Places to see in ( Steyning - UK )

Steyning is a small rural town and civil parish in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England. It is located at the north end of the River Adur gap in the South Downs, four miles north of Shoreham-by-Sea. The smaller villages of Bramber and Upper Beeding constitute, with Steyning, a built-up area at this crossing-point of the river.

Steyning has existed since Anglo-Saxon times. Legend has it that St. Cuthman built a church, at one time dedicated to him, later to St Andrew, and now jointly to St Andrew and St Cuthman, where he stopped after carrying his mother in a wheelbarrow. Several of the signs that can be seen on entering Steyning bear an image of his feat. King Alfred the Great's father, Ethelwulf of Wessex, was originally buried in that church, before being transferred to Winchester – a Saxon grave slab (possibly his) remains in the church porch.

The Steyning Line railway from London to Shoreham arrived in Steyning in 1861 and a station was opened to serve the town, see the black line and station in the map displayed. Steyning Town Hall, (currently an estate agents) at 38 High Street, was built in 1886.

The legendary Irish politician Charles Stewart Parnell married 'Kitty' O'Shea (niece of Lord Hatherley) here in 1891, the culmination of the affair that saw his fall from power, catastrophically dividing Irish politics. In Steyning there is access to a variety of facilities including four public houses, the award-winning Steyning Tea Rooms, four estate agents and barclays bank. There is a leisure centre, which was built with National Lottery funding. It has a modern health centre, a public library and the Steyning Museum. A spring fair is held on the Spring bank holiday (the last Monday in May) The Monarch's Way long-distance footpath skirts the southern end of the town.

The Steyning Festival was founded in 2006 by Ann Poupard, a resident of the town. The event is now biennial and runs for two weeks at the end of May/start of June. It features theatre, music, literature, talks, walks, community events and more. In 2009, the Steyning Festival was awarded a lottery grant to bring international artist and psychogeographer Chris Dooks to Steyning for a month-long residency, resulting in a free MP3 tour.

Midhurst Castle | Cowdray Castle | Cowdray Heritage Trust | Cowdray Ruins | #castle #attractions

Cowdray was a Tudor nobelman’s grand mansion, built between 1520 and 1542, one of several created by influential memebers of Henri VIII’s court,.

The main construction of this mansion work took over 20 years and the Cowdray refelected personl influences, wealth and political power of its builders

Sir David Owen started Cowdray between 1520-30 after he had cleared the site of the earlier building. He only completed half the work, but it seems likely that the roughly square plan with the quadrangular court that was later finished was park of his design.

In 1533 the owner is the house at that time, Sir William Fitzwilliam was granted a special licence by Henri VIII to empark 600 acres of land in Eastbourne and Midhurst to be called and named the park of Cowdray forever.

A devastating fire in 1793 destroyed Cowdray. The remains now attracts photographers, artists and writers.

The romantic view has attracted lots of tourists and some short film makers.

The car park access is via A286. The carpark is free for 1 hour **** Please remember to place a free ticket with your car registration number. If you don’t place a ticket, you will get parking fine. This carpark is monitored with CCTV number plate recognition .

This is a beautiful place to visit if you are a nature lover. The river “Rother” adds the additional beauty to this attraction. Its recommended to wear waterproof shoes if you are walking around.

Places to see in ( Hove - UK )

Hove is a town on the south coast of England, immediately to the west of its larger neighbour Brighton, with which it forms the unitary authority Brighton and Hove. Hove forms a single conurbation with Brighton and some smaller towns and villages running along the coast. As part of local government reform, Brighton and Hove were merged, to form the borough of Brighton and Hove in 1997

In 2000, the new borough officially attained city status. Hove is bordered by Brighton to the east and Portslade-by-Sea in the west, the distance between the boundaries being some 2.25 mi (3.75 km).

Hove has a comprehensive public transport system including buses to all districts, a bus monitoring system accessible via the internet and with displays at some bus stops (a system integrated with Brighton), and taxis which are able to pick up across the city of Brighton and Hove. Hove has three railway stations. Hove railway station has direct access to the Brighton main line to London via a loop eliminating the need to go through Brighton. Hove is on the West Coastway Line, as are Aldrington and Portslade and West Hove stations. A 'halt' stop at Holland Road, between Hove and Brighton, was in operation from 1905 to 1956. Direct train journeys to London take just over an hour, and to Brighton, a few minutes.

Places to see in ( Shoreham by Sea - UK )

Places to see in ( Shoreham by Sea - UK )

Shoreham-by-Sea is a seaside town and port in West Sussex, England. Shoreham by Sea is bordered to its north by the South Downs, to its west by the Adur Valley and to its south by the River Adur and Shoreham Beach on the English Channel.

Shoreham by Sea lies in the middle of the ribbon of urban development along the English south coast, approximately equidistant from the city of Brighton and Hove to the east and the town of Worthing to the west. Shoreham covers an area of 984.88 hectares.

Old Shoreham dates back to pre-Roman times. St Nicolas' Church, inland by the River Adur, is partly Anglo-Saxon The name of the town has an Old English origin. The town and port of New Shoreham was established by the Norman conquerors towards the end of the 11th century.

Shoreham Beach, to the south of the town, is a shingle spit deposited over millennia by longshore drift, as an extension to Lancing parish in the west. This blocks the southerly flow of the River Adur which turns east at this point to discharge into the English Channel further along the coast at a point that has varied considerably over time.

Shoreham Airport lies to the west of the main town and has been in private ownership since 2006. It is the UK's oldest licensed airport still in operation and has a 1936 Grade II*-listed Art Deco terminal building. The town is served by Shoreham-by-Sea railway station, located on the West Coastway Line. Local bus services are provided by the Brighton & Hove bus company, Stagecoach South and a local town route is operated by Compass Travel. Shoreham Tollbridge crosses the River Adur in the west of the town. This bridge is a Grade II* listed building and was the last Sussex toll bridge in use.
