what is Trier | the oldest city in Germany (sights, tour & food)

Trier is more lovely, beautiful and interesting then I expected! So I wanted to make a video covering all the important and not important things that are in Trier.

I was also surprised to find out that Trier is also the oldest city in Germany. However underrated on the list to visit, most likely because it is small.

If you would like to support & donate my silly little videos:

But I'm excited to learn more about the city and places to go/visit.

Trier, Germany - World Heritage Journeys

As one of Germany’s oldest cities, Trier was a Roman colony from the 1st century AD. It became one of the capitals of the Tetrarchy at the end of the 3rd century, when it was known as the ‘second Rome’. Its architectural achievements, like the massive Porta Nigra—the largest Roman gate north of the Alps—are reminders of its past grandeur.

Inscribed as a UNESCO site in 1986, Trier boasts one of the largest collections of preserved Roman buildings outside of Rome – an outstanding testimony to this ancient civilisation.

Trier in 5 minutes ???????? Trier is the oldest city in Germany

Trier, the oldest city in Germany. Founded more than 2000 years ago, Trier was even once the capital of the Roman Empire. The city is famous for Porta Nigra, Roman bathhouses and for its location along the Moselle River. Ready for a cool weekend trip?

Porta Nigra is the landmark of Trier. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. If you take the stairs, you'll get a panoramic view of the city of Trier. From here you can walk directly to the main market square in the old town.

Nearby is Trier Cathedral. It is the oldest church in Germany. It combines architectural styles from all epochs since the ancient world. The most important relic in the cathedral is the Holy Rock.

Passing the Palais, you come to the Imperial Baths. Today, they are only ruins left. Further out, you can look over the vineyards and the Moselle from the Petrisberg.

If you're in Trier for more than a day, it's definitely worth taking a trip into the surrounding countryside. We stayed for 2 days at the Landal Hochwald holiday park (ad) for a few relaxing days. Just let your soul relax. Hiking, biking, mini golf and delicious food. Click here for the offers from the holiday park: *

Trier (Germany) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Trier is considered to be oldest city in Germany and it has a fascinating history to match. Founded in 18 BC under the Roman Emperor Augustus, it is protected by a city wall with 5 gates. It has lived through 5 emperors and, under Constantine the Great, became the centre for the spread of Christianity north of the Alps. We will learn about all of this and more on a walking tour through the Roman streets of the city.

An important part of Roman life in Trier was a visit to the baths so the city has many different baths to choose from, both private or public, as well as the grand, monumental Imperial Baths, built into the city walls.

Next, we get a taste of the more barbaric side of Roman life at the city amphitheatre. Here, cruel battles between wild animals and gladiators were shown as a form of entertainment. Beneath the arena is a large cellar, where those sentenced to death were imprisoned alongside wild lions and tigers.

Our stroll through the old town continues on past the Petrus Tower and magnificent houses of the nobles and superiors of the church, to the cathedral square. The cathedral is marvellous and represents a period of more than 1650 years of art and architecture.

We reach the main market, the lively centre of the old town, often referred to as the most beautiful place in Germany. Here, we can admire the Franken Tower, a beautiful church and other town houses.

We round off the tour at the Black Gate, the “Porta Nigra”, the city’s largest and most powerful gate built in ancient Roman architectural style at 36 metres long, 21 metres wide and 30 metres high. This gate along with much of the beautiful city deservedly became a world cultural heritage site in 1973.

Radtour entlang der Mosel bei Schweich

driver view Viking bus ride from Trier back to Schweich after tour of Trier

This is a driver's view Viking bus ride from Trier to the small German town of Schweich which is where our Viking cruise ship was berthed during our stay in Trier during a Cities of Light river cruise. Our ship, Viking Idi, was supposed to be berthed in Trier but for some reason was not. This bus ride was on Saturday, July 27, 2019 and came after our included and interesting tour of Trier. This was essentially the bus ride back to our ship after the tour which would have been a lot shorter if the ship was docked in Trier but as a consolation we did get to see some German highways we otherwise wouldn't have seen.

Der Moselsteig: 6. u. 7. Etappe, Schweich - Leiwen

Länge: 27 km
Dauer: 8 Stunden
Schwierigkeit: mittel

The Moselle Valley: Exploring Germany's most BEAUTIFUL Region! (Mosel)

I spent three days in the Mosel / Moselle Valley in Germany, one of my favourite places in the world, and couldn't resist sharing it with the world. I am convinced that the Mosel could become a prevalent travel destination, and would therefore like to showcase some of what it has to offer. I'm really pleased with how the video turned out considering how new i am to video editing, and would love to know peoples opinions of it- especially the more experimental parts. I hope that you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it!

Please Note- This was one of my first Youtube videos, my cinematography skills have definitely improved since then!

Please subscribe to follow the adventure and like the video so that others can follow too!

driver view narrated Viking tour bus ride from Luxembourg City to Schweich (Trier), Germany (2 of 2)

This is part 2 of our ride from Luxembourg City to Schweich, Germany which is some 10 km east of Trier during our cities of Light Viking river cruise. This was the transfer ride from Paris to meet the ship for the first time and the date is Friday, July 26, 2019. We were supposed to meet the ship in Trier but some reason prevented that and that happens frequently during Viking river cruises (not a big deal or a negative). The video stops during the driveway down to where Viking Idi was actually docked.
