Spend a day in Shimoda, Izu Peninsula

Take in the best that Shimoda has to offer.

DISCOVER IZU SHIMODA

Shimoda has 10 beaches with excellent water quality. The city's coastline is famous for its sparkling white sand and the clear water offering perfect conditions for swimming and surfing.

Shimoda is speckled with sites of spectacular geological features and scenery, called geo sites, such as Tsumekizaki seaside park, the Ryugukutsu sea cave, and Ebisu-jima Island. You will be overwhelmed by the magnificence of nature!

Shimoda Port boasts Japan’s best catch rate for kinmedai (splendid alfonsino). Whether boiled in sweetened soy sauce, as sashimi or sushi,
even as hamburgers and pizza, Shimoda's restaurants feature kinmedai dishes in various genres.

Commodore Matthew Perry landed in Shimoda with the U.S. Black Ship fleet in 1854 at the end of the Edo period. His arrival led to the opening of self-isolated Japan. Many historical sites throughout the city tell the story of those days. Also, the namako-kabe (sea cucumber) wall houses, with their eye-catching white and black lattice pattern, create a unique atmosphere.

⛵ [4K HDR] Discover Shimoda | Visit of Ryosenji Temple, Perry Road And Shimoda Port ????????

Please ???? to support our work and follow us for more virtual tours in Japan! ????????

Shimoda is definitely one of my favorite destination in Izu Peninsula!

It is located in the south of Shizuoka prefecture and it has so many beautiful things to see. Shimoda has actually an important historical heritage. As you may know, Japan stay closed to the world during the famous Edo period. But in 1853, The US commodore Mathew C. Perry requested to open the country and the signing ceremony of the Japan - US Peace Treaty was held in Ryosenji Temple in Shimoda.

We will start this walk in Ryosenji Temple and we will then walk along the gorgeous Perry road. We will follow the beautiful canal where we will be able to enjoy charming willow trees. Finally, we will arrive at Shimoda port and we will walk along the coast while enjoying a nice sea view.

Let me know what you think about Shimoda in the comments! :)

Izu peninsula, japan( 伊豆半島)
If you want to explore the rugged coastline, want to do hiking on the mountains, and love to do board surfing and play on the white sand beaches then the Izu peninsula is best for you.
Cape Irozaki (石廊崎, Irōzaki), Jogasaki Coast (城ヶ崎海岸, Jōgasaki Kaigan), Dogashima (堂ヶ島, Dōgashima), Shirahama Beach (白浜) are the best attractions of Izu peninsula.
The powerful volcanic forces shaped the Izu Peninsula. It is a perfect blend of ancient and modern Japan. The Izu Peninsula is only three hours away from Tokyo in the Shizuoka Prefecture. It is a UNESCO Global Geo park full of incredible coastlines, mountains, rivers.
Cape Irozaki (石廊崎, Irōzaki)
Irozaki is a 100-meter cape on the southernmost point of the Izu Peninsula.
Here is the Irozaki lighthouse. This Irozaki lighthouse is one of the Top 50 Lighthouses of Japan. Now it plays an important role in the safety of ships and fishing vessels.
From this lighthouse, you can get a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean.
The rocky shoreline covered with green trees and the craggy coast give breathtaking views of Irozaki. This is the best place to take wonderful photographs of blue marine, green forest, and black rocky cliffs.
You can see the vast Pacific Ocean from here. Near the horizon, you can see the seven islands of Izu and You can clearly see the curvature of the earth.
Towards the south, there is no land within over 3,800 km from here to New Guinea Island. So you can understand the incredible beauty of this place.
The rocky cliffs are made of frozen lava.
At the extreme edge of the cape, you can see a small Shrine, Kumano Shrine (熊野神社). The God of Marriage is worshiped in this shrine.
Here is IroShrine (石室神社). It is built in a hollow of the rocky cliff. Iro Shrine is dedicated to the God of sailors 1300 years ago It is a lovely little wooden shrine on the edge of the cliff.
Jogasaki Coast (城ヶ崎海岸, Jōgasaki Kaigan)
The Jogasaki Coast is a rugged volcanic cliff coastline on the eastern shore of the Izu Peninsula.
Four thousand years ago, due to the eruption of Mt. Omuro, a massive lava flow cascaded down the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula. Molten rock surged into the sea, and created a jagged coastline filled with hidden coves and tide pools.
There is an attractive hiking trail going along the Jogasaki Coast. While hiking you will get views of cliffs and lava formations.
You can enjoy the wide jogasaki coast.
Here is Kadowaki Suspension Bridge. It’s a hanging bridge.
This Kadowaki Suspension Bridge is 23 meters long and 48 meters high. This red pedestrian bridge spans a small cove between the cliffs.
It hangs above a small arm of the sea and sharp rocks. From here you can see underneath rocks and thrashing waves.
Here you can enjoy the rugged coastline more closely.
The best part of the Jogasaki coast is that you can enjoy walking on the rocky cliffs, you can sit and have fun with your family and friends.
On a sunny day, you can see 7islads from here.
Kadowaki Lighthouse is 24.9 meters in height. The lighthouse has a free observatory with a great view of the beautiful coastline and Oshima Island.
Dogashima (堂ヶ島, Dōgashima)
Dogashima is in the western part of the Izu peninsula. This place is famous for its dramatic stone formation, cliffs, caves, and beautiful clear blue ocean. Cliffs and caves are formed by the lava flow of the past volcanic eruptions and shoreline erosion.
Hundreds of years ago Dogashima was on the seabed. The pumice (pa-mice) is formed due to the Underwater volcano and accumulated ashes protrude upwards and create the white cliff. Rock veins are formed by the cooled and hardened magma.
At low tide, a strip of land appears between the mainland and the closest island. This place is called Tombolo Land Bridge. In a day almost for an hour, visitors can actually walk and reach the islands without getting feet wet. You can take a cruise boat to enter the large Tensodo Cave.
Shirahama Beach (白浜)
Shirahama Beach is in the southern part of the Izu peninsula and it is one of the most famous and popular attractions of Izu. Shirahama Beach is perfect for sunbathing, surfing, swimming, snorkeling, or just chilling. This 800-meter long beach is extremely popular in the summer. Shirahama means white sand beach.
Enjoy the amazing Izu Shimoda beach of Japan. It is the best beach in izu, due to the white sands and crystal clear waters.
This red torii gate is in the part of Shirahama Jinja Shrine. As the red-colored gate stands right next to the ocean so the contrasting color of red and ocean blue looks more beautiful. This spot is popular for taking photos and enjoying the scenery.

