I was on a recent trip to magnificent Germany a few weeks ago and I had an opportunity to stop by Giessen, Germany where I had lived for four years as a kid.
My time in Giessen on this trip was very short but I am very grateful for my time spent in the early evening and early morning in Giessen.

Entlang der Lahn - Zwischen Natur und Tradition | WDR Reisen
Eine Tour entlang der Lahn ohne Auto - kein Problem für Stefan Pinnow: Er wandert, radelt und paddelt, er nimmt den Zug, den Dampfer und das Segelflugzeug, er fährt mit dem Pferdeomnibus, einer Grubenbahn und sogar mit einem „schwimmenden Donut“.

Day Trip to New Braunfels ???? (FULL EPISODE) S7 E10
Many know this town for the slip and slides of Schlitterbahn, but that’s just one slice of this German town. A passion for the past mixed with many new adventures await you in a town that will make your day trip truly das beste. (P.S. - It's pronounced New BRAUN-FULS)
One can’t mention New Braunfels without mentioning the famous Comal River. At 2 miles long, it’s the shortest river in Texas and perfect for an afternoon float. The most popular place to start your float is Prince Solms Park. Grab your tube, your beverage of choice, and hop in. While most of this river is slow moving, the city tube shoot near the beginning will give you all the whitewater you can handle and has been known to flip many a floater. You might want to hold onto your stuff, or else be prepared to make an involuntary donation to the river depths.
For a more adrenaline-pumping experience, head to the Texas Ski Ranch, where you can learn to wakeboard without a boat. Just grab a board and hold on tight as a cable-system pulls you around a circular lake. My advice for first timers: watch out for the turns, and be prepared to spend more time under the water than on top of it!
To start your day, visit Naegelin’s Bakery, the oldest bakery in Texas dating back to 1868. The fresh baked goods are made with age-old German recipes. The apple strudel is amazing and the old-fashioned German cookies like “spingerles” and “Pfeffernusses” will have you thinking you’re back in the motherland.
If you’re looking to add a little spice to your day, then stop by the Phoenix Saloon, a chili parlor housed in the building where chili powder was invented in 1894. They serve it the Texan way (read: the right way), as every bowl of chili is served bean-free with chunks of sirloin and lots of spice. Be warned, the “ring of fire” bowl requires a waiver. They’ve also got burgers and sandwiches for all those who don’t like chili (if that’s even possible…)
The best way to learn about the German roots of New Braunfels and Prince Carl, the German Prince who settled the area, is to visit the Sophienburg Museum. Here, you’ll see tons of German artifacts like a life-size model of the ship that families took to arrive in Texas.
Another place that is historic in its own right, and one of America’s most iconic roadside attractions, is Snake Farm (cue the Ray Wiley Hubbard). This zoo sits right on the highway and has been curing snake fears since 1967. They’ve got a wide range of the world’s creepiest snakes from Black Mambas to Rattlers and Cobras. If snakes aren’t your thing, step outside to an incredible zoo with lions, hyenas, and more. Don’t miss the weekly gator feedings. CHOMP!

GERMANY historic center of Herborn (Hessen)
Herborn is situated north of Frankfurt. There are beautiful half-timbered houses in the old center of the town. We stayed in Herborn for a couple of days and visited from there several towns in the neighbourhood. (Original sound, no added music).

Wetzlar, GERMANY ???????? 2021 | Walking tour | 4K/60fps
Wetzlar is a city in the state of Hesse, Germany. A former free imperial city, it gained much of its fame as the seat of the Imperial Supreme Court (Reichskammergericht) of the Holy Roman Empire. Located 51 kilometers north of Frankfurt, Wetzlar straddles the river Lahn and is on the German Timber-Frame Road, which passes mile upon mile of half-timbered houses. Historically, the city has acted as the hub of the Lahn-Dill-Kreis on the north edge of the Taunus. Tourists know the city for its ancient town and its medieval Catholic/Protestant shared cathedral of St. Mary.
Notable architectural features include the Eisenmarkt and the steep gradients and tightly-packed street layout of a medieval town. The building of the sandstone cathedral commenced in the 12th century in Romanesque style. In the later Middle Ages the construction continued under a master plan in Gothic style. The church was never finished—one steeple still remains uncompleted. The cathedral suffered heavy damage in the Second World War from aerial bombing, but restoration took place in the 1950s. On the outskirts of town along the river stand the ruins of several stone towers.

