2 Day Trip to Matsushima & Sendai Directly from Narita Airport | japan-guide.com

In this video we are heading directly to Miyagi Prefecture from Narita Airport by overnight bus. On the first day we'll explore the Shiogama area, known for it's fish market and shrine. Then take a pleasant cruise through Matsushima Bay past the many pine covered islands that dot the bay. Lastly we'll explore the quaint port town of Matsushima.
On day two we head to the big city of Sendai where we ride the Loople Sendai bus to many famous spots including Zuihoden and Aoba Castle. We end the day and trip walking through the large shopping arcade which leads back to Sendai Station.

On the hunt for local Sendai street food like zunda (ずんだ - edamame paste sweets) and gyutan (牛タン - beef tongue), Shizuka Anderson visits Sendai Asaichi Morning Market (仙台朝市), near Sendai Station. Contrary to its name, the Sendai morning market is open through the afternoon and early evening, offering hot and delicious Japanese street foods and warm hospitality to visitors. Filled with local mom and pop shops, Sendai Asaichi is known for tasty treats, from savory treats made with their regional Sendai miso to unexpected beef tongue dishes.
Shizuka also learns about a local “God of Fortune,” Sendai Shiro (仙台 四郎), and visits the temple where he is enshrined. Legend has it that Sendai Shiro was a kind man with an intellectual disability, who was always smiling. All of the shops where he was warmly welcomed prospered, so he was considered a good luck charm by the businesses in the area. Their prosperity is a testament to the value of kindness and hospitality, and today Sendai Shiro’s image can be seen in many restaurants in the area.
While coastal areas of Sendai suffered extensive damage from the 3/11/11 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the warm hospitality and friendliness of the local people is leading the city towards recovery.

Sendai... the City of Trees, Date Masamune, Gyutan and Zunda! Sendai is located in Miyagi Prefecture and it is the biggest city in the Tohoku Region (Northeast Japan) with roughly 1 million citizens. I spent one year in Sendai as an exchange student at Tohoku University and let me guide you to my favorite places in Sendai!

2020年初詣は塩釜にある塩竈神社。志波彦神社を含む2つの神社があるため、宮城県の中でも広大な敷地面積。
仙台から電車に乗って13分。宮城の観光といえば松島が有名だが、塩釜も寿司が美味しく、観光名所もあるためおすすめです。
Travel to Tohoku Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture
The first visit to 2020 is Shiogama Shrine in Shiogama. With two shrines, including Shiwahiko Shrine, it is a vast site area in Miyagi Prefecture.
Matsushima is famous for sightseeing in Miyagi, but Shiogama is also recommended for its sushi and delicious sightseeing spots.
Cherry Blossoms at Shiogama Shrine in Japan
An overview of the Shiogama Shrine in Japan. Shiogama is located about 20 minutes via train from Sendai in the Migagi Prefecture-- and about 2 hours from Tokyo. We visited during April, which is Cherry Blossom season. We also had a tasty snack of odongo at the shrine which were some chewy rice cake things seasoned with red bean, soy sauce, and sesame.

Shiogama's real history began with the construction of the Jinja to mark its role as State port of nearby Tagajo Castle. However, the name of the city is derived from an ancient salt making ritual unique to the area(shio=salt, gama=cauldron).

Shiogama, located in Miyagi prefecture in Tohoku, is one of Japan's most important fishing ports and one of the busiest fish processing centers in the country. Shiogama Fish Market with its 140 stalls, is a very popular fish market and offers the best seafood all year long to both businesses and to the public.
Like in many other fish markets in Tohoku, it’s possible to pick-up whatever fish you want to create your own and extremely fresh Kaisendon (seafood/fish rice bowl) for about ¥400.
Finally, the city of Shiogama is also famous all across Japan for having the most sushi restaurants per capita in the country!!!!

Joined by her exuberant host Chie-san, Shizuka Anderson explores Shiogama Wholesale Fish Market (a.k.a. Nakaoroshi Market) to build their own kaisendon (seafood bowl) with the delicious fish on sale there.
Next, they make a stop at Shiogama Shrine, which is said to be the home of the Salt God. In fact, Shiogama translates to “salt pot,” and historically the town is famous for its seaweed salt production.
After this detour, it’s back to the food portion of the food tour, and the duo stop by a shop selling dango (sweet rice dumplings) that come in five different flavors, a rakugan (traditional Japanese sweets) store, and a green tea shop for a tea tasting.

春の宮城観光 花の名所 鹽竈神社の桜/The Shiwahiko Shrine and Shiogama Shrine, located in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture tohoku japan, have two shrines within the same ground, and become the general headquarters of shiogama Shrine throughout the country. In addition, it is also known as a leading flower attraction in Miyagi Prefecture, and in the spring there are about 40 varieties of cherry blossoms centered on Somei Yoshino and Weeping cherry blossoms. About a week after Somei Yoshino is in full bloom, a national designated natural monument Shiogamazakura blooms. On Saturdays and Sundays in late April, cherry blossoms, Approach and shrines within the precinct are fantastically lit up.
宮城県塩竈市(塩釜市)にある志波彦神社・鹽竈神社(塩釜神社)は、同一境内に二社が鎮座し、全国にある鹽竈神社の総本社となっています。また、宮城県内でも有数の花の名所としても知られ、春にはソメイヨシノや枝垂れ桜を中心に約40品種の桜が咲き、ソメイヨシノの見頃から約1週間程遅れて、八重咲品種で花弁が35～50片にもなる国指定の天然記念物「鹽竈桜(シオガマザクラ)」が咲き誇ります。ソメイヨシノなどの桜が見頃となる四月下旬の土日には、「しおがまさま神々の花灯り」も開催し、境内の桜や参道、社殿などが幻想的にライトアップされます。

Shiogama Shrine
The first temple I visited on day 10 was Shiogama Shrine in Shiogama, Miyagi. A bunch of stairs led to a nicely sized shrine at the top of a hill. Shiogama Shrine has some anchors and is related to safe travels in the ocean!
I got there quite early so I had to wait for my signature. The buildings are pretty newly painted and the shrine has plenty to see including an old building with vending machines to take a rest inside! Enjoy your walk!
