Kyffhäuser Monument - February 17, 1991
Pete and I took an early morning train from Berlin to Erfurt, and then to Sondershausen, where we found a taxi driver to take us to the Kyffäuser Monument, then to Barbarossa's Cave, and back to Sondershausen again. Recorded on February 17, 1991.
Eisenach, Germany, Wartburg Castle, and Die Drachenschlucht Trail
Work trip to Germany. Spent a weekend day walking and hiking through Eisenach, Germany. Eisenach was the home of JS Bach and Martin Luther. After walking through the city I hiked to Wartburg Castle. From there I continued on to the Drachenschlucht trail which winds through a beautiful slot canyon.
Kyffhäuserdenkmal (Part 1 of 2)
This 15-minute German documentary was filmed on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Kyffhäuserdenkmal, or Kyffhäuser Monument (1896). The monument commemorates Kaiser Wilhelm I and the founding of the Second German Reich (or empire).
Part 1 gives some background on the monument's location, which was the site of one of the castles of Kaiser Friedrich I of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, or Barbarossa. It also describes the building of the monument. Part 2 gives an in-depth look at the sections of the monument, and the history of the Kyffhäuserdenkmal after its construction.
Schlosshotel Burg Schlitz (Mecklenburg, Germany)
Family-owned manor house dating to the early 19th century amid 400 acres of parkland, pasture and forest 120 miles north of Berlin. Atmospheric common areas comprise a semicircular Pompeiian-style lounge, a library, a bar, a cigar lounge and the formal Wappen-Saal restaurant for French-inspired cuisine. Twenty guest rooms feature custom silk-upholstered furniture, Biedermeier antiques, original artwork, wood parquet floors and embroidered bed covers. The grandest lodging is the 1,075-square-foot Grafen-Räume suite, with a study, main salon, vestibule, walk-in closet and white-tiled bath. Small spa with gym, indoor pool and sundeck. Outdoor activities include horseback riding, hunting, hiking, biking and fishing, plus nearby golf and tennis.

Eine letzte Wanderung im Jahr 2021, führte uns am Silvestermorgen (diesmal trockenen Fußes) vorbei an der ehemaligen Zellerfelder Sprungschanze, oberhalb der Biathlonstrecke zum Ottiliaeschacht, weiter durch wunderschönen Wald und an Kunstgräben entlang.