Die Burg Hermannstein bei Wetzlar (1) / Hermannstein Castle part I
1376 nutzte Graf Johann IV. von Solms-Burgsolms die Unruhen innerhalb Wetzlars, um sich der Stadt zu bemächtigten. Kaiser Karl IV. hatte ihn beauftragt, den alten Rat wieder einzusetzen, was der Graf ausnutzte, um die Stadtherrschaft selbst zu übernehmen. Als Gegenmaßnahme entschloss sich Landgraf Hermann II. zum Bau einer Burg vor den Toren Wetzlars auf solmsischem Terrain. Der Baubeginn der Burg steht nicht genau fest. 1377 war der Burgbau noch nicht vollendet, könnte aber in vollem Gange gewesen sein. Nach Eintragungen des hessischen Rentmeisters wurden im Juli 1377 Kalk und Steine nach Hermannstein geliefert.
Nachdem 1379 ein Friedensvertrag zwischen Graf Johann IV. und Landgraf Hermann II. geschlossen wurde, fiel das ehemals solmsische Gebiet, auf dem der Hermannstein errichtet worden war, an Hessen. Den Solmsern wurde jedoch die Möglichkeit eingeräumt, gemeinsam mit Hessen unterhalb der Burg ein Dorf zu errichten, das je zur Hälfte Hessen und Solms gehören sollte. Von dieser Möglichkeit machten die Grafen von Solms aber wahrscheinlich keinen Gebrauch.
Der Landgraf ließ den Hermannstein zunächst von Burgmannen verwalten. Später benutzte er ihn in finanziellen Notzeiten auch als Pfandobjekt. Der erste Burgmann war 1378 Dietrich von Buchenau. Wahrscheinlich beaufsichtigte er auch die Fertigstellung der Burg. 1381 folgte Kuno von Rodenhausen, 1386 Gumpracht von Hohenfels. Danach wurde die Burg an Gottfried von Girmes und Gernand Rau von Holzhausen verpfändet. Sie erhielten Burg, Ort und Zubehör.
1437, als Henne Wais von Fauerbach im Pfandbesitz der Burg war, wurde ein Anschlag auf den Hermannstein verübt und Feuer gelegt. Henne beschuldigte den Grafen Bernhard von Solms-Braunfels, der Anstifter dieses Anschlags gewesen zu sein, konnte dies aber nicht beweisen. 1438 bat Henne den Landgrafen Ludwig I., die Burg dem Volgerecht von Schwalbach als Lehen zu geben.
1444 war Johann von Schwalbach Herr auf Hermannstein, 1448 verwaltete Simon Schütz als Amtmann die Burg.
1455 übernahm Daniel von Mudersbach für 200 Gulden die Burg als Pfand. 1466 verpfändete Landgraf Heinrich III. die Burg für 200 rheinische Gulden in einem Schuldbrief und 700 Gulden in bar an Daniels Sohn, den Amtmann Ludwig von Mudersbach und dessen Frau Liese.
1481 erwarb Johann Schenk zu Schweinsberg die baufällige Burg mit allem Zubehör, mit Einwilligung des Landgrafen Heinrich III., für 900 Gulden von Mudersbachs Witwe und erhielt sie dann von Heinrich III. für weitere 4000 Gulden als ein an den Landgrafen heimfallendes Lehen.[2] Johann und seine Gemahlin Margaretha von Schlitz gen. von Görtz residierten seitdem auf Burg Hermannstein, die in einem sehr schlechten Zustand war. 1486 bekundete Landgraf Wilhelm III., dass der Hermannstein „gantz verganglich und baufällig gewesen ist“. Gleichzeitig erkannte er auch die hohen Kosten an, die dem Marschall zur Wiederherstellung der Burg entstanden waren. Johann Schenck hatte zunächst 1200 Gulden verbaut, als ihm 1486 gestattet wurde, weitere 800 Gulden zu investieren. Einen Teil des Geldes verwandte er zur Errichtung der Unterburg.
Graf Otto von Solms-Braunfels, der unter anderem mit der Hälfte von Hermannstein belehnt war, legte gegen die Schenckische Besitzergreifung Beschwerde ein und versuchte den gesamten Hermannstein an sich zu bringen. Der Streit wurde 1489 durch Vermittlung des Kurfürsten Philipp von der Pfalz beigelegt. Otto von Solms-Braunfels wurde der Anspruch auf eine Hälfte der Burg Hermannstein insoweit anerkannt und bereinigt, dass er diese Hälfte vom Landgrafen zu Lehen nahm und sie sofort an Johann Schenk zu Schweinsberg als Afterlehen weitergab.
Die Nachfahren von Johann und Margaretha bezeichneten sich später als Hermannsteiner Linie der Schenck zu Schweinsberg. (Diese Linie schrieb ihren Namen meist nur mit „k“, nicht mit „ck“.)
Wann die Freiherren von der Burg in den angrenzenden Gutshof umsiedelten, ist nicht bekannt. Ein Kupferstich aus dem Jahre 1631 von Daniel Meisner zeigt die Burg noch wohlerhalten. 1691 wurden Baron von Curtin und Anna Helena von Schenck in der Burg verheiratet. 1717 heißt es: ... in dem Hochadl. Hauß Ehelich eingesegnet und getraut worden, was sich bereits auf den Gutshof beziehen könnte. 1787 schrieb Pfarrer Görtz: Schade, daß diesen Turm, der zum ewigen Andenken seiner Erbauer erhalten zu werden diente, nicht Zeit und Alter, sondern verwüstende Hände zum Theil zerstören. Manches Mauerwerk in Hermannstein wird im Laufe der Jahrhunderte aus den Steinen der Burg errichtet worden sein. So verfiel die Burg und wurde zur Ruine.
1961 wurde die Burg an die Buderus AG verkauft. 1965 wurde sie Privatbesitz, renoviert und bis 2009 bewohnt. 2010 kaufte das niederländische Ehepaar Emile und Heidy van Duren die Burg. Ab Februar 2012 bewohnten und restaurierten dessen Mitarbeiter die Burg teilweise. 2019 kauften das amerikanische Ehepaar Leonhard und Beatriz LeComte die Burg Hermannstein.

