Best Place to Ski in Japan | You NEED To Go Here
Welcome back to Japan! Today we are heading up to a skii resort to finally learn how to skii.
We are staying in an area called Kannabe in the Kansai region of Japan. Here we visited two skii resorts and did sooo many snow activities, from skiing, to snowmobile, sledding and more.
We even did such a unique activity, having a Japanese style BBQ inside of an igloo!

Morioka is a city on Japan’s Honshu island. Iwate Park, known for its spring cherry blossoms and fall colors, is home to the ruins of 17th-century Morioka Castle.
Nearby, Ishiwarizakura is a centuries-old cherry tree growing from a cracked boulder. Hoonji Temple houses hundreds of Buddhist statues. Kaiunbashi Bridge offers views of Mount Iwate. To the west, there are hot springs at Tsunagi, on the shore of Gosho Lake.

I was lucky enough to visit the Iwate Prefecture with some friends and this is the first vlog in the series. In this video, we visited Shizukuishi, which is not far from Morioka City. Read on to find out more…

Resort Base: The Prince Hotel (ski in ski out)
Best way to get there: 2 hours by Shinkansen from Tokyo and 50 minutes on a shuttle bus from Morioka station to Shizukuishi Prince Hotel (Free for guests of the Prince Hotel or $17AUD)
Food to try: Miso ramen in the Anekko restaurant building (next to The Prince Hotel)
Must Visit: The Takakura onsen on the first floor of the hotel!
Situated 40 minutes Northwest of Morioka, Shizukuishi resort is like a step back into the 90’s with 11 runs and plenty of character. Shizukuishi is a Prince Resort which means tree skiing is not allowed but with many of the runs ungroomed, it wasn’t hard to find fresh snow. It’s a great place to get your legs and experience a taste of Japanese powder snow.
Shizukuishi also has a cat skiing operation that has a group leaving on the hour, every hour with 5-minute shuttles from the main resort. The cat run is on the old downhill course from 1993 which would make for some nice wide turns in theory but since the cat followed its own path up and down, you had the choice of skiing freshly groomed snow or skiing alongside it in a clear open field of powder. Since the run was for a world cup competition, it still has just the right amount of slope that if you really want to go for it, you’ll leave a trail of dust (or in this case fluffy powder) in your wake.

Shizukuishi Cat Skiing in Japan offers some fun snowcat skiing adjacent to the Shizukuishi Ski Resort, and is a nice addition to an Iwate ski or snowboard road trip.

Koiwai Farm ( Shizukuishi Town )
In the beautiful pastoral area called the Makiba-en, you can milk a cow, take a ride on a horse or part of the restored horse tramway, watch the sheep-and-dog show, and much more. At the Makiba Astronomical Observatory, you can observe sunspots by day and the expanse of the stars by night. In winter, the Makiba-en is free, and also hosts the popular Iwate Snow Festival.
Another great reason to visit Koiwai is its delicacies. Try the rich, milky soft serve ice cream made with the Farm's fresh milk and eggs, and the fluffy omelet stuffed with rice.
Admission is free during the winter season; many people come to enjoy the Iwate Snow Festival held at Koiwai. About 750,000 people visit Koiwai every year.
A number of the farm buildings at, Kamimaru Gyusha, such as the silos, the six cowsheds, and the head office, have been named National Tangible Cultural Properties. These buildings are just part of the exquisite scenery of Koiwai, which has been used as a shooting location for television dramas and the 2003 film When the Last Sword Is Drawn. ( Yojiro Takita, the director of When the Last Sword is Drawn, has since won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film with his 2008 film Departures. ) Fans of these productions flock here regularly, as do those of Iwate's most famous author, Miyazawa Kenji, who wrote of Koiwai and its landmarks. For example, the nearby Oi no Mori ( Wolves' Forest ) appears in Kenji's writings, and together with six other beautiful scenic spots from his works, form part of a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty ( The Scenery of Ihatov ) .
But perhaps the most famous and memorable view of Koiwai is the Solitary Cherry Tree, blooming in spring against the backdrop of snow-covered Mt. Iwate. This magnificent century-old cherry tree in the pasture next to the factory was originally planted about 100 years ago to provide a pleasant shade for the cows on the farm
Since production of foodstuffs takes place on the farm, tours of the farm are limited to designated viewing areas along the wide-area farm road, for hygienic reasons. Smoking and open fire are prohibited in the area, including the parking lots and the viewing areas.
