Places to see in ( Skipton - UK )

Places to see in ( Skipton - UK )

Skipton is a market town and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, Skipton is on the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to the south of the Yorkshire Dales, 16 miles (26 km) northwest of Bradford and 38 miles (61 km) west of York.

Skipton Castle was built in 1090 as a wooden motte-and-bailey by Robert de Romille, a Norman baron. In the 12th century William le Gros strengthened it with a stone keep to repel attacks from the Kingdom of Scotland to the north, the castle elevated Skipton from a poor dependent village to a burgh administered by a reeve. The protection offered by Skipton Castle during the Middle Ages encouraged the urbanisation of the surrounding area, and during times of war and disorder the town attracted an influx of families. It is now one of the most complete and best preserved medieval castles in England and is open to the public.

Skipton became a prosperous market town, trading sheep and woollen goods: its name derives from the Old English sceap (sheep) and tun (town or village). A market stemming from its formative years still survives. In the 19th century, Skipton emerged as a small mill town connected to the major cities by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and its branch Thanet Canal, (known locally as 'Springs branch canal'), but during the 20th century Skipton's economy shifted to tourism, aided by its historic architecture and proximity to the Yorkshire Dales. Since 1974, Skipton has been the seat of Craven District Council. The Skipton Building Society was founded in the town.

Today, main events in Skipton include the annual heritage event Skipton Sheep Day which takes place on the first Sunday in July on Skipton High Street and showcases what Skipton and the Yorkshire Dales has to offer with demonstrations, stalls, entertainment and food on offer.

Skipton lies close to the junction of the A65 road (from Leeds to the Lake District) and the A59 from York to Liverpool. Skipton railway station gives access southbound to regular services for Leeds and Bradford on the electrified Airedale Line; northbound services connect to Lancaster, Morecambe and Carlisle; the latter route is along the scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway, passing over the Ribblehead Viaduct. Skipton bus station was rebuilt in 2009. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs through Skipton and is a popular destination for tourists, with walking and boat hire.

Places to see in ( Haworth - UK )

Places to see in ( Haworth - UK )

Haworth is a village in West Yorkshire, England, in the Pennines 3 miles southwest of Keighley, 10 miles west of Bradford and 10 miles east of Colne in Lancashire. The surrounding areas include Oakworth and Oxenhope.

Haworth is a tourist destination known for its association with the Brontë sisters and the preserved heritage Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Haworth is in the Worth Valley amid the Pennines. It is 212 miles (341 km) north of London, 43 miles (69 km) west of York and 9 miles (14 km) west of Bradford.

Tourism accounts for much of the local economy, with the major attractions being the heritage railway and Brontë Parsonage Museum. In Haworth there are tea rooms, souvenir and antiquarian bookshops, restaurants, pubs and hotels including the Black Bull, where Branwell Brontë's decline into alcoholism and opium addiction allegedly began. Haworth is a base for exploring Brontë Country, while still being close to the major cities of Bradford and Leeds.

Haworth's traditional events were an annual service at Haworth Spa and the rush bearing. Spa Sunday died out in the early 20th century and the rush bearing ceremony has not been held for many years. A modern event organised by the Haworth Traders' Association is Scroggling the Holly which takes place in November.

Haworth railway station is part of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, an authentic preserved steam railway. The 43 miles (69 km) long Brontë Way leads past Lower Laithe Reservoir, Stanbury to the Brontë waterfalls, the Brontë Bridge and the Brontë Stone Chair in which (it is said) the sisters took turns to sit and write their first stories. It then leads out of the valley and up on the moors to Ponden Hall (reputedly Thrushcross Grange in Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights) and Top Withens, a desolate ruin which was reputedly the setting for the farmstead Wuthering Heights. Top Withens can also be reached by a shorter walking route departing from the nearby village of Stanbury.

Haworth is served by Keighley Bus Company rural bus service which provides links to the main local town of Keighley and the local villages of Oxenhope, Stanbury, Oakworth and Denholme. There is also a service to Hebden Bridge. Evening and Sunday services are partly paid for by Metro. Central North Street Car Park Haworth, formerly Changegate Car Park, has been subject of a Channel 4 television documentary The Yorkshire Clamper, regarding their tactics.

