National Parks
The Plitvice Lakes - Biosphere Reserve

This almost ten kilometers long wonder of nature is located in the moutainous region between Mala Kapela and Lička Plješivica, in the direction towards Dalmatia.
Legend named it Vražji vrt. It emerged in ancient times during the great drought. The inhabitants persistently prayed for a drop of water and the Black Queen who had heard their prayers granted them rain that fell continually for days until it had soaked the earth and formed a lake.
In the magical greenery of the waters, lake plants and trees 16 silver-coloured crystal-clear dark green lakes follow one after another. They are filled with water by many rivers and streams and are interconnected by foaming cascades and falls. Calcium carbonate sediment from the free-flowing waters helped by special types of algae and moss developed porous rock - sedar. This sediment covers the rocks on the shores and the bottom of the lake and gives the water a special colour and sparkling beauty.
The formation of cascades is a biodynamic process which is a first class attraction and is a particularly interesting, scientific phenomenon. Besides lakes there are additional attractions: almost twenty caves, many different types of birds and wildlife, pine marten and stone marten, deer, bears, wolves wild boars, wild cats and remains of prehistoric dwellings have been found.
The most attractive part of the national park (Upper and Lower lakes) have two entrances. Besides visiting it on foot along a network of wooden bridges it is possible to visit the lakes by tourist train and by boat.
There is a number of settled trails leading to the most attractive spots for panoramic views of Plitvice Lakes and the surroundings. One of them is Oštri Medvjeđak vrh (889 m) from which the view extends to Lička Plješivica, the Una and Korana valleys, and another is Tupi Medvjeđak (868 m), with an impressive view of 6 of the biggest lakes, among which Lička Plješivica and Mala Kapela. All information on trails can be obtained at the information center at the entrance.
Plitvice Lakes are open to visitors all year round. Hunting, fishing and swimming are not allowed. Accomodation is possible in a number of hotels of the national park and in the autocamp with 550 places or in the 47 bungalows. There are possibilities for private accomodation in rooms and apartments in the surrounding villages.

Aerial view - Walkaround : Senj - Croatia Hrvatska : PART 3

Senj is a town on the upper Adriatic coast in Croatia, in the foothills of the Mala Kapela and Velebit mountains. The symbol of the town is the Nehaj Fortress which was completed in 1558.

Senj is a historic walled town and the largest town between Zadar and Rijeka.

In the 16th century it became a base for the Uskoks who were Croatians driven from their homes by the Ottoman invasion. They were a feared fighting force continually provoking both the Turkish and Venetian vessels with their own pirate fleets painted black and red; the colour of death and blood.
Senj has apparently been inhabited since prehistoric times. A settlement called Athyinites in today's Senj was mentioned in Greek documents dated to 4th century BC
Senj was a thriving town in the Roman province of Dalmatia, used by the Romans as a stronghold against the Illyrians in the 2nd century BC. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Avars and the Croatians eventually settled here in the 7th century AD.
The Catholic diocese of Senj was established in 1169 and the King of Hungary gave the town to the Knights Templar in 1184.
In more recent times and in the fall of 1943, during World War II, when Fascist Italy capitulated, the Partisans took control of Senj and used it as a supply port. Subsequently, the Luftwaffe started bombarding the town. By the end of the year, they had demolished over half of the buildings in town and inflicted heavy civilian casualties.

Senj Croatian

Senj (pronounced [sɛ̂ːɲ]; Italian: Segna, Latin: Senia, Hungarian and German: Zengg) is a town on the upper Adriatic coast in Croatia, in the foothills of the Mala Kapela and Velebit mountains.

The symbol of the town is the Nehaj Fortress (Croatian: Tvrđava Nehaj) which was completed in 1558. For a time this was the seat of the Uskoks (Italian: Uscocchi), who were Christian refugees from Ottoman Bosnia resettled here to protect the Habsburg borderlands. The Republic of Venice accused the Uskoks of piracy and declared war on them which led to their expulsion following a truce in 1617.

Senj is to be found in the Lika-Senj County of Croatia, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gospić-Senj and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rijeka.

Walking Tour: Senj, Croatia - 4K UHD Virtual Travel

Senj is a town in the northern part of Croatian Adriatic coast, located in the foothills of Mala Kapela and Velebit mountains, just across the Island of Krk. This location, throughout history, provided Senj with a very good position to fight off invasions. The town's symbol is actually a defensive structure - fortress called Nehaj which served as a fortification against Ottoman invasions during the 16th and 17th centuries. Nehaj fortress provided a base for the Uskok guerilla fighters who fought off Ottomans but also engaged in occasional fights with Venice. If you'd like to find out more about Nehaj and Uskoks (Uskoci) you can take a look at my previous video about the fortress:

The town of Senj especially flourished in the 18th century after the construction of Jozefina road (named after the Habsburg Emperor Joseph II) which links the Adriatic coast via Senj and the town of Karlovac and further on to different parts of Habsburg Monarchy. The road is still in use and is known as one of the three historic roads which connect Croatian inland with the coast (the other two roads are: Karolina and Lujzijana). The road's route has been slightly altered as it acquired its modern form. If you are interested, I have filmed the entire road in Karlovac - Senj direction so you can check it out:

Aerial view - Walkaround : Fortress Nehaj - Senj - Croatia Hrvatska : PART 4

Nehaj is the name of the hill that is found above the centre of the town of Senj in Croatia. More famous is the Nehaj Fortress that stands on top of the hill. The name Nehaj comes from the Croatian term Ne hajati which means Don't care.
This name was given to the hill and the Fortress by the Uskoks, who built on the top of this hill the Fortress for defensive purposes. They gave the hill and the Fortress such a name because they wanted to emphasize to the citizens of the town of Senj, and all of those that lived in the vicinity of the town of Senj that they should not care that someone will conquer this hill or the Fortress until they are there.