The best sea-side trip from Tokyo: Izu Peninsula and Shimoda

If you want to combine a visit to Tokyo with a day by the ocean, surrounded by beautiful nature then head to the Izu Peninsula - a subtropical paradise just 2.5 hours away from the city. Easily accessible by train or by car, a visit to the beaches there can be a day trip. However, to fully enjoy everything Izu has to offer - beautiful white sand beaches, snorkeling and scuba diving, hot spring spas and amazing seafood I would suggest you stay at least overnight. If you are looking for a place to stay: one of the best places is the little town of Shimoda on the southern tip of the peninsula. Shimoda is a popular holiday destination among the foreign residents here and is well set to accommodate the needs of foreign visitors. There you will find a variety of hotels, guest houses and air B&Bs. If you drive, on your way to our back from Izu try the road that goes through the middle of the peninsula. The lush tropical forests, covering the mountain slopes and the waterfalls that you see on the way are spectacular.

If you want to visit the area and need more info - leave a message in the comments of e-mail me. I will be happy to answer your question.

Shimoda, Izu

Located in the south of the Izu Peninsula is the historic seaside town of Shimoda with its surrounding white sand beaches.

Shimoda is famous as the landing place of American Commodore Perry’s ‘Black Ships’ in 1853 which is regarded as the start of diplomatic relations between Japan and the USA.

HIGHLIGHTS OF SHIMODA
1 White Sand Beaches
2 Ryugu Sea Cave
3 Shimoda Ropeway
4 Perry Road
5 Shimoda Aquarium
6 Cape Tsumekizaki
7 Ryosenji Temple & Museum of the Black Ship (MoBS)
8 Shimoda History Museum

A good place to start sightseeing in Shimoda is Perry Road which follows a canal with picturesque bridges and is full of craft stores, cafes, bars, and restaurants.

At the end of Perry Road, you will find Ryosenji Temple which has a great little museum with a collection of paintings, maps, and other artifacts related to the landing of the Black Ships.

Shimoda is home to some wonderful beaches, hot springs, and a floating aquarium where you can snorkel with dolphins making it popular with both families and outdoor enthusiasts.

SHIMODA: Summer Getaway From Tokyo (4K)

First Day Trip: SHIMODA (JR TOKYO WIDE PASS )

I decided to take a 3-day trip around Kanto Area using the JR Tokyo Wide Pass (3 days consecutive of unlimited travel on trains and Shinkansen in the area covered). This is the most convenient and money-saving way. It is for exclusive use of holders of a non-Japanese passport.
(

Shimoda in Izu Peninsula, is absolutely worth visiting in Summer. You can enjoy swimming and surfing at Shirahama Beach and there's a lot of historical sites nearby. The thing is, it's not that easy to go around. Most people go by car. There are buses but you have to wait for quite some time. But with time management, you'll be able to visit the places that you want to go.
You can rent a bike or just walk around. There are many attractions near from the station.

The easiest and fastest access to Shimoda is by JR limited express Odoriko trains from Tokyo. It goes directly to Izukyu-Shimoda Station.

The Historic town area of Shimoda includes the leafy Perry Road named after Commodore Perry who walked along on the way to Gyosenji Temple to sign the historic treaty that began the slow process of Japan opening its doors after more than 250 years of isolation.
