A journey from Woluwe-Saint-Pierre to Waterloo on a beautiful September afternoon. Fall is in the air!
The name of Waterloo was mentioned for the first time in 1102 designating a small hamlet at the limit of what is today known as the Sonian Forest, along a major road linking Brussels, Genappe and a coal mine to the south. Waterloo was located at the intersection of the main road and a path leading to a small farming settlement in what is now Cense. The crossing can still be found today as the intersection of the Chaussée de Bruxelles with Boulevard de la Cense. Waterloo was a place where travellers and merchants, particularly those carrying coal from the mine to the south, could find rest and protection from bandits.
Waterloo was located in the Duchy of Brabant created in 1183 with Leuven as the capital city. The Duchy of Brabant extended from Luttre to 's-Hertogenbosch in 1477. Brussels became the capital city of the Duchy of Brabant in 1267 and the capital city of the Burgundian Netherlands in 1430.
Waterloo started to develop during the 17th century. A royal chapel was built in 1687 in Petit-Waterloo, and was extended in 1826, becoming the Church of Saint Joseph of Waterloo.
During the late 18th century, whilst the region was under the rule of the Holy Roman Empire, a period of unrest marked the wake of the 1789 French Revolution. Reforms designed to quell those agitating to bring enlightenment ideas to the region were unsuccessful. in 1794, the French invaded, bringing an end to the region's Ancien Régime, encompassing the monasteries, their official record-keeping, and the privileges of the nobility.
Up until 1796, Waterloo was divided into two parts, Grand-Waterloo and Petit-Waterloo, depending, respectively, of the parishes of Braine-l'Alleud (Bishopric of Namur) and of Saint-Genesius-Rode (Bishopric of Mechelen). A new system based on municipalities was established under French rule. The municipality of Waterloo was created from Petit-Waterloo detached from Sint-Genesius-Rode and three former hamlets (Grand-Waterloo, Joli-Bois, Mont-Saint-Jean) detached from Braine-l’Alleud.
In 1813, half of the hamlet of Chenois was detached from Braine-l’Alleud and became part of Waterloo. In 1824, Waterloo grew again as the areas Roussart and Sainte-Gertrude from the Sonian Forest became part of the municipality. Waterloo had 1,571 inhabitants in 1801 and 3,202 in 1846.
In 1795, the invaded territories were divided into nine departments. Some municipalities, including Waterloo, became part of the Dyle department, which became the province of Brabant Méridional in 1815 under Dutch rule, following the defeat of Napoleon. Upon Belgian independence in 1830, it became part of the province of Brabant.
In 1977, the second half of the hamlet of Chenois was detached from Braine-l’Alleud and became part of Waterloo together with a part of the hamlet next to the Lion.
In 1995, the province of Brabant was divided to match the limits of the administrative regions of Wallonia, Brussels and Flanders created in 1980. The part in which Waterloo is situated became the province of Walloon Brabant.
The Battle of Waterloo took place near Waterloo on 18 June 1815 between the First French Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Seventh Coalition (troops from Prussia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Hanover, Brunswick and Nassau), under the main allied commanders, the Duke of Wellington and General von Blücher.

Het ringvormige gebied wordt soms onderscheiden in de noordrand, oostrand, zuidrand en westrand. De zes faciliteitengemeenten waar de verfransing van Vlaanderen speelt, kennen beperkte taalrechten voor Franstaligen. Alle 19 gemeenten maken deel uit van de provincie Vlaams-Brabant en behoren (met uitzondering van Tervuren dat tot het arrondissement Leuven behoort) tot het arrondissement Halle-Vilvoorde (en dus tot het voormalige kiesarrondissement B-H-V). Hoewel de randgemeenten geen bestuurlijk of administratief geheel vormen, genieten ze vanwege de Vlaamse overheden wel een bijzondere belangstelling en sommige gunsten, omdat ze door de nabijheid van het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest te maken hebben met een aantal specifieke uitdagingen op vlak van verkeer, ruimtelijke ordening, internationalisering, grondspeculatie, milieuvervuiling en taalpolitiek. De Vlaamse regering neemt specifieke maatregelen om de verfransing van haar grondgebied tegen te gaan.
