Places to see in ( St Austell - UK )

Places to see in ( St Austell - UK )

St Austell is a civil parish and major town in Cornwall, England, UK. It is situated on the south coast, approximately 10 miles south of Bodmin and 30 miles west of the border with Devon.

As in much of Cornwall and neighbouring counties, tourism is increasingly important to St Austell's economy. Tourists are drawn to the area by nearby beaches and attractions such as the Eden Project, sited in a former clay pit, and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. The China Clay Country Park, in a former china-clay pit two miles north of the town, tells the story of the men, women and children who lived, worked and played in the shadow of the clay tips around St Austell.

St Austell is home to several public houses, numerous high street retailers, and several independent shops, many of which cater for tourists. The town has a small museum which is situated in the Market House. A Brewery Museum and Visitor Centre is situated on the site of the St Austell Brewery in Trevarthian Road.

Notable Cornish architect Silvanus Trevail designed a number of St Austell's buildings and houses, including the Thin End and the Moorland Road terrace. Of other notable architects from St Austell include John Goode, who contributed considerably during the 1970s to residential developments in the area. Pevsner remarks in his guide to Cornwall that the following buildings are notable:

The Parish Church
The Old Town Hall, in Italian Renaissance style, 1844
Friends Meeting House, 1829, a plain granite structure
Masonic Hall, South Street, 1900[20] and is home to nine Masonic bodies
White Hart Hotel: once contained panoramic wallpaper of the Bay of Naples by Dufour (now in the Victoria and Albert Museum)[22]
Holy Well at Menacuddle.
Three buildings of the 1960s: Penrice School, 1960; Public Library, 1961; former Magistrates' Court, 1966.

St Austell railway station was opened by the Cornwall Railway on 4 May 1859 on the hillside above the town centre. Two branch lines west of the town were later opened to serve the china clay industry; the Newquay and Cornwall Junction Railway which is still partly open, and the short-lived Trenance Valley line. The town's bus station faces the entrance to the railway station to offer an easy interchange between buses and trains. National Express coach services call here, a dedicated link operates to the Eden Project, and local buses operate to villages such as Fowey and Mevagissey.

My Top 10 Things to do in Cornwall

After my trip to Cornwall in the summer of 2021, I have put together a top 10 list of activities and places, ranked in order personal to me.

If you've watched the other 19 videos in this travel vlog series, do you have any ideas as to what might make the cut?

Across my time in Cornwall I visited Rocky Valley Tintagel, took a Camel Trail bike ride into Padstow, saw Enys Dodnan Arch just along from Lands End Cornwall, visited the National Trust Godolphin, wandered past Botallack Mine, took part in a Kernow Coasteering tour at Praa Sands, ate lunch at Nanjizal Beach, hiked past Porthgwarra Beach took a tour around the National Trust Cornwall 's Levant Beam Engine, stayed in some really quirky Cornwall Accommodations, went on a Waverunner Safaris Carlyon Bay, paid through the nose to visit the not so tranquil St Nectan's Glen, played like a big kid at Glendurgan Maze, looked on in awe as we hiked down the coastal cliffs to Porthcurno beach, Completed sections of the SW Coast Path walk, notably from Lizard Point to Kynance Cove along the Lizard peninsula, from Boscastle to Tintagel and Lands End to Porthcurno Beach, taking in a performance at the Minack Theatre along the way. I went on the Godolphin Hill walk and explored Trengwainton gardens, and not to forget the scenic St Erth to St Ives Train ride.

Cornwall Best Beaches (Top 10)

Cornwall is famous for the quality and variety of its beaches. The long, exposed stretches of sand on the north coast, such as Perranporth and Godrevy, provide excellent surfing conditions and are great places to walk on a stormy winter's day. The more sheltered sandy coves of the south coast, such as Porthcurno and Praa Sands, offer excellent swimming and protection from cold northerly winds. Remote beaches such as Harlyn and Kynance offer the chance to really get away from it all, while bustling town beaches, such as Marazion and Porthmeor, are great places to spend the day, with plenty of cafes, restaurants and galleries within easy walking distance. Here we have picked out our 'Top Ten beaches in Cornwall.

Welcome To The Video Of Today - Visiting St. Austell, Cornwall, UK

One of Cornwall's largest towns is the historic market town of St Austell, which is only a few miles from the sea. It had been a significant mining town for generations, but it wasn't until a discovery in the middle of the 18th century that the town began to gain notoriety. Chemist William Cookworthy from Devon found significant china clay deposits nearby. The mineral is utilised in a wide range of sectors, including paper, medicines, and textiles, in addition to the creation of porcelain. From the 18th century onward, the extraction of china clay became the town's principal business and propelled its growth.

