Team Goes to Japan: Ōsaka, Nachikatsūra, Shingū, Tanabe, Kōya, Nara, Kyōto, Naoshima & Tonoshō

Two weeks of walking, driving, eating, shopping, fighting, and more!

Wakayama Quick Takes: Nachikatsuura, Hashiguiiwa Rocks and Tanabe City.

A post-Kumano Kodo hike tour of #Wakayama sights: an overnight in Nachikatsuura, a quick stop to Hashiguiiwa rocks via Kushimoto Station, and Tanabe City.

I stayed the night in a lovely hotel in #Nachikatsuura which offers in-house onsen and also really delicious meals. I had my taste of Kumano beef and it was delicious! My room also had incredible views of the coast and the sea as well!

The next day, on my way to Tanabe City, I made a quick stop at #Kushimoto along the coast to check out the #Hashiguiiwa rock formations. Beautiful andwind-swept, and you can walk to the rocks as long as the tide is low! There are cafes facing the rock formations. I had a local udon specialty whilst enjoying the view.

After Kushimoto, Tanabe City! I stayed in a machiya about 15 minutes from the Kii-Tanabe station there's a river with a boardwalk right behind it. So gorgeous! Also took a walk to Tokei shrine, one of Tanabe City's landmarks as well as an important spot for Kumano Kodo pilgrims. What a way to wrap up my Kumano Kodo journey!

Next --- Koya-san! Which is, interestingly, also plays a role in Kumano Kodo as it connects to the Kumano Grand Shrine in Hongu via the Kohechi trail. But we're not walking this time; in the near future, I hope!

Walking the streets of a quiet seaside Japanese town | Shingū, Wakayama

Shingū is a city in Wakayama Prefecture in the Kansai region of central Japan. It has about 27,000 people. It's on the Pacific Ocean coast and sits at the mouth of the important Kumano River.

I walked around the streets of Shingū one afternoon, to get a sense of life in this remote city. There is an energy and pulse to Shingu and the people, but there are also traces of decay and a sense of a community past its prime.

I really enjoyed the relaxed vibe and the cultural sites of Shingū, as well as the human spirit and the evidence of creativity on the streets. This was my first visit to the place. Hope you enjoy this stroll too.

Nachi Falls - Wakayama - 那智の大滝

After Mount Fuji, Chureito Pagoda, Obuchi Sasaba and Wakayama’s famous Taki Fall (Taki waterfall), the Seigantoji Pagoda is one of the world's most famous locations wherein a single picture so much of Japan’s beauty can be seen. Right in the center of Kumano Nachi Taisha (熊野那智大社) history, the shrine is part of a large complex of neighboring religious sites that exemplify the fusion of Buddhist and Shinto influences that is unique to the Kumano region.

The product of its proximity to the main shrine of Kumano Nachi Taisha, the Buddhist temple of Seigantoji and it’s gorgeous three-story pagoda is just as impressive as the 133 meters tall Nachi Waterfall, or Nachi No Taki, which has been venerated since the earliest Japanese people.
