Bucharest Old Town, Romania | Things to do, places to visit & travel guide

Hi everybody. On this episode I visit Bucharest Old Town which is historical part of the capital city of Romania.

00:14 What is Bucharest?
București or Bucharest is the capital and largest city of Romania. It is described as the cultural, financial, entertainment, and media center in Romania with a significant influence in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. It is also an influence in education, tourism, research, technology, health care, art, fashion, sports, and politics in Romania.

00:54 Where is the Bucharest?
It is located in the southeast of the country, on the banks of the Dâmbovița River, less than 60 kilometers north of the Danube River and the Bulgarian border.

01:08 How to get to Bucharest?
The biggest airport in Romania and closest to Bucharest is Henri Coanda also known as Otopeni International Airport (OTP) and is located in the Northern part of the capital in the small town of Otopeni. That’s why the short name for the airport is Bucharest Otopeni. Bucharest Otopeni Airport is about 20 km away from the city centre Piata Universitatii and Old Town area. Depending on traffic rush and transportation option, the journey will take 30-60 min. There are 3 ways to get from Bucharest Airport to the city: Getting a taxi or an Uber, train or bus.

02:52 What is Bucharest famous for?
Bucharest was once known as Little Paris of the East because it was heavily influenced by French culture and architecture during the 19 to 20th centuries, much like the rest of Romania’s middle class living in the city of those times. The Parliament of Bucharest, also called the people’s house is not only the largest building in Europe, but second largest after the Penthagon.

03:39 What is there in Bucharest Old Town?
Because of influenced by French culture, when you come to Bucharest from the airport, you will most likely pass next to the Triumphal Arch. Standing out of the modern architecture, Stavropoleos Monastery Church hides inside of the Old Town of Bucharest. Beautifully restored 19th-century buildings with white stairs like a carousel is definitely one of the most stunning bookshops I have seen. Pasajul Victoriei in Bucharest's old-town boasts dozens of colorful umbrellas that transform this otherwise gritty alleyway into one of the city's unmissable spots among dedicated Instagrammers. The Linden Tree Inn is the only historic inn in Bucharest that has preserved its shape exactly as it was at its origins.

04:49 What to do in Bucharest?
Like many other European cities, the old town of Bucharest has quite a few churches. The old town of Bucharest is as mentioned, pretty small, however, there is a selection of old inns hidden in the old streets. Caru’ cu Bere is the oldest brewery in Bucharest and lies just a few steps away from the Stavropoleos Church. Cărturești Carusel has been pictured all over Instagram at the latest years or so and has been said to be one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world. The Macca Vilacrosse Passage, also located in the old Bucharest, right next to the National Bank.

06:39 What else to do around Bucharest?
From bucharest there are daily tour packages depending on your budget as group or private tours. Tour packages mostly include visiting Peles Castle, Bran Castle and Brasov Old Town. It takes 12 hours. Group tours starts from 35€ excluding entrance fees and lunch and private ones are around 250-300€ including entrance fees and lunch. Also you can visit one of the biggest Thermal Spa Complex in Europe called Therme Bucharest, which is 20 kilometers away from Bucharest.

07:59 Best time to visit Bucharest?
Weather in Bucharest is generally warm and pleasant. Like the rest of Romania, the climate is temperate-continental and all 4 seasons are still present. The best times to visit are during Spring between March and June and Autumn between September and October with averages of 15 - 25 Celsius, just perfect to enjoy the city. July-August can get pretty hot with 34 - 38 Celsius.

08:49 Is it worth visiting Bucharest?
Bucharest is worth visiting mainly if you want to have fun. Bucharest is one of the most lively cities in this part of Europe. Nightlife of this city is incredible, especially in weekends. Old Town is the center of this amazing nightlife. Except this, you can find beautiful Orthodox churches, art museums, buildings, historical inns, passages, streets and libraries to enjoy your day with photo shootings.

09:34 What to Eat in Bucharest?
So you might already have picked up on a few of the places you should definitely check out if you want to try Romanian food in Bucharest. In addition to the normal Ursus and chuck, Caru cu Bere has a lot of other interesting brews. Definitely try out some local snacks while there too. Mititei is ground beef with spices rolled up in small sausages. Manuc’s Inn, the oldest still-functioning inn and restaurant in town.

Therme Bucharest.