Puppenstubenmuseum Laubach - Richtfest Sept. 2010
Richtfest für das Puppenstubenmuseum in Laubach, das in einer ehemaligen Fachwerkscheune seit Sep. 2011 die Puppenstubensammlung von Prinzessin Monika von Hannover geb. Gräfin zu Solms-Laubach beherbergt. Herwig Krüger vom Vorstand der »Prinzessin Monika von Hannover Stiftung« Stiftung sprach bei der Begrüßung von einem »ersten großen Meilenstein«. Die Stiftung war im April 2009 gegründet worden, um die einzigartige Sammlung zu erhalten und der Öffentlichkeit zu präsentieren.

Fredericksburg (German: Friedrichsburg) is the seat of Gillespie County, in the U.S. state of Texas.[3] As of the 2010 Census, the city had a population of 10,530.[4]
Fredericksburg was founded in 1846 and named after Prince Frederick of Prussia. Old-time German residents often referred to Fredericksburg as Fritztown, a nickname that is still used in some businesses.[5] The town is also notable as the home of Texas German, a dialect spoken by the first generations of German settlers who initially refused to learn English. Fredericksburg shares many cultural characteristics with New Braunfels, which had been established by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels the previous year. Fredericksburg is the birthplace of Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz. It is the sister city of Montabaur, Germany.[6] On October 14, 1970, the Fredericksburg Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in Texas.[7]
