Places to see in ( East Wittering - UK )

Places to see in ( East Wittering - UK )

East Wittering is a coastal village in the Chichester district of West Sussex, England. The majority of the village lies within the civil parish of East Wittering and Bracklesham, while the western edge lies within the boundary of West Wittering civil parish. The village sits on the B2179 road 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Chichester, on the Manhood Peninsula.

There has been a settlement at East Wittering for over a thousand years. The Witterings were included in a grant of land to Bishop Wilfrid in the late 7th century. The area is mentioned in the Domesday Book, as part of the Hundred of Westringes (later Manhood). The Witterings together with Sidlesham were rated as 36 hides at the time of Edward the Confessor. For centuries the manor of East Wittering was in the hands of the Wystryng family, who took their name from the place.

The former 12th-century Anglican parish Church of the Assumption of St Mary the Virgin, has been replaced by the more modern St Anne's Church. St Anne's was built in the village centre during the 1950s, and the old church declared redundant in 1983. In Victorian times the RNLI raised enough subscriptions to launch a distress boat from the beach at East Wittering, a role now covered by the Fire Service.

Since then it has returned to a quiet area with a small primary school, popular with week-end surfers. Nikolaus Pevsner described the village as a jumble of bungalows and chalets near the beach in an untidy half grown up state. St Anne's Anglican Church was designed by architect Harry Sherwood who was surveyor of the fabric of Chichester Cathedral.

The whole stretch of Bracklesham Bay is a popular with many surfers. With a low beach gradient and the lack of any obvious dangers such as rips or obstacles it is a great beach for learners and with one of the UK's longest running surf clubs, Shore Surf Club.

East Wittering is most directly reached via A286 road from Chichester to Birdham followed by the B2198 road to Bracklesham before taking the B2179 road. Alternatively the B2179 can be taken in the opposite direction from Birdham for a slightly longer route via West Wittering. The B2179 road skirts the centre of the village which lies on Cakeham Road. East Wittering is served by a high frequency bus service from Chichester and Birdham passing alternatively clockwise and counter-clockwise round the Birdham, Bracklesham, East Wittering and West Wittering road loop formed by the B2198 and B2179 roads.

( East Wittering - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting East Wittering . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in East Wittering - UK

Worst RV Campground Ever // (And How we Saved our Weekend!)

***SHADY GROVE CAMPGROUND, DENVER PA***

One of our biggest camping fears came to life this past weekend as we pulled into possibly the worlds worst RV campground. While the spots were tight, the sewer connections were not and we found ourselves in a bad camping situation pretty quickly.

After a confusing run in with some of the seasonal campers, we decided it wasn't worth the stress we had to save our weekend - and in this case we only had one option. To hook our Shadow Cruiser Travel Trailer back up and head home.

Currently holding the record for our shortest camping trip (19 hours between check in and check out) it taught us a lot about vetting campgrounds, when to call it quits, and what red flags to look out for when looking for a place to camp with our travel trailer.

