10 Best Places to Visit in Sri Lanka - Travel Video

Check out all the places seen in this video:

Sri Lanka may be a small island in the Indian Ocean but that’s the only thing small about it. The country, formerly known as Ceylon, boasts an ancient civilization, golden sandy beaches with their swaying coconut palms, mountains, and tea plantations. While visiting the island, you’ll see colonial architecture from the days when the Portuguese, Dutch and English ruled. You’ll also see lots of elephants, some of which participate in local festivals and, if you’re lucky, perhaps a leopard or two at a wildlife sanctuary. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Sri Lanka:

The Dark Sides of Living in Britain

What are the dark sides of living in Britain? If you’re contemplating moving to the UK to escape poverty, for education, for career advancement, or to raise a family, think twice before you hop on the train. There are negative sides of Britain that you need to consider closely. When people arrive in Britain in search of a greener pasture, they’re rudely shocked by those dark sides of living in Britain and also to discover that there are worst places to live in Britain. Today, I’m going to show you some of them. They’re actually among the reasons why foreigners who intend to live in Britain don’t stay.
I need to quickly tell you this: The listing here represents just my personal opinion about living in the United Kingdom and some might consider it a plus and not a minus.

LAXTON: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #10 of 172

Occasionally you'll find you come to a village that has almost no human activity going on whatsoever and you’ll wonder if you’ve accidentally stepped into an alternate reality. It becomes even more weird when you pass the village pub and there’s a banner that says on the outside – “The Saltmarshians Have Landed!” You start to doubt whether or not you’re on planet Earth any longer!

Well, the truth is that if you came to today’s parish you would still be very much within the East Riding of Yorkshire and even though I’ve made this village sound weird in that opening paragraph, this is a place I would seriously love to live in! There’s a multitude of reasons why, not least of which is the proximity this village has to the River Ouse and the lovely view you get from the riverbank on a sunny day.

I realise that might not be to everyone’s liking, but it would be fabulous to take advantage of the benches that run along the bank at Saltmarshe, one of the hamlets that fall within the parish boundaries. You’re also not short of amenities too. Whilst the village here has no shop, you can catch a bus to Howden, or even a train from Saltmarshe station to solve that problem. There is a pub though – The Bricklayers Arms.

The church here is very pretty, dating from 1625 after three sisters paid for its construction following King Henry VIII’s seizure of land that belonged to the original chapel. In fact, the village is just generally pretty, so quiet, so relaxed, and altogether very appealing.

It might be named after a species of fish, but there’s nothing fishy about this one. This one ranks highly on TVI’s all time favourites list. This is LAXTON.

Places to see in ( Yorkshire - UK ) Newby Hall and Gardens

Places to see in ( Yorkshire - UK ) Newby Hall and Gardens

Newby Hall is an 18th-century country house situated beside the River Ure at Skelton-on-Ure, near Boroughbridge in North Yorkshire, England. It is a Grade I listed building and contains a collection of furniture, painting and precious artefacts. The south side of the grounds, by the river, has extensive herbaceous borders and woodland walks. Also Grade I listed are the Georgian stable block, leased as offices, and the Church of Christ the Consoler. Newby Hall is open to the public from 21 March until 1 October.

The manor of Newby was sold by the Crosland family in the 1690s, after the death of Sir John Crosland in 1670, to Sir Edward Blackett, MP for Ripon. He demolished the existing manor house and in 1697 built a spacious mansion designed with the assistance of Sir Christopher Wren. He was succeeded in 1718 by his son, Edward, and he in turn by his nephew Edward. The latter sold the estate in 1748 to Richard Elcock (later Richard Elcock Weddell) and it passed from him to his young son William Weddell in 1762.

During the Second World War, Newby was one of several country retreats selected to house the Royal Family, if they had needed to be evacuated from the capital. The present owners, the Compton family, are indirect descendants of William Weddell. They have restored the property. The gardens, which have extensive herbaceous borders and woodland walks, were developed in their present form by Major Edward Compton, who took over Newby in 1921. His son Robert Edward John (Robin) Compton, born in 1922, was chairman of Time-Life International for many years. He took over the running of Newby Hall in 1960. He was appointed High Sheriff of North Yorkshire in 1978 and Deputy Lieutenant from 1981. The house then passed down to Richard Clephane Compton and his family, Orlando, Ludovic and Sasha (Alexandra).

In 1979 a newly constructed adventure playground was opened by Sir Jackie Stewart. A 2007 TV adaptation of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park was filmed at the Hall. Newby Hall also holds the National Collection of the genus Cornus (dogwoods).

KILPIN: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #11 of 172

This parish of the East Riding might be one of the smallest yet one of the most important we’ve covered yet so far in the district. It has a very small population, but what goes on in this area of the East Riding is key to what happens worldwide – and no that really is not an exaggeration.

The River Ouse is at the heart of proceedings here again. The river is a vital link to the Humber and of course to the North Sea as we’ve seen from the other side of the riverbank in previous videos, but imagine how effective the river port at Goole would be if it wasn’t able to be accessed by vessels further upstream if a railway line was blocking its path. That’s where Skelton Viaduct comes into play – a massive swing bridge that carries the railway over the Ouse which opens to allow ships through.

The area of Kilpin Pike/Howdendyke also has its own port as well. Operated by PD Ports, if you come here you won’t be able to get close to it, but you can see part of it from the surrounding footpaths and hamlets along the riverbank. At one time, this area was awash with ships as they loaded fertilizer made in a local factory, transporting it up and down the river to landing stages where it would be used in agriculture. Thankfully there’s no mummified cats involved these days.

Village wise, there’s a handful of small settlements in this one. The delightfully small Skelton, the even smaller Balkholme and the one street that is Howdendyke which used to be much larger. The main village, if you can call it that, is almost a hamlet in itself being so tiny, but what it lacks in population it makes up for with peacefulness and beauty.

Yes, make no mistake, this part of the East Riding plays a vital role in how the world turns. Welcome to KILPIN.

Places to see in ( Yorkshire - UK ) Valley Gardens

Places to see in ( Yorkshire - UK ) Valley Gardens

The Valley Gardens, in Low Harrogate, is the town's main park and covers much of the area originally known as 'Bogs Field', where a number of springs were discovered. Valley Gardens has an ice cream parlour, children's play area with outdoor paddling pool, a skate park, frisbee golf, crazy golf and mini golf. The Sun Pavilion at the northern edge of the park can be privately hired. Tennis courts and a bowling green are in the west of the park. The Friends Of Valley Gardens group was formed in 2009 to support the park. It works in partnership with Harrogate Borough Council to guide the park’s development.

Valley Gardens and the adjacent Pinewoods in Harrogate comprise about 17 acres of park, woodland, and floral displays. It is believed that a greater number of mineral springs come to the surface in Valley Gardens than in any other known location on earth. Thirty-six of Harrogate’s eighty-eight mineral wells are found within the gardens, with no two being alike. The floral displays are spectacular and include a magnificent dahlia garden and seasonal bedding displays that are re-planted throughout the year. For more information about Valley Gardens, please visit the Harrogate Borough Council web page. The main entrance to Valley Gardens is situated at the junction of Cornwall Road, Valley Drive and Royal Parade Harrogate.
