Pitalkhora Caves, Aurangabad, Maharashtra | पित्तळखोर लेणी, औरंगाबाद, महाराष्ट्र

The Pitalkhora Caves, in the Satamala range of the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, India, are an ancient Buddhist site consisting of 14 rock-cut cave monuments which date back to the third century BCE, making them one of the earliest examples of rock-cut architecture in India. Located about 40 kilometres from Ellora, the site is reached by a steep climb down a flight of concrete stairs, past a waterfall next to the caves.

The caves are cut in a variety of basalt rock, but some of the caves have crumbled and are damaged. Out of the 14, four are chaityas (one housing votive stupas, one apsidal and single-cell) and the rest are viharas. All the caves belong to the Hinayana period, but the reasonably well-preserved paintings are of the Mahayana period. The caves are in two groups, one of 10 caves and the second of four. It is believed that Pitalkhora can be identified with Ptolemy’s Petrigala as well as the Pitangalya of Mahamayuri, a Buddhist chronicle. The inscriptions date from c. 250 BCE to the 3rd and 4th centuries CE.

The site shows statues of elephants, two soldiers of which one is intact, a damaged Gaja Lakshmi icon, and an ancient rainwater harvesting system. These caves have been significant in helping establish the chronology of cave building in the Ajanta-Ellora region.

The Chaitya hall, Cave 3 of Pitalkhora, represents an important marker in the chronology of the Chaitya hall design in western India. It is thought that the chronology of these early Chaitya Caves is as follows: first, in the 1st century BCE, Cave 9 at Kondivite Caves and then Cave 12 at the Bhaja Caves, which both predate Cave 10 of Ajanta. Then, after Cave 10 of Ajanta, in chronological order: Cave 3 at Pitalkhora, Cave 1 at Kondana Caves, Cave 9 at Ajanta, which, with its more ornate designs, may have been built about a century later, Cave 18 at Nasik Caves, and Cave 7 at Bedse Caves, to finally culminate with the final perfection of the Great Chaitya at Karla Caves.

20 kms away from Kannad (Dist. Aurangabad) 30 kms away from Chalisgaon. (Central Railway, Chandikawadi, Maharashtra 431103

Vetalwadi fort or Vasai fort (not to be confused with Vasai fort in Thane district) is situated in Aurangabad district near Soygaon taluka. Its solid and huge fortification, bastions and buildings are still in a good condition, which easily grab trekkers’ attention and gives a feel of a complete fort.

This hill fort is located within Ajanta-satmala range. It is located about 6 kilometers away from Taluka head-quarters Soygaon. At base village Vetalwadi formed name of this Fort. In the North side beautiful waterfall located Ganesh and Shiva temple place Rudreshwar Cave is about 3 kilometers away from this fort. Easy muddy path proceeds from village Vetalwadi to the 120 meters high hill located place. Lot of water tanks carved on this fort and big Lake is also on the top.

History:
There is no information about this fort in history. There is a reference in old documents that Vetalwadi Fort is also called as “Betulwadi”. Because people of the village of Vetalwadi do not like the word “Vetal”, they call this fort as the fort of Wadi.

Places to Visit on Fort:
From Undangaon diversion on Sillod – Jalgaon road, the Halada Ghat directly takes us to the entrance of the Vetalwadi fort. This entrance welcomes us with the two huge bastions with another huge bastion behind it, which are constructed to attack the enemy entering. It also has decorative balustrade. The paved route between these two bastions turns in right angle and goes to the north facing entrance door. This door is said to be also called as Janjala Darwaja as it faces the Janjala fort. The bastion’s height is around 20 ft and it has two Sharabh sculptures on it. There are also has porches for guards. There is a staircase which routes to the square shaped opening on the roof of main door. The stairs from this opening take us to another chamber. From this top point, we can see the fort walls, Halada Ghat & the Vetalwadi Dam below. On the upper side we can see the fortification of the citadel.

Down the entrance door, on the right side is a dry cistern with pillars. The trail to the right from entrance takes to another big bastion, which is a host for bats today. After walking some distance we reach to the east facing bastion. Further 5 minute walk takes us to the citadel of the fort. Near this bastion of the citadel, there is a small dome shaped building which has small opening in the roof through which we can reach the middle bastion. There is a cistern near this bastion called “Tel-Tupache Taake” literally meaning the cistern for oil / ghee. Besides this oil tank we can see a granary, in front of which there are remains of a building. Ahead there is a mosque named “Namajgir”, on the walls of which we can see the carved signature of Nizam and a cross below it. In front of Namajgir there is a pond and to the right is a tomb.