De 19 gemeenten grenzen aan een Brusselse gemeente of aan een randgemeente met taalfaciliteiten: zes faciliteitengemeenten Drogenbos, Kraainem, Linkebeek, Sint-Genesius-Rode, Wemmel en Wezembeek-Oppem en de gemeenten Asse, Beersel, Dilbeek, Grimbergen, Hoeilaart, Machelen, Meise, Merchtem, Overijse, Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Tervuren, Vilvoorde en Zaventem. Volgens een ruimere definitie horen ook volgende gemeenten bij de brede Rand: Affligem, Gooik, Halle, Huldenberg, Kampenhout, Kortenberg, Lennik, Liedekerke, Pepingen, Steenokkerzeel en Ternat

VERTREK: Op de parking van het Kultuur Centrum en gaan vandaar naar Wauterbos , we volgen nu de Wauterbosstraat 166 meter , daar slaan we rechts de Dwarshaagstraat in en volgen deze 356 meter tot op het Koningsplein ( of beter gekend onder de inwoners als ' Den DRIES' .
We steken nu het plein over om aan de overkant links de Hof Ten Houtstraat in te slaan om na 105 meter rechts een Voetweg in te slaan.Nu gaan we in de richting van het Kwadebeekdal na een afdaling van 165 meter komen we aan de Kwadebeek deze steken we over en gaan 138 meter in stijgende lijn.
Nu slaan we rechts af aan een weide-afsluiting om na 81 meter aan een Twee-sprong links af te slaan en komen dan na 136 meter op een T-splitsing uit met de Kwadeplas(straat) , we volgen deze 366 meter tot aan een T-splitsing met de Hof Ten Houtstraat die slaan we rechts in . Na 453 meter komen we uit op een Kruising waar we links de Gravendreef in slaan om na 410 meter links de dreef verder te volgen.
We volgen verder de Gravendreef 1031 meter tot aan een Kruising (hier zijn we op een hoogte van 128 meter) , aan de Kruising gaat het lichtjes berg op in de Varkensdreef (nu wandelen we op het grondgebied van Waterloo , rechts het Waterloosveld) na 511 meter komen we aan de spoorwegbrug die we over gaan.We nemen hier direkt links een voetweg langs de spoorlijn Brussel-Charleroi en volgen deze 947 meter tot aan een kleuterschool waar we eerst rechts en dan direkt links naar de Kerk van de Hoek gaan dit 85 meter.
Rechtover de kerk steken we de Gehuchtstraat over om verder te wandelen in de Schoolstraat , na 404 meter komen we aan een T-splitsing met de Bierenbergstraat die we rechts in slaan en volgen deze 266 meter tot aan een Kruising , waar we links de Dragonderstraat in slaan om na 205 meter aan een Twee-sprong links in te slaan aan de vijver van Thys. Dit is het Visserspad om na 138 meter aan een Driesprong links het Visserspad te blijven volgen , hier komen we in het dal van de Molenbeek , we volgen nu het Visserspad (links van ons zien we enkele vijvers) om na een afstand van 816 meter uit te komen aan een T-splitsing met de Hoekstraat.
De Hoekstraat slaan we nu links in , om na 197 meter aan een spoorwegbrug uit te komen , die we hier onder doorgaan en de Hoekstraat verder blijven volgen 124 meter , aan een T-splitsing gekomen gaan we de Bronweg af dit 77 meter om dan links de Gladiolenstraat in te slaan om dan na 30 meter rechts de Pioenenstraat in te slaan en volgen deze straat tot aan een Kruising 351 meter met rechts van ons een kapel.
We blijven aan de Kruising rechtdoor volgen tot aan een T-splitsing met Wauterbos waar we rechts in slaan om na 166 meter aan ons vertrekpunt uit te komen.
