What To See in #Shrewsbury In a Flash Visit

Nestled amongst the rolling Shropshire Hills and just a few miles from the Welsh border, the little town of Shrewsbury is a totally gorgeous place to visit.
It's the kind of place that's perfect for a day trip or weekend break, especially with all the best things to do in Shrewsbury dotted all across the town.
Of course on this flash trip, we haven't visited all places, but for sure we've enjoyed the time spent there while walking, eating and staying in pubs.
Town centre is looking nice with a lot of places to be visited, great pubs there and you can also have a walk along the Severn river admiring the area.

Therefore, we can strongly recommend the area for being visited!

Welcome to the official Postcard & A Pint YouTube channel.
Postcard & A Pint was thought up by my partner, Rachel & myself, Wills one day while taking our daily 1 hour exercise during the lockdown of 2020. All of a sudden, we were spending more time together, not working 6 or 7 days a week in the arts industry, and binge watching travel programs, and we were actually really enjoying it, and it made us re-evaluate what was important in life for us. Now back to working 6 or 7 days a week again, with very little time off, our happy time is getting out there on our brief times off together and making short travel videos that we are now sharing with you. It's just a bit of fun, and great for our sanity. Your support is hugely appreciated x

SHREWSBURY

Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. One of the most beautiful towns in the UK. Let's explore it in this gentle happy town centre walk through Shrewsbury!
Also watch our fantastic tour of Ludlow here ????????

Birthplace of Charles Darwin, Shrewsbury is set amidst the glorious Shropshire countryside near to the Welsh Borders and is one of England’s finest medieval market towns.

Shrewsbury Tourist Attractions
The town has over 600 listed buildings including the Castle and the Abbey (home of the fictional Brother Cadfael).

Relax in beautiful Quarry Park or take a boat trip on the River Severn. You will also find a huge variety of things to see and do in the surrounding countryside.

Shrewsbury Events
Each year a number of major festivals and special events are held, including the world famous Shrewsbury Flower Show.

Spring sees one of the country’s top agricultural shows – the Shropshire County Show.

August bank holiday sees the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, one of the Uk’s top folk events.

Shrewsbury Shopping
The historic centre is a shopper’s heaven packed with designer shops, smart new malls and an amazing range of independent retailers. And of course all the bars, cafes, restaurants and you could ever wish for.

Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire, in western England. It sits inside a loop of the River Severn, and its Tudor centre is lined with half-timbered houses. The medieval, red-brick Shrewsbury Castle houses the Shropshire Regimental Museum, where military artefacts include uniforms and weaponry. St Chad's Church is defined by its unique circular nave, and St Mary’s Church has elaborate stained-glass windows.

Shrewsbury was founded by the Saxons and developed by the Tudors, which probably explains why it is famed for its castle, spires, abbey and medieval buildings. Walking around the town, it’s hard not to take in the wealth of history in front of your eyes, all set around the River Severn.

So, it’s no surprise that in 1984 the cast and crew of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol transformed Shrewsbury into a snowy Victorian England for the film version of his book.

Shopaholics will love Shrewsbury as there are lots of stores to choose from. And you’ll find many of the traditional high street favourites on offer in indoor shopping malls too. But the town’s retail strength also lies in a wealth of independent shops. For example, Wyle Cop is thought to have the longest uninterrupted row of independent shops in the country.

And there are many. Shrewsbury Prison, for example, is one of the country’s oldest jails. You can take a tour walking in the footsteps of prisoners and viewing one of the last working execution rooms in the country.

The Wroxeter Roman ruins are a major draw for visitors, especially since featuring on Channel 4’s Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day. The site was once the fourth largest city in Roman Britain and visitors can take a tour around the ruins and explore the new Roman Town House.

There are plenty of eateries to choose from including traditional English pubs to Italian, Asian, French and Mexican. From Carluccio’s in the Square to the Armoury, which overlooks the river, there really is something for all tastes.

Shrewsbury Food Festival is held at the Quarry Park and around the town and features plenty of tasty treats

The town’s four-star Prince Rupert Hotel is the former home of King James I’s grandson Prince Rupert and is said to be one of the town’s finest hotels.

If you love soaking up the history of a medieval castle then the town is the perfect place to visit. Shrewsbury Castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1067 and since then has under gone several restorations.

Shrewsbury’s national award-winning indoor market offers eclectic shopping and has even been compared to some of the coolest markets in London.

Shrewsbury Farmers’ Market is also held in the town square once a month, usually on the first Friday of the month.

The town centre has a largely unspoilt medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, were founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. Shrewsbury is the birthplace of Charles Darwin and is where he spent 27 years of his life.

10 Poorest Places in The UK

What are the poorest places in the UK? The last thing that’ll come to mind when the UK is mentioned is poverty. It’s not among the countries you’ll associate poverty with. This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. You’ll find some of them among the areas left behind in England, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities have to do something about these 10 poorest places in the UK.
10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.
