Puerto Rico Part 5: Dry Forest, Fort Capron, Santa Isabel & Off Grid cabin at Habitat - Pwfin
In the 5th part of our trip around the island of Puerto Rico we head to the southern coast of the island and stop at the dry forest to hike to fort Capron for beautiful views of the southern coast. Then we continued through Ponce to Santa Isabel where we were staying at an awesome off grid property called Habitat where we soak in the amazing views and play with a friendly bunch of dogs before going to sleep in our open air hut on the mountain side! #puertorico #travelvlog #offgrid

Esta represa se encuentra al lado de la PR-52 en las cercanías de la Salida 76.
Para el 1844 las fincas aledañas al Río Coamo tenían la necesidad de tener un sistema de riego. En el año 1914 culminó la construcción de la Represa con fines de mejorar la distribución de agua y de la sequía que acechaba en la zona.
Años después la Represa se a visto afectada por el crecimiento excesivo de vegetación acuática y de la rápida acumulación de sedimentos. Estos problemas han limitado el almacenamiento y calidad de agua en la región.
Gracias al sistema de riego que proviene desde el Lago Guayabal (Juana Díaz y Villalba), este ha ayudado al cultivó en esas zonas áridas y secas del sur de la isla. Sus canales de agua culminan hasta el municipio de Salinas.

Esta hermosa laguna se accede atraves de la carretera PR-153 KM 6.0 Int Barrio Felicia 2, Sector Paso Seco en la comunidad El Ojo en Santa Isabel, municipio conocido como El Pueblo de los Molinos, La Tierra de Campeones y Ciudad de los Potros.
Este lugar exactamente se encuentra entre la colindancia de 4 Barrios, estos son: Descalabrado, Jauca 2, Boca Velazquez y Felicia 2.
Esta Laguna forma parte del Río Coamo y su flujo de agua es controlado por la Represa de Santa Isabel la cuál esta localizada a un extremo de la PR-52 de dicho municipio.
El nombre de esta laguna se debe a la sobrepoblacion de las gallinas de palo que habitaban años atrás en esta área, pero debido a la autorización a la casería abierta y al consumo de esta especie por parte del gobierno, ésta a ido disminuyendo en la actualidad. También se cree que por causa de los embates del Huracán María muchas que habitaban en este lugar también perecieron.
El puente según nos informo Doña Rosa residente de la comunidad El Ojo se derrumbó a causa de unas fuertes lluvias, suceso que ocurrió muchos años antes del Huracán María, tiempo después el municipio iba a restaurar este puente con la intención de usarse de modo peatonal. Este proyecto nunca llego a concretarse debido al hurto y vandalismo de materiales para dicha construcción.

[La tierra de los campeones]
Ofrece una abundancia de belleza natural y béisbol. Conocida como La Tierra de los Campeones gracias a la rica tradición deportiva de la zona, Santa Isabel se ubica en la costa sur de Puerto Rico entre Juana Díaz y Salinas en lo que se conoce como la Costanera del Sur. El municipio es conocido por su rica belleza natural y la hospitalidad acogedora de su gente.
El municipio de Santa Isabel está localizado en la parte central de la costa sur de Puerto Rico. También son parte de su territorio las puntas: Cayito, Petrona y Águila, así como los cayos: Barbería, Cabuzazos y caracoles.
Sus colindancias son: por el sur, el Mar Caribe; por el norte, Coamo; por el oeste, Juana Díaz y por el este, Salinas. Geográficamente, Santa Isabel está situada en lo que se conoce como la Llanura Aluvial Ponceña, Patillas del Llano Costero del Sur, al sur de la Cordillera Central) y la Sierra de Cayey.
Santa Isabel es rica en agricultura y produce una gran variedad de frutas tropicales como los mangos. Pero su belleza al aire libre se extiende más allá de sus abundantes campos.
El Malecón es un paseo marítimo recreativo a lo largo de la costa que se encuentra muy cerca de restaurantes de mariscos, bares y otros negocios locales. Para una oportunidad para tomar fotos y un almuerzo relajante, este es un gran lugar para comenzar su visita.
Hay una variedad de islas más pequeñas frente a la costa que forman parte de la Reserva Natural Punta Petrona y son accesibles en barco. También hay un puñado de cayos e islotes cerca de la reserva, incluidos los cayos Caracoles, Cabezazos y Alfeñique. Más cerca de tierra, Isla Puerca está cerca de las playas de Jauca y Clavellina. Ambas son playas menos concurridas, especialmente durante la semana. La playa Cortada y la playa de Santa Isabel son opciones populares y hermosas en la zona.
En la comunidad vecina de Guayama, el Bosque Estatal de Aguirre (Bosque Estatal de Aguirre) ofrece oportunidades para caminatas por la naturaleza, recorridos ecológicos y más en medio de hermosos manglares que brindan hábitat a una variedad de fauna local.
Durante la época precolombina, la zona fue habitada por sociedades indígenas. La buena calidad del terreno, la abundancia de manantiales, las corrientes de agua y el fácil acceso al mar fueron los factores que llamaron la atención de estos aborígenes. Por esas razones, el área es conocida por sus ricos yacimientos arqueológicos. De hecho, en esta zona se encontró el cemí más grande hallado en Puerto Rico.
El área que hoy se conoce como Santa Isabel formó parte de la tercera ciudad permanente fundada por los españoles, la Villa de San Blás e Illesca, en Coamo. De hecho, Coamo Abajo fue el nombre distintivo de lo que posteriormente sería Santa Isabel. El 19 de noviembre de 1841, Santiago Méndez Vigo, Gobernador y Capitán General de Puerto Rico, sucedió la fundación del pueblo. Sin embargo, es el 5 de octubre de 1842 la fecha, que por tradición, se celebra para el aniversario de la fundación del pueblo.

Today we are traveling to the south part of Puerto Rico to explore Finca Don Manuel. Located in the town of Santa Isabel this farm is 320 acres big and it also has wind mills that can catch your eyes as you are arriving to the town of Santa Isabel. Finca Don Manuel offers a beautiful and educational tour for locals and tourist. I’m this tour you can be able to learn about everything they harvest (pineapple, banana, plantain, pumpkin and lemon) and how the farm works and it functions. Also you will be having a feast because you will be able to have a taste of what they harvest in the farm and also you can include a delicious local dish at the end of the tour.