...
Bucharest was first mentioned in documents in 1459. It became the capital of Romania in 1862 and is the centre of Romanian media, culture, and art. Its architecture is a mix of historical (mostly Eclectic, but also Neoclassical and Art Nouveau), interbellum (Bauhaus, Art Deco and Romanian Revival architecture), socialist era and modern. In the period between the two World Wars, the city's elegant architecture and the sophistication of its elite earned Bucharest the nickname of 'Paris of the East' (Romanian: Parisul Estului) or 'Little Paris'. Although buildings and districts in the historic city centre were heavily damaged or destroyed by war, earthquakes, and even Nicolae Ceaușescu's program of systematization, many survived and have been renovated. In recent years, the city has been experiencing an economic and cultural boom. It is one of the fastest-growing high-tech cities in Europe, according to the Financial Times, CBRE, TechCrunch, and others. UiPath, a global startup founded in Bucharest, has reached over $35 billion in valuation. Since 2019, Bucharest hosts the largest high tech summit in Southeast Europe (Romania Blockchain Summit).
In 2016, the historical city centre was listed as 'endangered' by the World Monuments Watch. In 2017, Bucharest was the European city with the highest growth of tourists who stay over night, according to the Mastercard Global Index of Urban Destinations. As for the past two consecutive years, 2018 and 2019, Bucharest ranked as the European destination with the highest potential for development according to the same study.
According to the 2011 census, 1,883,425 inhabitants live within the city limits. Adding the satellite towns around the urban area, the proposed metropolitan area of Bucharest would have a population of 2.27 million people. In 2020, the government used 2.5 million people as the basis for pandemic reports. Bucharest is the fourth largest city in the European Union by population within city limits, after Berlin, Madrid, and Rome, just ahead of Paris.
Economically, Bucharest is the most prosperous city in Romania. The city has a number of large convention facilities, educational institutes, cultural venues, traditional 'shopping arcades' and recreational areas.
The Romanian name București has an unverified origin. Tradition connects the founding of Bucharest with the name of Bucur, who was a prince, an outlaw, a fisherman, a shepherd or a hunter, according to different legends. In Romanian, the word stem bucurie means 'joy' ('happiness'), and it is believed to be of Dacian origin, hence the city Bucharest means 'city of joy'.
Bucharest's crime rate is rather low in comparison to other European capital cities, with the number of total offences declining by 51% between 2000 and 2004, and by 7% between 2012 and 2013. The violent crime rate in Bucharest remains very low, with 11 murders and 983 other violent offences taking place in 2007. Although violent crimes fell by 13% in 2013 compared to 2012, 19 murders (18 of which the suspects were arrested) were recorded.
Although in the 2000s, a number of police crackdowns on organised crime gangs occurred, such as the Cămătaru clan, organised crime generally has little impact on public life. Petty crime, however, is more common, particularly in the form of pickpocketing, which occurs mainly on the city's public transport network. Confidence tricks were common in the 1990s, especially in regards to tourists, but the frequency of these incidents has since declined. However, in general, theft was reduced by 13.6% in 2013 compared to 2012. Levels of crime are higher in the southern districts of the city, particularly in Ferentari, a socially disadvantaged area.

Bucharest is the capital and largest city of Romania. This travel video features a walk tour through some of the most popular attractions and places to visit in Bucharest - see the time stamps.
The vibrant city is popular with its large and busy boulevards, remarkable architecture mixing different styles, rich historical and cultural life with the presence of many museums, churches and historical buildings. The city is dubbed Paris of the East or Little Paris. Here is also located the world's heaviest and second-largest administrative building ( after the Pentagon in USA ) - the Palace of the Parliament. You will also enjoy lively nightlife with many bars and restaurants.

One of Bucharest landmarks - Curtea Veche (Old Princeley Court)- an architectural site that used to be a palatial residence of Wallachian princes, was closed for restauration at the time of my visit - May, 2021.

Springtime in BUCHAREST, ROMANIA - Episode 2

In the second episode of “Springtime in Bucharest, Romania”, we continue our trip on Calea Victoriei (Victory Road). Leaving the Royal Palace Garden, we see across the street the equestrian statue of the former Romanian King Carol I right in the front of the Central University Library. Next to the Royal Palace, we make a stop at Crețulescu Church to see the frescoes on the porch dating from 1720 - 1722. Then, a beautiful hotel building built in 1886 in neoclassical style reminds us the sophistication of Little Paris, as Bucharest was called a century ago. We see also Bucharest Telephone Palace, Odeon Theatre and the legendary restaurant Casa Capșa, opened in 1852, the core of the political, artistic and high life in Bucharest at that time. Our trip ends in the front of the Palace of the National Military Circle, built in 1911 in French neoclassical style.
Bucharest is a city and municipality, the capital of Romania, the economic, administrative, and cultural centre of the country. It lies in the middle of the Romanian Plain, on the banks of the Dâmbovița River, a small northern tributary of the Danube.

