Stonehouse is a town in the Stroud District of Gloucestershire in southwestern England. It is home to a number of business and industrial parks which are home to the Severnside Dairy operated by Müller and other large companies including Schlumberger, Renishaw, Delphi Automotive, Lister Shearing and Dairy Partners. The town centre is 2.5 miles east of the M5 motorway, junction 13. Stonehouse railway station has a regular train service to London.
The town is situated approximately 9 miles south of Gloucester city centre and 3.5 miles west of central Stroud, though following recent development it is partially contiguous with the Ebley district of Stroud. Stonehouse's population in 2016 was estimated at over 8,000 residents.
Stonehouse was mentioned in Willam the Conqueror's Domesday Book written in 1086. There was a manor house built in stone – quite different from the many wattle and daub buildings that were normally found. And so the area was named Stanhus in the book.
Doverow Hill is a former quarry and there are many surrounding hills and a small cliff that looks out onto the whole of Stonehouse.
The stone which gave the town its name was replaced by red brick as the builder's material of choice . Due to the availability of raw materials in Stonehouse, brickmaking began there in 1856 with evidence of possible prior brickmaking as early as 1839 or 1840 and of as many as thirteen brickmaking sites altogether.
A community centre is located near the Town's High Street, together with a festival of good shops, Post Office (in the supermarket), Town hall, butchers, banks, several food places and a building society. The town is well served by doctors and dentists. Bus services to Gloucester and Stroud are provided by Stagecoach, with other services to Cam, Dursley and the Stanleys.
Good road communication is provided, with the M5 situated with 2 miles of Stonehouse town centre, with the major industrial area located to the west of the town off the A419. The town is served by Stonehouse railway station on the Golden Valley Line, with a good and frequent service to London.
Stonehouse is very well situated for business and business growth due to its central UK location and close proximity to the motorway networks of the M5 & M4. Today Stonehouse has a large number of residential housing estates, including council housing and a small high street.

Stone is a Civil parish and market town in Staffordshire, England, 7 miles north of Stafford and 7 miles south of Stoke-on-Trent. It was an urban district council and a rural district council before becoming part of the Borough of Stafford in 1974.
Stone lies within the territory of the Iron Age Celtic tribe 'the cornovii' (people of the horn; perhaps a horned god or topographical feature) mentioned by Ptolemy 2nd century AD in Geographia. To the northwest of Stone lies one of their hill forts which overlooks the Trent and perhaps the salt production in the region.
The early history of Stone is unclear and clouded by the 12th century medieval romance concerning the murder of the Saxon princes Wulfad and Rufin by their father Wulfhere of Mercia who reputedly had his base near Darleston (Wulfherecester). The murder of Wulfad in the 7th century and his subsequent entombment under a cairn of stones is the traditional story (described as 'historically valueless' by Thacker 1985: 6).
Stone Urban District was an urban district. It was based on the Stone civil parish which equates to the town of Stone. There were two amendments in parts of the Stone Rural parish in Stone Rural District were transferred in. The district was abolished by the Local Government Act 1972, and replaced with Stafford Borough Council and Stone Town Council. The latter publishes a history of Stone.
Stone stands in the valley of the River Trent, and was an important stopping-off point for stagecoaches on one of the roads turnpiked in the 18th century. A directory for 1851 says that Stone was a very lively town, and a great thoroughfare for coaches, carriers and travellers…. No fewer than 38 stage coaches passed through the town daily. The main coaching route was the London to Holyhead route, via Watling Street as far as Lichfield and then from Lichfield to Holyhead via the A51. To support the coaching trade Stone was a principal stopping point with many coaching inns to refresh both horses and travellers. Notable hostelries include the Crown Hotel, Crown & Anchor, Red Lion and the Black Horse Inn.
The River Trent, which runs through the town, had been used for cargo-carrying vessels since Roman times but further inland smaller boats could only be used. Seasonal fluctuations in water depth proved insurmountable, although cargo could be carried from the sea as far south as Wilden Ferry (southeast of Derby), where the River Derwent joins the Trent and increases the quantity of water, then onwards by road. Prior to tarmac roads, journeys overland by roads were slow and delicate wares were prone to breakages over the rough terrain.
Stone Parish Church, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, is at the south end of the town located on what used to be Stone Priory. It was commenced in 1753, and finished in 1758. The present clock dates from 1896. Stone railway station, on the West Coast Main Line, serves the town. An hourly semi-fast direct service has been operated by London Midland trains since 2008. This runs south to London Euston via Stafford and the Trent Valley line, and north to Crewe via Stoke-on-Trent. Passenger numbers have risen 152 per cent since 2008, and at June 2012 three more services per day are being planned to cope with demand
James Brindley, the canal builder, put forward the scheme to build what he called the Grand Trunk Canal to connect the two rivers, Mersey and Trent in 1766. It was backed by Josiah Wedgwood who saw that it offered an efficient way to bring raw materials to the potteries and to transport finished wares to his customers. By 29 September 1772 (Brindley died on 27 September), 48 miles of the Grand Trunk Canal (now known as the Trent and Mersey Canal) from Wilden Ferry to Stone was navigable — the length past Burton-on-Trent being completed in 1770.
On completion of the Star Lock a grand opening was held, and during this opening a cannon was fired in celebration. However disaster struck and the cannon damaged the new lock, requiring a re-build. Stone became the headquarters of the canal company with its office at Westbridge House, sited then below Star Lock on what is now Westbridge Park. The offices were moved later to Stoke-on-Trent.