Due to the usage of less expensive foreign sources, the china clay industry is currently on the decline. However, the industry has altered more than just the town; it has also left its impact on the region around St. Austell. The clay pit remnants that have grown into enormous, initially white, conical mounds are known as the Cornish Alps. Some of these have been levelled and landscaped in recent years to create a less bizarre appearance. With interactive exhibits situated in 19th-century clay works, the neighbouring Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum offers an interesting look into the manufacturing of china clay. The St Austell Brewery is another longstanding local business. Walter Hicks founded the brewery in 1851, and it has since expanded to become easily the largest brewery in Cornwall with a number of pubs. The public is welcome to take tours of the brewery.

The town's proximity to the impressive Eden Project, which is barely 2 miles away, may currently be its main lure. Today, Eden is without a doubt Cornwall's most visited tourist destination. It's interesting that the biomes were constructed inside a former china clay mine. The Eden Project's environmental and moral goals have been extensively discussed, yet there is a tonne of evidence to the contrary, as well as the reality that it has undoubtedly increased local traffic!

Although the town itself has little to offer tourists, it serves as a prime location for some of Cornwall's most picturesque beaches. In reality, the Cornish Riviera is another name for this coastline. Try Carlyon Bay if you're searching for a busy resort. Duporth and Porthpean are two additional well-liked local beaches. Polkerris is a great place to swim if you like a more intimate, calm setting. Charlestown's charming harbour, where you can frequently see vintage sailing ships, serves as St Austell's port. The harbour has been used as the backdrop for several movies and television shows, including Poldark, and there is a small museum there that is open seasonally. The historic fishing ports of Mevagissey and Fowey are easily accessible from St Austell.

ST AUSTELL Cornwall - Town Walking Tour, Charlestown Harbour and Best Beaches - 4K Video

Beginning with a brief walking tour of St Austell town we head off to check out the best of what the local area has to offer.

Whilst St Austell is good for basic shopping there isn't a great deal to see in the town itself. However, the immediate area is pretty stunning and it isn't difficult to see why it is often referred to as the Cornish Riviera. Head to the coast and you won't be disappointed.

Our first stop out of St Austell is the picture postcard Georgian harbour village of Charlestown. Probably the most popular film location in Cornwall the harbour has been used in productions such as Poldark, Alice in Wonderland and any number of Treasure Island spin offs.

The village is also home to a fairly presentable beach, and whilst Charlestown beach might not have the finest sand it has some great rock pools and lots to explore.

For the best beaches you need only head less than a mile either side of Charlestown. Perhaps the top spot goes to Porthpean beach with it's calm clear waters and wooded backdrop. Sitting just next door is Duporth beach which has the feel of a less perfect version of Porthpean. On the plus side it is a little harder to get to, and with no facilities it is often quieter.

A little further along the beach is St Austell's biggest beach, Carlyon Bay. Stretching for nearly a mile the sand here is a little on the coarse side but with plenty of space, food options and super-sized rockpool this is a great family beach.

Carlyon Bay, Cornwall - St Austell's biggest beach in 4K

Carlyon Bay is located just outside of St Austell and stretches on for the best part of a mile. Easy to get to and with plenty of room this is a popular family beach.

In this video we explore the beach by land and by air. Starting at the Crinnis beach end with it's oversized rock pool and the towering Crinnis Island we make our way along the sand (or stent technically) towards Polgaver, traditionally a nudist beach. Not sure any naturism goes down here these days - no sign of it on this day.

Ten of the Best Family Activities in Cornwall

- From surfing to wildlife spotting to ziplining and more, there are lots of family-friendly activities in Cornwall.

1 Boat Trips

Perfect for all ages, this wonderful activity gives you the chance to see the Cornish coastline like never before.

2 The Camel Trail

A former railway line, the Camel Trail runs for 18 miles. And, best of all, it’s almost entirely traffic-free, too.

3 SUP Tours

A family-friendly activity in Cornwall that’s becoming more and more popular is stand up paddleboarding.

4 Go Karting

Cornwall’s largest go-karting circuit located between Padstow and Newquay, it’s a great thing to do with kids in Cornwall.

5 Zip Wire

Offering the chance to soar on England’s longest and fastest zipwire, this one will create plenty of stories for your kids to proudly share with their friends.

6 Surfing

From beginners to salt-weathered pros, everyone can get involved and enjoy expert tuition – so there’s no excuse for mums and dads not to get in as well!

7 Coastal Walking

For family days out in Cornwall that allow you to go at your own pace, the South West Coast Path is an attractive proposition.

8 Aqua Park

Suitable for everyone aged 6 and over, Retallack Aqua Park is Cornwall’s biggest ‘total wipe-out’-style adventure park.

9 Crazy Golf

Not everyone wants to take part in high-energy adventures, which is why activities like mini golf are great for all generations.

10 Waterskiing

Allowing you to skim across the water’s surface on two skis or a ‘mono’ ski, water-skiing is something that everyone can try.
