The city started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie and in the Late Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe, with some 50,000 people in 1300. It is a port and university city.
The municipality comprises the city of Ghent proper and the surrounding towns of Afsnee, Desteldonk, Drongen, Gentbrugge, Ledeberg, Mariakerke, Mendonk, Oostakker, Sint-Amandsberg, Sint-Denijs-Westrem, Sint-Kruis-Winkel, Wondelgem and Zwijnaarde. With 240,191 inhabitants in the beginning of 2009,[2] Ghent is Belgium's second largest municipality by number of inhabitants. The metropolitan area, including the outer commuter zone, covers an area of 1,205 km2 (465 sq mi) and has a total population of 594,582 as of 1 January 2008, which ranks it as the fourth most populous in Belgium.[3][4] The current mayor of Ghent, Daniël Termont, leads a coalition of the Socialistische Partij Anders, Groen and Open VLD.
The ten-day-long Ghent Festival (Gentse Feesten in Dutch) is held every year and attended by about 1–1.5 million visitors.

Much of the city's medieval architecture remains intact and is remarkably well preserved and restored. Its centre is the largest carfree area in Belgium. Highlights are the Saint Bavo Cathedral with the Ghent Altarpiece, the belfry, the Gravensteen castle, and the splendid architecture along the old Graslei harbour. Ghent has established a blend between comfort of living and history; it is not a city-museum. The city of Ghent also houses three béguinages and numerous churches including Saint-Jacob's church, Saint-Nicolas' church, Saint Michael's church and St. Stefanus.
In the 19th century Ghent's most famous architect, Louis Roelandt, built the university hall Aula, the opera house and the main courthouse. Highlights of modern architecture are the university buildings (the Boekentoren or Book Tower) by Henry Van de Velde. There are also a few theatres from diverse periods.
The beguinages, as well as the belfry and adjacent cloth hall, were recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites in 1998 and 1999.
The Zebrastraat, a social experiment in which an entirely renovated site unites living, economy and culture, can also be found in Ghent.
Campo Santo is a famous Catholic burial site of the nobility and artists.

Important museums in Ghent are the Museum voor Schone Kunsten (Museum of Fine Arts), with paintings by Hieronymus Bosch, Peter Paul Rubens, and many Flemish masters; the SMAK or Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (City Museum for Contemporary Art), with works of the 20th century, including Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol; and the Design Museum Gent with masterpieces of Victor Horta and Le Corbusier. The Huis van Alijn (House of the Alijn family) was originally a beguinage and is now a museum for folk art where theatre and puppet shows for children are presented. The Museum voor Industriële Archeologie en Textiel or MIAT displays the industrial strength of Ghent with recreations of workshops and stores from the 1800s and original spinning and weaving machines that remain from the time when the building was a weaving mill. The Ghent City Museum (Stadsmuseum, abbreviated STAM), is committed to recording and explaining the city's past and its inhabitants, and to preserving the present for future generations.
Restaurants and culinary traditions[edit]
In Ghent and other regions of East-Flanders, bakeries sell a donut-shaped bun called a mastel (plural mastellen), which is basically a bagel. Mastellen are also called Saint Hubert bread, because on the Saint's feast day, which is 3 November, the bakers bring their batches to the early Mass to be blessed. Traditionally, it was thought that blessed mastellen immunized against rabies.
Ghent has the world's largest number of vegetarian restaurants per capita.[13]

The city is host to some big cultural events such as the Gentse Feesten, I Love Techno in Flanders Expo, the 10 Days Off musical festival, the International Film Festival of Ghent (with the World Soundtrack Awards) and the Gent Festival van Vlaanderen (nl).

Most notably, Ghent boasts a nature reserve (Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen, 230 hectare[14]) and a recreation park (Blaarmeersen, 87 hectares)

Vandaag (10 januari 2020) namen we de bus naar Brussel. Na een uurtje op de bus te hebben doorgebracht kwamen we eindelijk aan in Brussel.
Brussel is de hoofdstad van België, van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, de Franse Gemeenschap en het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest. Is de moeite om eens gaan te bezoeken.

