Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park Walking Tour in Hokkaido 2023
Upopoy is the name of a museum and cultural facility dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Ainu culture. Located in Shiraoi Town, Shiraoi District, Hokkaido, the museum features exhibits on Ainu history, culture, and the natural environment. It also offers a wide variety of programs to touch and experience Ainu culture. The facility was established to deepen understanding and awareness of Ainu culture, and is a valuable place for cultural exchange for visitors to Hokkaido.
It is also very famous as the sacred place for Golden Kamuy.
What is Ainu?
The Ainu are one of the oldest inhabitants of the Japanese archipelago. They are distributed in the northern part of the Japanese archipelago, especially in Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and the northern Tohoku region. They speak the Ainu language, have their own culture and customs, and have engaged in traditional subsistence activities such as hunting, fishing, and gathering.
Historically, the Ainu were the first people to inhabit the Japanese archipelago, already in the Yayoi period. However, their lives underwent major changes in the modern era and beyond. In the Meiji Era, their land and culture were forcibly taken away and assimilation policies were implemented. As a result, their culture and livelihood were severely damaged, and the Ainu language and culture are now in a state of crisis.
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need to protect Ainu culture and the rights of the Ainu people, and the Ainu people themselves are making efforts to establish self-awareness and identity, and to pass on and revitalize their culture.