SIBIU in ROMANIA ~ Transylvania’s “City with Eyes” a MUST Visit!

Sibiu, Romania is located in the center of the country in Transylvania. It has been nicknamed “The City with Eyes” due to the unique ventilation windows on many of the rooftops of old homes that look like eyes peering out at people down below. You might feel like you’re being watched as you walk around town! ????????

Sibiu is an absolutely gorgeous city! We loved wandering around aimlessly and finding interesting and beautiful things to see around every corner. Both the upper and lower parts of the old town are walkable and pedestrian-friendly, though the upper area of town has more to see and do.

There are several squares of various sizes in the old city center where special events are held and people gather. While we were there, a film festival and a book festival were taking place in the large and small squares.

The city has a long history with German and Hungarian influences, among others, which can be seen in the architecture, food, cultural events, and people. Sibiu has long been an important center for trade and for craftsmen. Many areas of Sibiu are well-preserved including some medieval fortifications. The old center of Sibiu is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

We’re sure no matter what time of year you visit Sibiu you won’t be disappointed. It is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Romania and was voted “Europe's 8th-most idyllic place to live” by Forbes in 2008. If you’ve only got time to visit a few places in Romania, we recommend adding Sibiu to your itinerary!

Bucharest Travel Guide | Bucharest tour Part 1| The Palace of the Parliament, Romania

The Palace of the Parliament, Romania

The Palace of the Parliament (Romanian: Palatul Parlamentului) is the seat of the Parliament of Romania. It is located on Dealul Arsenalului in the national capital city of central Bucharest (Sector 5). The Palace has a height of 84 metres (276 ft), a floor area of 365,000 square metres (3,930,000 sq ft) and a volume of 2,550,000 cubic metres (90,000,000 cu ft). The Palace of the Parliament is the heaviest building in the world, weighing about 4,098,500,000 kilograms (9.0356×109 lb).

A colossal building, designed and supervised by chief architect Anca Petrescu (1949–2013), with a team of approximately 700 architects, and constructed over a period of 13 years (1984–97), it was built as a monument for a totalitarian kitsch style of architecture, in Totalitarian and modernist Neoclassical architectural forms and styles, with socialist realism in mind.[3] The Palace was ordered by Nicolae Ceaușescu (1918–1989), the dictator of Communist Romania and the second of two longtime autocrats in power in the country since World War II,during a period in which the personality cult of political worship and adoration was in full force for him and his family.[5] Known for its ornate interior composed of 23 sections, it houses the two houses of the Parliament of Romania: the Senate (Senat) and the Chamber of Deputies (Camera Deputaților), along with three museums and an international conference center. The several museums hosted inside the Palace are the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Communist Totalitarianism (established in 2015) and the Museum of the Palace. Though originally named the House of the Republic when under its long period of construction (Romanian: Casa Republicii), after the Romanian Revolution in December 1989 it became widely known as The People's House (Romanian: Casa Poporului). Due to its impressive endowments, events organized by state institutions and international bodies such as conferences, symposia, and others take place there, but even so about 70% of the building almost four decades later still remains empty

After pet sitting for some friends in Sector 1 near Herăstrău Lake, we decided to try living in a different part of town. We moved into this Airbnb in Sector 4 near the Tineretului metro station and Tineretului Park for one month.

We chose this Airbnb because of its unique history. The building is interbellic, which means it was built between WW1 and WW2. The owners decorated it with some of their family antiques which made it an even more unique place to stay.

The apartment was spacious and comfortable. We had fun figuring out how to work the laundry machine and the gas oven! It’s all part of the experience of living in a different country and learning new things. The homeowners were very helpful throughout our stay and we couldn’t have asked for better hosts!

We loved the bustling neighborhood with its many shops, grocery stores, and restaurants. We were very close to the famous restaurant Dristor Doner Kebap, a must-try while you’re in the city.

We enjoyed walking in the two parks nearby, Parcul Tineretului and Parcul Carol. We were also within walking distance of many major attractions in the city and the old town. It was easy to take the metro anywhere in the city.

Do you like living in local neighborhoods when you travel or do you prefer to be closer to the tourist attractions? Have any questions? Let us know in the comments!

Did you know that Airbnb homeowners often offer monthly stay discounts? You can save up to 50% on some properties when you stay 30 days or more!