GRIMBERGEN
Deze namiddag namen we voor het eerst na een lange tijd, wegens de corona, opnieuw de bus om Grimbergen te gaan bezichtigen.
Grimbergen is een plaats en gemeente in de provincie Vlaams-Brabant in België. De gemeente, die de benaming Parel van Brabant deelt met de Nederlandse dorpen Oisterwijk en Heeze, telt iets meer dan 37.000 inwoners. De gemeente wordt gerekend tot de streek Brabantse Kouters.
De Abdij van Grimbergen is een norbertijnenabdij in de Brabantse circarie. Ze ligt in Grimbergen, ongeveer 10 kilometer ten noorden van Brussel. Het is de oudste bewoonde norbertijnenabdij van België. Het embleem van de abdij is de feniks, ontleend aan de Griekse mythologie.
De Sint-Servaasbasiliek in Grimbergen wordt beschouwd als een van de mooiste en meest harmonieuze barokkerken in de Lage Landen. De kerk maakt deel uit van de norbertijnerabdij van Grimbergen maar doet tevens dienst als parochiekerk.
Grimbergen heeft een Belgisch abdijbier Grimbergen. Het wordt gebrouwen door Brouwerijen Alken-Maes te Alken. Alken-Maes is sinds 2008 een onderdeel van Heineken, maar bij de overname werd het merk Grimbergen toegewezen aan Brouwerij Carlsberg. Heineken kreeg wel een langdurige licentie op het merk.

This afternoon, for the first time after a long time, we took the bus to visit Grimbergen.
Grimbergen is a town and municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant in Belgium. The municipality, which shares the name Pearl of Brabant with the Dutch villages Oisterwijk and Heeze, has just over 37,000 inhabitants. The municipality is part of the Brabant Kouters region.
The Grimbergen Abbey is a Premonstratensian abbey in the Brabant Circus. It is located in Grimbergen, about 10 kilometres north of Brussels. It is the oldest inhabited Premonstratensian abbey in Belgium. The abbey's emblem is the phoenix, borrowed from Greek mythology.
The Basilica of Saint Servatius in Grimbergen is considered to be one of the most beautiful and harmonious Baroque churches in the Low Countries. The church is part of the Norbertine abbey of Grimbergen but also serves as a parish church.
Grimbergen has a Belgian abbey beer called Grimbergen. It is brewed by Brouwerijen Alken-Maes in Alken. Alken-Maes has been part of Heineken since 2008, but when it was taken over, the Grimbergen brand was assigned to the Carlsberg brewery. Heineken did, however, receive a long-term licence for the brand.

Voor ons tweede dagje op rij, trokken we naar Brussel. Deze keer deden we een wandeling langs het water richting Molenbeek, om vandaar een wandeling te maken langs het kanaal , waar mijn ventje jaren gewerkt had in Avenue du Port. Na een wandeling te maken in het park van Tour en Taxis, namen we terug de bus naar huis.

For our second day in a row, we headed to Brussels. This time we did a walk along the water towards Molenbeek, and from there a walk along the canal, where my husband had worked for years in Avenue du Port. After a walk in the park of Tour en Taxis, we took the bus back home.

De stad Leuven ligt centraal in België, in de provincie Vlaams-Brabant. Leuven is met ongeveer honderdduizend inwoners een middelgrote stad in België. Het ligt op ruim dertig kilometer van de Belgische hoofdstad Brussel. Leuven heeft de bijnaam ‘Bierhoofdstad van België”. Deze naam is gebaseerd op een tweetal elementen: de aanwezigheid van de Artois-brouwerij (tegenwoordig Anheuser-Busch InBev) en de vele studenten die in Leuven studeren aan de KU Leuven of andere scholen. Het bier vloeit rijkelijk binnen het studentenleven. Vooral op de Oude Markt worden er wekelijks heel wat glaasjes Stella Artois en andere bieren weggetapt. Als bezoeker kom je terecht in een dynamische, jonge stad waar altijd wel iets te beleven valt. Diverse festivals, feesten en andere evenementen staan op de jaarlijkse kalender. In de zomermaanden vallen deze samen onder Het Groot Verlof. Als er niets georganiseerd wordt kun je in Leuven heerlijk winkelen, genieten van heerlijke spijzen en dranken, fietstochten maken of de bezienswaardigheden van de stad ontdekken. Niet voor niets dat Leuven steevast een hoge positie heeft in de top 10 van best bezochte Belgische steden.

