Retezat Mountains - Wild camping in the Romanian Carpathians ( Part 1 )
In the summer of 2019 we've spent a couple of weeks hiking through the Central Carpathians in Romania. One of the fewest places in Europe where you don't have to be in a campsite to pitch your tent.
We spent a few days crossing the high Retezat Massif reaching it's highest point at 2509m and camping by the largest glacier lake in the country. We had rain, sun, steep ridges and most importantly fun. We drank ice cold water from the streams and watched the stars enjoying the solitude and complete silence, but eventually went back to out car and continued to the next mountain range.

Gypsies are better than Romanians, says Mariana, a 27-year old Romanian woman, who lives in a Roma (Gypsy) community. She started to write letters to Ovidiu while he was in prison, on behalf of his illiterate parents. After he got out of jail they fell in love. Now, they live together, a Roma/non-Roma couple without official documents, in Sperantza, a former chicken farm at the edge of Piatra Neamt in northeastern Romania. Their home is small, they have no stove, no heating and no running water. A nearby pump is the only source of drinking water for the entire community.