Our visit to the historic Cinque port town of Rye in East Sussex
A walking tour around the historic medieval town of Rye in East Sussex.
We start the walk at the Landgate, the only remaining medieval city gate remaining, dating from 1329, and climb up East Cliff taking in the view over green fields that would have once been a coastline and a gateway to the English Channel.
Turning the corner, we head along Rye's High Street and take in the individual nature of the shops in Rye. We then detour up East Street to the English artist Paul Nash's home before rounding the corner into Market Street and discovering Rye's Townhall & Tourist Information Centre.
Passing the town hall we head up Lion Street to the Church of Saint Mary, Rye, and head around Church Square before moving on to the Ypres Tower, also known as Rye Castle, and taking in the views from the Gun Garden.
A stroll around the cobbled Church Square, passing homes built in the times of the Tudors, before heading onto West Street, where we find the National Trust Lamb House, once home to literary figures such as E.F. Benson & Henry James.
From here, we head down the beautiful Mermaid Street, said to be the most Instagrammed street in England, before popping into the historic Mermaid Inn and experiencing The Giant's Fireplace bar.
After our brief break, we continue down Mermaid Street to the Strand and its array of antiques & collectables stores in the former warehouses on Rye's quayside.
Finally, we return via The Mint and onto the High Street as the light starts to fall.
We complete our tour by returning to the Landgate at Dusk.

Nailsworth is a town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England, lying, in one of the Stroud Valleys in the Cotswolds, on the A46 road. It had a population of 5,800 at the 2011 census, and lies 4 miles south of Stroud. In ancient times Nailsworth was a settlement at the confluence of the Avening Valley and the Woodchester Valley, on the Nailsworth Stream. Among many notable historic medieval buildings in the area are Beverston Castle and Owlpen Manor.
In the modern era Nailsworth was a small mill town and centre for brewing. It was connected directly to the UK national rail network between 1867 and 1947 with a station that was the terminus of the Stonehouse and Nailsworth Railway. The River Frome, which runs through the town, was also the site of an important trout fishery. These days Nailsworth is visited in the summer by walkers. It holds a farmers' market every fourth Saturday in the month. Local events such as the market and the Nailsworth Festival are announced by the town crier.
Over the past decade the small town centre has been reinvigorated. Besides numerous restaurants and cafes, it now contains a number of shops, including bakers, a delicatessen with a fishmonger, one hardware store, butchers, craft shops, bookshops, art galleries and a gardening shop. Nailsworth is a Fairtrade Town and is twinned with the French village of Lèves, with which it enjoys an exchange visit in alternating years.

Two Hours in Stonehouse
Stonehouse is a small town some 3 miles west of Stroud in Gloucestershire. The town centre is simply one main street with shops either side and a railway station located a short distance from this road.
The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1886 with its original name of Stanhus, so called because the manor house was built of stone. The woollen industry was important to Stonehouse, first as producers of wool and later as experts in textiles. The small mills of the 17th and 18th century supported work at home for the growing population of the village, later changing to a factory system. As the textile industry declined, Stonehouse remained a thriving place as smaller businesses of every type took over.
Today there are a number of business and industrial parks close to the town, with more development planned for the future.
In 1779 the nearby Stroudwater Canal opened providing a link between the Severn and Thames. The canal is currently being restored by a large number of volunteers, providing pleasant walks along the waterway.

Charming Stone-Built English Village WALK in the English Countryside - BOURTON
Todays video is in the English Countryside in Bourton, which is a small Vale village close to the boundary with Wiltshire.
Bourton was part of the parish of Shrivenham until 1867.[1] Bourton was part of Berkshire until the 1974 local government boundary changes transferred the Vale of White Horse to Oxfordshire.
Unlike other nearby villages, particularly those to the south, there are no chalk/thatch cottages here. Instead, the cottages are built in the local grey stone, most with slate or stone roofs.
The impressive looking village Hall was originally a Baptist chapel and is a fine example of Victorian Chapel Architecture.