SINT-NIKLAAS : de Euromarkt
Dit weekend was het Euromarkt in Sint-Niklaas gedurende 3 dagen. Het evenement vond plaats op de Grote Markt daar, en bracht veel bezoekers op de been. De weergoden waren hen goedgezind, dus kon dit schitterend weekend niet meer stuk .Zaterdag zijn we eens een kijkje gaan nemen, en het was de moeite waard.
De Euromarkt was één van dé topevenementen van de Sint-Niklase zomer. Al voor de vijfde keer zakten marktkramers en ambachtelijke producenten uit heel Europa af naar Sint-Niklaas voor deze ongeëvenaarde en onvergetelijke marktbeleving. De voorbije edities bracht de Euromarkt telkens vele tienduizenden bezoekers naar het Sint-Niklase stadscentrum. En dat was deze keer niet anders . Het programma was dan ook veelbelovend en bijzonder smakelijk!

This weekend was Euromarkt in Sint-Niklaas for 3 days. The event took place on the Grote Markt there, and attracted many visitors. The weather gods were in their favor, so this wonderful weekend could not go wrong. On Saturday we went to have a look, and it was worth it.
The Euromarkt was one of the top events of the Sint-Niklaas summer. For the fifth time already, market vendors and artisan producers from all over Europe came to Sint-Niklaas for this unparalleled and unforgettable market experience. In previous editions, the Euromarkt brought tens of thousands of visitors to the city center of Sint-Niklaas. And this time was no different. The program was very promising and particularly tasty!

SINT-AMANDS AAN DE SCHELDE
Sint-Amands is een dorp in de Belgische provincie Antwerpen en een deelgemeente van Puurs-Sint-Amands. Sint-Amands ligt op de rechteroever van de Schelde. Het grondgebied van deze deelgemeente heeft de vorm van een vijfhoek, en wordt langs 3 zijden omgeven door de Vlaamse provincie Oost-Vlaanderen. Het dorp ligt op de rechteroever van de Schelde en behoort tot de mooiste dorpen van België.
Sint Amands is een oud dorp waarvan zeker weten dat het al in de negende eeuw bestond. Er zijn echter geen gebouwen of andere bewijzen uit deze periode bewaard gebleven. Het oudste gebouw in het dorp is de Sint-Amanduskerk uit de zeventiende eeuw. Verder zijn er nog enkele buizen uit de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw te vinden. Mede hierdoor kun je een goed beeld krijgen van hoe het dorp er vroeger moet hebben uitgezien. De mooiste huizen van het dorp zijn te vinden aan de Kerkstraat.

Sint-Niklaas Belgium to Hulst The Netherlands
The video shows you the departure of the Sint-Niklaas bus station where there are 10 dozens of buses per hour. I take the bus to Hulst Netherlands.
It is 45 minutes to the Netherlands, the departure you see and a piece that you arrive in Hulst. But in the Netherlands you only have 1 regional bus per hour until 6 p.m.
Only the Belgian bus has this line 7 out of 7 and this for a rate of only 1,6 euros per ride ! The region of Zeeland Netherlands has no public transport, only 1 bus 20, 2 per hour to Goes at 90 min and the bus 10 to 6 pm who does not drive to Hulst on weekends. Many people work in Belgium and sleep in the Netherlands hahaha ;)

Roeselare (Roulers in French) is a town in Belgium in the Flemish province of West Flanders. Roeselare has 65,000 citizens.
The name of the city is derived from two Germanic words meaning reed and open space, i.e., a marsh in a forest glade. Roeselare's minor seminary is famous for having hosted the famous Flemish poets Guido Gezelle, Albrecht Rodenbach and missionary Jesuit Constant Lievens. Aan zee te Blankenberge (Belgische kust)
Vandaag gaven ze in het binnenland 30 graden, dus trokken we richting kust naar Blankenberge omdat ze daar maar 23 graden gaven. En inderdaad het is niet warmer geworden, en de helderblauwe lucht zoals we maandag gehad hadden was ook niet van de partiij, spijtig genoeg.
Blankenberge is een plaats en stad in de Belgische provincie West-Vlaanderen. De inwoners, worden Blankenbergenaars genoemd. Blankenberge is een van de belangrijkste badplaatsen aan de Belgische kust wat het aantal toeristen en hotelreserveringen betreft.
