answer to all these questions is yes... If you get a bit creative.

I invite you to follow along as I take on the Northern Capital, as it's often called in Russia. The trip, by car, would take eight hours. By train- a little over ten. A quick flight turns into a five hour ordeal given airport security and traffic.

Thankfully, the Sapsan Bullet train gave me just the head start I needed to speedrun Saint Petersburg. When everything was said and done, I was back at home exactly 22 hours after I started, having traveled 1400 km by train and 32km by foot. I won't go into how many cups of coffee it took to fuel this random act of tourism.

I managed to capture all the most famous sights Saint Petersburg has to offer, but didn't venture inside any of them, with the exception of St. Isaacs Cathedral and its Observation Deck. The route I chose turned into a pretty good Meet the City kind of tour. Some of the footage I captured is really breathtaking, and I certainly hope you enjoy watching the sights of St. Pete as much as I enjoyed filming them. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch!

If you happen to be in Saint Petersburg for just a day, don't fret - you have all the time you need to see... Everything! If you have questions about the city or how to get around it, let me know.

Also, if you're interested in reading about any of the landmarks and historical buildings you'll see in the montage, here is a list of the most prominent ones, mostly in the order that they appear:

1.) Nevsky Avenue
2.) Armenian Apostile Church
3.) St. Petersburg Duma
4.) Gostiniy Dvor
5.) Comedia Theater
6.) Nepredskazuyemyy Predskazatel'
7.) National Library of Russia
8.) Monument to Catherine II
9.) Aleksandinskiy Theater
10.) Belmond Grand Hotel Europe
11.) Mikhailovskiy Square
12.) Monument to Alexander Pushkin
13.) Russian Museum
14.) Kazan Cathedral
15.) Monument to Kutuzov
16.) Singer building, Dom Knigi
17.) Lutheran Church of Saint Petri
18.) Stroganov Palance
19.) Monument to Gogol
20.) Italian Bridge
21.) Savior on Spilled Blood Cathedral
22.) St. Michael's Castle
23.) Panteleymonovskiy Bridge
24.) Suvorovskaya Square
25.) Fregat Blagodat
26.) Troitsky Bridge
27.) Marble palace
28.) Russian maritime register of shipping
29.) Peter and Paul fortress
30.) Strelka Vasilievskogo ostrova
31.) Rostralnaya kolonna
32.) Winter palace and Hermitage
33.) Alexander column
34.) Triumphal arch and Palace square
35.) Admiralteystvo
36.) St Isaac's cathedral
37.) Presidential library and Constitutional court
38.) Bronze horseman
39.) Artillery museum
40.) Saint Petersburg Mosque
41.) Atlanty

If you enjoyed the video, it would be great if you'd subscribe for more! Also, I'd love to hear your ideas on what you'd like to see me film in Russia, or otherwise!