Driving Around Keighley Town Centre Bronte Country West Yorkshire United Kingdom

Keighley is a market town and a civil parish in the City of Bradford Borough of West Yorkshire, England. It is the second largest settlement in the borough, after Bradford.

Keighley is a pretty town, nestled between the charming countryside of Airedale and the Haworth Moorland, which is very much Bronte country.

The surrounding region is very picturesque, and Keighley has a fascinating industrial and artistic heritage.

Our first widebeam rental! Includes a boat tour.

Welcome aboard for our first widebeam holiday. Join us as we navigate the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

Welcome to my channel:

I used to be an 80s music popstar, now I'm a waterways enthusiast, with a thing for canal boats, canal boat holidays, canal walks, river walks and discovering the gorgeous English countryside.

Thirty years ago, I was in the band The Housemartins, with my talented friends Paul Heaton, Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) and Hugh Whittaker. We had chart success with songs like Happy Hour, Caravan of Love, Build and Me And The Farmer.

But that was then. These days, my happy hours consist of family time - and making films about the UK's amazing waterways. Either on foot or at the tiller of a narrowboat. I love canals, canal boats and canal boat holidays, making films about my time on or near the water. I also love to take English countryside walks alongside rivers and canals.

Usually with my mini schnauzer Mabel and new havanese puppy Rufus. I talk sometimes, Mabel and Rufus don't. But we always have fun and we'd love you to join us - just hit the SUBSCRIBE button (please!)

If you enjoy this video, give it a thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe!

We visited Yorkshire for a family holiday and discovered it was the best place to stay with so much on our doorstep! Our cottage was in Silsden, and we had Waterfalls, woodlands, the BEST views and the friendliest locals to talk to day in day out. Hands down, the best cottage to stay if you're looking for adventure. The highlight was visiting Ingleton Waterfalls, just stunning and a great family day out! Although, don't bet on the Cafe halfway round for a good stop for lunch, definitely take your own.

Saltaire - UNESCO World Heritage Site

A tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site in Saltaire, near the city of Bradford in the UK. Saltaire is a model village built for the workers of a nearby textile mill, and was intended to provide them with good clean housing, sanitation, recreational facilities, medical treatment and education for worker's children.

It's a beautiful little spot, and I was very happy to wander around enjoying the atmosphere. Some of the Industrial Revolution sites in the UK can be a bit hit and miss, so I'm glad this one was a hit!

STEETON: Selby Parish #42 of 74

We start this video off by driving along the A64 from Tadcaster, heading in a Northeasterly direction towards a road called the Old Street which is off to the left. It’s one of those places which you would barely know the existence of and there’s a good reason for that. You see, the modern day settlement is nothing like what it once was.

Within the modern day boundaries is a deserted medieval village that was thought to have been depopulated except for the Fairfax family by about 1485. The remains of the centre of the village were destroyed in the early 16th century by the construction of a pond. There are no visible remains.

Despite the presence of the A64, this remains a rural area, and farm traffic does use this road. In the UK, farm traffic cannot use motorways, but the A64 is not classified as one. The new Bilbrough Top Flyover which I drive over, opened in February 2005. The new link road includes a number of unused farm accesses, suggesting there is an aspiration to develop more of the land here.

The Hall should not be confused with a hall of the same name in Keighley in West Yorkshire. That hall is much larger and is used for all sorts of events. This one is used quite differently. It was a manor house built for Sir Guy Fairfax in around 1474. At the beginning of the 18th century the hall was partly demolished, leaving the range that is still in use as a farmhouse. In 1873, the chapel was also demolished. A private chapel, it was supposedly consecrated by Archbishop Rotherham in 1477. Much of the stone was reused after demolition to build the south side of Bilborough church.

With only 27 people here, this is one of the smallest in Selby – but it’s not THE smallest – that is still to come. Here is STEETON.

My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.