To the northern point of the fort there is a building named “Bardari” which has two distinct arches. On the way to Bardari, there are some remnants. In Bardari we can find two rows of arches. It is said to be built for the royal family to spend leisure time. There is a similar mansion on the Deogiri fort too. Below the Bardari we can see the main entrance and Vetalwadi village.

We can reach the main entrance or the north facing entrance by a trail from Bardari. On the way, we can see a canon of about 6’10” in length. There is a secret door in the fortification. This entrance is guarded by two bastions and one of its doors faces north. Height of the door frame is about 20 feet and there are two Sharabhs carved on two sides. There are porches for the guards inside and the second door faces west. From this, it takes almost 20 mins to reach to the Vetalwadi village.

Ghatotkach Buddhist Caves | घटोत्कच लेणी | Aurangabad Caves | Offbeat Destinations in India

This video is second episode of the 6 days adventure trip to offbeat destinations of the hill range called Ajanta Range. We have actually planned to visit 7 forts, 2 sanctuaries and 2 waterfalls which are completely offbeat. Most of you never even heard of the names of these places. All this is an effort to bring to you unseen offbeat places which is our mission of our Journey Deals channel.

We have planned everything in details. However we are completely aware that the plan may be needed to modify suddenly anytime because of covid restrictions into few villages or bad weather conditions or time availability or any other uncontrollable reason.

Today (Day 2) we planned to visit Ghatotkach Caves and Janjala Fort. Both are nearby to each other. Today’s video cover Ghatotkach Caves.

Ghatotkach Caves are Buddha Caves near Janjala village in Aurangabad district and Sillod taluka. This cave is located at a distance of 18 km west of Ajanta. The caves have three Buddhist caves, one is a chaitya and two are viharas. The caves were excavated in the 6th century and were influenced by Mahayana Buddhism. There is an inscription on the minister of the Wakatak dynasty of the cave. The inscription is about Buddha, Dhamma and Sangh.

There are Buddhist caves in the middle of Janjala village and Janjala fort. The facade of this cave is spacious and has 20 pillars. The shape and design of the two pillars in the middle and in the corner are different from the others. On the left side of the hall is a Buddha statue and an inscription. It mentions Ashmak's Princess. Varahdev, the minister of Wakataka king, has also given information that these caves were excavated in the 5th century AD. There is a seated idol of Gautam Buddha in the temple. There is Dhamma Chakra under the seat and in the middle.

Ghatotkach is a modern name given to the monument. The ancient name of the site is not known. The place is connected to the nearby village of Janjala. It is about 50 km from Ajanta by car. However, in ancient times, it was 1 km from Ajanta. The distance was gone on foot.

In the surrounding scenic areas, especially during the rainy season, this waterfall is close by. There are two rock-cut buildings. There is a big temple. The other is a small building. The place was developed by Varahadeva, the Prime Minister of Wakataka King Harishna. The main cave, the large temple, was being developed at the same time as the later stages of Ajanta.

The outline of the temple is very similar to that of the Ajanta Caves. Its development is mainly related to the development of many Ajanta Caves, especially Ajanta Caves 16. There is a front-court here. Recently, separate chapels for Nagendra and Yaksha-deities have been unveiled. On either side of the porch are pavilions with inner cells. The hall of the temple has three doors. The hall has an impressive colony of many pillars. At the end of the hall is the temple in the center of the temple.

The sanctum sanctorum depicts the main sculpture. This shows that Bodhisattvas flanked Sakimmuni. To the right of the front fort, there is a katia / stupa, which is comfortably carved. The doors are also filled with many decorative figures.

Shaptashrungi hill is located at about 60 kms away from Nashik City in Maharastra State of India. Saptashrungi is a hill range consisting of seven hills locally called Ghads and form part of the Sahyadri Range of hills in Western Ghats. Sahyadri Range is also known as Ajanta Satmala Range and the average height of the peaks is 4,500 feet (1,400 m). The Dhodap, in the center of this mountain range, is the highest peak with an elevation of 4,600 feet (1,400 m), and Saptashrungi is towards its west.[2][3][4] There are 108 water bodies (ponds) located in the watershed of these hills, which are called Kundas. Nanduri, Kalwan and Vani are the villages nearest to the temple, which are situated at the foot of the hills. There are many approaches to reach the top of the temple location. The route from Nashik and Vani via Dindori is 39 kilometres (24 mi) and via Pimpalgaon Baswant is 51 kilometres (32 mi). The route via Nadurgaon village is the easiest and is 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) from Vani. It is at a distance of 60 kilometres (37 mi) from Nashik, the district headquarters. The State Highway 17 (Maharashtra) (SH-17) connected with the National Highway 3 (NH 3) links Nashik with the temple site near the villages of Vani and Nanduri.
