We LOVE visiting the best small towns in America. On our way home from biking the Natchez Trace Parkway we stopped in Laurel, Mississippi to see what makes this small town authentically wonderful. While the HGTV show “Hometown” is based here, the town’s revitalization both in business and real estate in Laurel goes back before the show ever hit TV. People love this town because for many, it’s home. It’s a place where friends gather, businesses grow, and people invest in the town that they all have in common.
From delicious cookies at Sweet Somethings Bakery and shopping at Southern Antiques, to strolling the giant oak lined streets of some of the best neighborhoods in Laurel, MS surrounded by some of the prettiest houses in Laurel, our one day in this town wasn’t long enough. We could have visited for days to meet more locals and eat and shop more of the best local places. If you’ve ever thought about visiting or moving to Laurel, Mississippi, checkout these places while you’re there! Have a suggestion of a place we should visit next time we pass through Mississippi? STATEN ISLAND New York City Drone Video
Staten Island was first inhabited by the prehistoric Clovis Culture 14,000 years ago. By the time of European discovery, in 1520, the Native American Lenape people inhabited the lands. The Dutch settled here in 1609 and in 1729 the English setup Richmond Town here as the island's capitol. During the American Revolution, Staten Islanders were staunchly in favor of the crown and more than 1400 ships docked here as they prepared to attack. In 1898, Staten Island officially became part of New York City.
Staten Island's north shore is the most urban part of the island and includes historic neighborhoods, like St. George, Tompkinsville, Clifton and Stapleton. Definitely check out the St. Paul's Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, for amazing Victorian houses.
The east shore is home to the 2.5-mile F.D.R. Boardwalk, which is the fourth-longest boardwalk in the world. It contains numerous parks and monuments to the veterans of the World Wars, Korean War and Vietnam War. This part of the island contains some of the most beautiful park landscapes.
The island's south shore is home to the 17th-century Dutch and French Huguenot settlements from the 1960s. You can still find iconic sites throughout these neighborhoods and some of the best natural views New York City has to offer.
The West Shore is the least populated and most industrial part of the island. It contains the legendary Boat Graveyard, where more than 100 wood and metal boats from three centuries have their final resting place. This is one of NYC's most industrious areas.
Staten Island is an incredible place. It's a rural safe-haven in America's largest city and a reminder of where we've been and where we're going. It's most definitely worth a visit!

There are 39 gates at KCI Airport with room to expand to 50! While the security features of the old terminals left A LOT to be desired, the new set-up is smooth with 16 lanes! It took us no time at all to get through the Airport experience. I even had time to get an airport haircut!

Stapleton Airport Concourse E
This is footage from a visit to Stapleton Airport in July of 1990, with me walking through the upper and lower concourse. Sorry, at age 13 I was not the best videographer and apologize for any motion sickness. The footage shows Concourse E, the fifth and newest Concourse at Denver's Stapleton International Airport.
Concourse E opened in summer 1987 and cost $55 million to build. With 55,000 square feet and 21 gates, Concourse E was designed for all non-hub carriers, which meant any airline serving Stapleton so long as you were not Continental or United. However, United Airlines did actually have some gates on E.
Concourse E consisted of three modular increments with high ceilings, elevated moving walkways and lots of interior landscaping. The exterior design, in a modern red sandstone color and dark smoke glass windows were in sharp contrast to the design of the older Stapleton concourses. At the time of completion, the worst kept secret in Denver was that Stapleton Airport was to be soon replaced by a new airport in the northeast part of Denver (fast forward to DIA in 1995), so it was designed to easily be converted to office space once Stapleton was closed. However, upon Stapleton's closure, it was one of the first concourses to come down, the building having aged less than 10 years.
When traveling out of Stapleton in the late eighties and early nineties, I traveled through Concourse E quite often, flying to Pittsburgh on non-hub US Air and remember it fondly. This concourse was a forerunner to the modern airport concourses we are familiar with now, with high ceilings, spacious walkways and roomy boarding areas.
