S1 – Ep 230 – Springbok – The Largest Town in the Namaqualand of the Northern Cape!

The road from Komaggas to Springbok might have been a tarred road, but it was stunning all the same. The Spektakel Pass was made so much more of a spectacle because of the story behind its name. When we arrived in the bustling Northern Cape town of Springbok, we could immediately see why it is the largest town in Namaqualand. We knew straightaway that we would not be able to cover even a small percentage of the town with the limited time to our disposal, so we just took a drive through and saw what we could. Then it was off to our accommodation about 10km outside of Springbok, where we had a fantastic time with a view to die for. What a beautiful place to recharge. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #springbok #namaqualand #northerncape #komaggas #spektakelpass

10 Amazing Places to Visit in South Africa

10 Amazing Places to Visit in South Africa

Kruger National Park: One of South Africa’s most famous and accessible game reserves, the Kruger National Park is a wildlife lover’s dream. Located in the north-east of the country, The Kruger National Park covers an enormous stretch of ecosystems that support all kinds of wildlife – from grasslands and dense forests to thickets and dry riverbeds.

Cape Town: The Mother City, with its gorgeous beaches, majestic mountain views, and friendly people, is a highlight on any South African bucket list. It may only be the second-largest city in the country, but it’s easily one of the most recognizable cities in the world. Located on the southwest tip of South Africa’s Western Cape Province, Cape Town enjoys a mild, Mediterranean climate and a spectacular natural setting.

Cape Winelands: If you’re a wine connoisseur, you’ll be in your element in South Africa’s extraordinary Cape Winelands. Located just a 45-minute drive from Cape Town, it’s one of the most picturesque wine-producing regions in the world, with undulating vineyards and spectacular mountain views from just about anywhere.

Hermanus: The once-sleepy, now touristy town of Hermanus in the Western Cape is the whale watching capital of South Africa – and for good reason.

Blyde River Canyon: Tangled in subtropical foliage, the Blyde River Canyon is the largest green canyon on the planet, and one of the deepest natural canyons on Earth.

Durban: While often overshadowed by bigger sisters Cape Town and Joburg, the port city of Durban (South Africa’s busiest) has plenty to offer all of its own – particularly if you are visiting during the southern hemisphere winter. With average temperatures in the mid-20s from June to July, winter simply doesn’t exist here!

Addo Elephant National Park: With humble beginnings as a small elephant sanctuary established to protect just 11 reddish-colored Addo elephants in the 1930s, Addo Elephant National Park is now one of South Africa’s largest national parks – and possibly one of the best for spotting these gentle giants.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Reaching out into both South Africa and neighboring Botswana, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (meaning ‘Great Thirst’) is a desert wilderness with terrain that’s totally unique. Amidst the salt pans, bushveld, and rust-red dunes of the Kalahari are hordes of plains game, such as wildebeest, springbok (South Africa’s national animal), and gemsbok that are hunted in turn by predators like lions, cheetah, and leopards.

Drakensberg: The Drakensberg is a mountain range in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province. Often shortened to just ‘The Berg’ by locals, the Drakensberg means ‘Mountains of the Dragon.’ The meaning of such a dramatic name isn’t lost on you when you see the might and majesty of these mountains.

Garden Route: One of the most beautiful drives in the world, the Garden Route meanders past seaside villages, game reserves, forests, lagoons, and white sandy beaches, with the brilliant blues of the Indian Ocean right alongside you. Stretching from Mossel Bay to St. Francis, this tourist route is what lures most international visitors to South Africa.

South Africa Today on 10 February 2024

Today's daily update video from South Africa is on 10 February 2024. In this video, we start today's video driving in heavy rain on the N1 past the Engen Kroonvaal One Stop in the Free State Province of South Africa. Then, an extensive lighting storm in Vryheid, rain approaching Durban as seen from the pier. Beautiful sunset in Blue Horizon Bay. We then show stormy seas at Eersterivierstrand. We also show the feeding of a bush baby at the Elephant Sanctuary near Hartbeespoort Dam. Then, Manneberg was in Cape Town, and we visited several more places across South Africa.

Weather forecast across South Africa today:
There is a forecast for severe thunderstorms in the central and western parts of Limpopo Province, as well as over the escarpment and northern Highveld of Mpumalanga Province. These storms may bring heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, hail, excessive lightning, and the potential for localised flooding, structural damage, and blocked roads due to falling trees. There is a significant risk of fires in the northwestern parts of the Northern Cape Province.

If you enjoyed this video, please watch my other videos as well at the following link:

Music from today is from the YouTube Audio library:

Drive over the Hartbeespoort Dam Wall. Cheetahs are seen in the distance looking at two resting springbok in the Kgalgadi Transfrontier Park. We show Heidelberg and stand on the banks of the Breede River at Witsand. We end today's video next to the Benoni Lake at Homestead, where the weekend park run occurred.

Springbok - Driving in Namaqualands biggest town - Northern Cape, South Africa

Following on from Poffader I arrived in Springbok. It is the biggest town in the Namaqualand region of South Africa. The town is very beautiful with amazing rocky landscapes. I had a good time in the town, got to enjoy some beers with the locals. The town has a population of about 13 000 people from what I read online. The town has long history of mining, copper mining was once very important in the area. An interesting side note, when I was there a guy tried to sell me diamonds, he literally had the diamonds in his mouth, I wasn't sure whether the diamonds where real or not but I decided not to buy anything from him lol.

10. Tankwa Karoo National Park
The vast expanse of the Tankwa Karoo National Park is enough to woo even the hardiest of hearts and, when spring rolls around, this stark and barren national park is transformed into one of the most beautiful places on earth. Only a four hour drive from the Mother City, Tankwa covers an area of about 30, 000 hectares, most of which is cloaked under a white and yellow veil come springtime. The best views of this artist’s palette of colour are towards the Roggeveld Escarpment, which gives you incredible views of the surrounding plateau and is a carpet of red, pink, deep orange and purple petals.

A Road Trip | NAMAQUALAND, NORTHERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA

A road trip in the Mountains of Namaqualand, Northern Cape, South Africa from small town Garies to Springbok via Studer's Pass during spring flower season.

Namaqualand - Namaqualand is a harsh, relentless, arid wilderness. Surface water is practically non-existent and subterranean water is brackish and hard to find. And here in this desert, one of the most remarkable wonders of nature occurs. In the spring, from mid-July to the end of September the spring flowers give the world its most beautiful botanical spectacle.

Studer's Pass is a serious altitude gaining gravel pass located between Garies and the small settlements of Leliesfontein and Paulshoek in Namaqualand. The pass is the gateway to some of the finest wild-flower displays and forms part of a circular route incorporating the best of Namaqualand. It is a pure and backward part of South Africa, mainly untouched by the heavy hand of progress.
