Road trip to Belgian city Spa, a pleasure to drive in the community of Liège, Belgium!
Spa is a Belgian town located in Liège Province, and the town where the term spa originates. The town of Spa is situated in a valley in the Ardennes mountains 35 kilometres (22 miles) southeast of the city of Liège and 45 kilometres (28 miles) southwest of Aachen. In 2006, Spa had a population of 10,543 and an area of 39.85 square kilometres (15.39 square miles), giving a population density of 265 inhabitants per km²
Spa is one of Belgium's most popular tourist destinations, being renowned for its natural mineral springs, and production of Spa mineral water, which is exported worldwide. The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, just south of the nearby village of Francorchamps, also hosts the annual Belgian Grand Prix.
The world's first beauty pageant, the Concours de Beauté, was held in Spa on 19 September 1888. It hosted the Tour de France on 5 July 2010, when stage 2 of the race ended in the town.

The term “Spa” has originated from the Spa Town in the Liege province of Belgium. The town is located in a forested valley where Ardennes mountains meet the Hautes Fagnes Plauteau. Spa town has become very famous because of its natural mineral water springs. The town is also famous because of the production of mineral water with the same brand name “Spa”, which is exported worldwide. Spa has always been praised for its healing environment.
Besides the natural springs, the town is also famous for hosting the annual Belgium Grand Prix at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. Spa has also hosted some famous events like Tour de France in 2010 and the world’s first beauty pageant in 1888.
The beautiful town is surrounded with rivers, mountains and natural springs. The beauty and the fame of waters have attracted a lot of people throughout the centuries. The visitors who came to take the waters at Spa also include Charles II of England and Peter the Great. The importance of the Spa was so well established that the “Spa” became the English term for hydrotherapy.
History of Spa Belgium
The water in the Spa town has been believed to have natural healing properties and hence the town is seeing visitors looking for hydrotherapy since the 14th Century. It was also believed that drinking water from the Spa town will cure fevers, treat infections and cleanse the body. Gilbert Lymborh also wrote about the qualities of the “Acid Fountains of the Ardennes forest” as he called them by this name.
King of England’s physician visited Spa in 1547 and got highly impressed. He went back and praised the place a lot. The news spread and the high class started to visit the town. The visit by Charles II of England made the place very famous in 1654. Casinos were established in the town during the 18th century. The Spa town also acted as the general headquarters of the German Army in 1918. During this time, Spa was also an important place as it was the hospital town for the German Army.
Spa was again re-captured by Germans in the World War II and luckily “Battle of the Bulge”, which almost reached to the gates of the town, ended in 1945 before it could affect the town. From 1950 to 1960 the town had already became very famous as a recreational and tourist spot which started to attract a large number of tourists. Due to large number of visitors, the town went into an infrastructural renewal from 1980 to 1990. A new French song festival started in Spa in 1994 which became very famous in the region. It attracted 150,000 spectators in the year 2007. In 2007, the Spa town upgraded its Formula-One circuit which now hosts the Grand Prix every year.
