Considered as one of the most unconquerable forts of the country, Jalore Fort has a famous saying about itself- “Let the sky be torn, the earth turned upside down, let the iron armour be cut to pieces, body fighting alone, but Jalore would not surrender”. Built in traditional Hindu architecture style, the Jalore Fort is erected over a steep hill 1200 Meters high. Jalore fort was built so high that it was suitable to have a panoramic view of the whole town. Hence, the whole city was commanded from over there.

The actual construction period of Jalore fort is unknown, however, it is believed that the fort was built in between 8th-10th century. Jalore city was ruled by the Parmar Rajputs in the 10th century. Jalore Fort is a 10th-century fort and one of the nine castles of “Maru” (Desert) that was under the Parmaras (A dynasty of Rajput Kings).

It was in 1311 when Ala-Ud-Din-Khilji, Sultan of Delhi attacked and destroyed the fort. The ruins of the fort are prime attractions of the tourists, who come here to have a sneak peek into the History of India.

Jalore - among most famous and impressive forts of Rajasthan - Sonagir or ‘golden mount’

Famously known as Granite City, Jalore is a city located in the vibrant state of Rajasthan. The small, industrious town is famous for its stone quarries and for producing some of the finest granite in the world. Jalore, also spelt as Jalor, was initially known as Jabalipura after a renowned saint Maharishi Jabali who hailed from the same region. The town later went on to be known as Swarnagiri meaning 'golden mountain', which is also where the famous Jalore Fort stands.

The main attraction of Jalore is the Jalore Fort. Known to be one of the unconquerable and impregnable forts of the country, the impressive Jalore Fort is perched atop a steep hill. While the actual time period of construction of this massive fort is unknown, it is roughly believed to be sometime between the 8th - 10th century.

The fort's stone wall is still sturdy and intact in many places, leaving the visitors to imagine what a strong structure it once must have been. A desolated palace, few water tanks, mosques and tombs and old temples dedicated to Shiva and other gods and goddesses can be seen inside the fort. Few beautiful Jain temples can also be seen in the fort's premises. The oldest temple of Adinath, carved in white marble is a spectacular structure that cannot be missed here.

Famed for its numerous quarries, Jalore has risen to prominence for producing some of the finest granite in the world. Originally a small town, industrial growth has helped Jalore grow by leaps and bounds in recent times.
The ‘tope khana’ or cannon foundry at Jalore Fort is the foremost tourist attraction of Jalore and it provides stunning views of the city. The city is also famed for the Sundha Mata Temple which was built around 900 years ago and is sacred to the devotees of goddess Chamunda Devi.

Believed to be found in the 8th century AD, Jalore was originally called Jabalipur in honour of the saint Maharishi Jabali. The town was also known as Swarngiri, after the hill at the foot of which it is situated. Over the centuries a number of clans ruled over Jalore including the Gurjara Pratiharas, the Parmars and the Chauhans until the city was captured and destroyed by the Sultan of Delhi, Ala-Ud-Din-Khilji. After 4 centuries the city was finally restored back to the rulers of Marwar in 1704.

Passengers board a bus from Jalore Bus Station in Rajasthan

People board a bus from the Jalore Bus Stand in Rajasthan. At the station other than the buses, cows seem pretty common especially when the cow walks up to the bus creating an illusion of boarding the bus.

Jalore is located at the foothills of Swarnagiri Mountain just 140 Km from Jodhpur and 340 Km from Ahmedabad. In recent times, the industrial growth in the district, particularly in Jalore, has been remarkable due to the world famous granite tiles and slabs. Presently there are 500 units producing high-quality granite products. It earns good revenue for the state; therefore it is one of the key cities of the state.

It has been tapobhumi (Land of Meditation) of Mahirishi Jabali, in the ancient time it was named after him Jabalipur, today it is known as Jalore which is a district headquarter.