Towns in England – South Kirkby

What can you learn from South Kirkby, a town in England? Let’s travel to South Kirkby, one of the towns in England. This time, we’re not going to rank it. We don’t even want to discuss it as either a good or bad, beautiful or ugly, and richest or poorest town. Rather, we want to bring it to the limelight and prove that there’s much to learn about a town regardless of its size. Where is Kirkby located? What are its prominent features?
South Kirby in Perspective
South Kirkby is a small town in Wakefield in West Yorkshire. It is governed locally by the administration of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council. The town’s motto is “Friendship, Unity & Progress.” It’s a small former mining town in the Wakefield Metropolitan District. Surrounded by other former mining towns such as Hemsworth, South Elmsall, and Cudworth, it is close to the South Yorkshire border.
This little town is served by two railway stations situated 1.6 kilometers apart. One is Moorthorpe railway station on the line between Leeds and Sheffield with services being an hour on Monday to Saturday and two-hourly service on Sunday. And the other is South Elmsall railway station which is on the line between Doncaster and Leeds.
A Brief History of South Kirkby
The town appeared first in the 1086 Domesday Book and still retains the site of the ancient Saxon settlement. It was mentioned in the book as Cherchebi, which was one of the 6 manors held by Uctred. But it may also be thought to be settled even before the arrival of the ancient Norse believed to have arrived via Ireland around 900 A.D. We learned that the name Kirk-by means “church and settlement.”
Through the centuries, the ownership of this land passed through the hands of many families. Later, the Molyneux family who was Catholics purchased all of the manor lands in the 16th Century and the semblance of that continuity existed. Despite the pressures of the English Reformation, this family retained their religious beliefs and never converted to the Church of England until after the marriage of Charles William Molyneux in 1768.
For centuries, there was a Mill in the town and the flooding of land by the use of dams caused many legal disputes in the 14th century. That Corn Mill was in use until it was destroyed by fire in the early 20th century. Various leadership changes, reformation, revolution, and industrialization have transformed the town throughout the centuries.
Population and Demography of South Kirkby
The small town with a population of more than 10,000 occupies a total area of 2,450 square kilometers. This shows a density of about 3,711 residents per square kilometer. It has experienced an annual population growth of 0.69 percent since 2011, according to the ONS.
In South Kirkby, there are slightly more females than males. The females numbering 4,583, represent 50.4 percent while the 4,510 males in the town represent 49.6 percent of the population. The majority of the residents, 5,268 which is 57.9 percent are between the ages of 18 to 64. While 24.1 percent numbering 2,194 are minors under 18, only 17.9 percent of the people in this town are 65 years and above and they’re 1,631.
The town is made up of 98.9 percent White residents numbering 8,439. Other ethnic groups in South Kirkby are 24 Asians, 19 Blacks, 4 Arabs, 45 mixed or multiple ethnicities, and just two from others. About 72 percent, which is 5,789 residents of this town are Christians while 21 of them are Muslims. They also have 5 Hinduists among them with 1 Jewish, 2 Buddhists, and 24 professing other religions with as many as 2,124 claiming that are non-religious.

LAXTON AND MOORHOUSE: Newark and Sherwood Parish #8 of 84

Possibly the namesake of the town of Lexington, Massachusetts, and thus ultimately of all the other towns named Lexington in the United States, welcome to a working heritage village, sold back to the Earl Manvers Thoresby Estate in 2020. It is best known for having the last remaining working open field system in the United Kingdom.

Today, there are three open fields remaining; the Mill Field, the South Field and the West Field. There was also a fourth field, the East Field, which was considerably smaller than the others, and farmed as part of the West Field. This was fully enclosed, and today is a number of small fields. The strip fields were depicted on a postage stamp designed by David Tress that was issued in 1999 by the Royal Mail as part of their Millennium stamp series; the stamp also doubled as Royal Mail's contribution to that year's Europa postage stamp issue with the theme of Parks and Reserves.

An open field system was a common thing in the UK. Fields were divided into strips, and were farmed in common among the landowners of the village. Although the village is now recognised as an important heritage site, it is home to working farmers, who rely on that very same land for their income.

It’s also the site of the National Holocaust Centre which opened in September 1995 and was the first venue in Britain dedicated to the Holocaust as its primary purpose. The venue is based around an old farm house which has a purpose-built exhibition centre with lecture theatre, and a Memorial Garden. A feature of the garden is a black stone on which are inscribed the names of the Nazi death camps.

To the untrained eye you wouldn’t realise what the landscape was around here but one visit to the visitors centre which doubles as the Dovecote Inn, or reading the great information boards around the place you’ll soon know all about LAXTON AND MOORHOUSE.

HAMPOLE: Doncaster Parish #14 of 43

Doncaster is a historically diverse place. The town itself has a lot of history, but once you get out into the sticks, you realise just how much the entire borough has too, and not all of it you would expect to know much about, especially when the parish in today's video features some history more associated with Nottingham, some 30-40 miles away.

We have seen though even in just the handful of parishes in South Yorkshire that have been featured on the channel, how England as a whole is intrinsically linked together, like a woven mesh of fabric with layers criss-crossing each other throughout.

Perhaps then the legend of Robin Hood, who's name instantaneously brings Sherwood Forest to mind, makes some form of sense to have some history associated with it in the West of Doncaster, which was once a thick dense woodland. In fact, most of the area of this parish was covered with trees, forming Barnsdale Forest, which now only exists in clumps rather than the swathe of leaves it was.

A connection to Robin Hood isn't all in this place either. There's some old railway history too and an abandoned mansion with a gruesome story behind one of it's former residents. On top of all that, one of the country's major roads runs through the parish )whilst also providing the only road access to the cricket club). Oh and di I mention there are two villages in this parish too, the second one home to a grand old hall and church rebuilt after a 19th century fire.

There's a lot to take in here. Step forward HAMPOLE.
