Omkareshwar (ॐकारेश्वर) Jyotirlinga (Om Namah Shivaya) is situated at bank of Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh and is around 80 Km from indore. Omkareshwar is home to Shri omkar mandhata temple, situated on the mandhata island which encloses one of the 12 jyotirlingas. There is parikrma of 7 km during which you see many historical temples and sangam. In this video, I have given all the details about the omkareshwar temple, places to visit in Omkareshwar, temples in omkareshwar, how to reach omkareshwar, and omkareshwar parikrima. There are few options to reach omkareshwar; you can reach Indore and from their take a bus for Omkareshwar which takes 3 hours and ticket is Rs. 150. If you are in Ujjain, you can directly visit Omkareshwar from Ujjain by taking a bus which will take 5 hours and it will cost Rs. 220. In Omkareshwar, you can do parikrma of parvat, visit to omkareshwar temple, visit to mamleshwar temple, you can enjoy boating, have a view of dam. There are many ancient temples during parikrma which you will se.

Today on Day 3 we are leaving Ujjain for Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, which is around 140 km. away from here, it will take around 3.30 hrs. to reach there.
After a quick breakfast we started our journey at around 10.30am in the morning, we reached Omkareshwar by around 2.30 pm we finished our lunch on the way. we directly stopped at Shri Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan's Bhakta Niwas in Omkareshwar, here you can find nice & clean rooms at very affordable rates. You can't book your room here by phone or by online as they only allocate rooms on a first come first serve basis. When we reach no rooms are available at that time, but they told us to wait for some time & within 10-15 mins we got our room. I highly recommend this place as management here is absolutely outstanding in all manners. The entire complex itself gives you a positive vibration, they also serve pure veg. the food at a very reasonable cost.
We quickly drop our bags in the room & after having short rest we proceed to Darshan of Mamleshwar & Omkareshwar.
Omkareshwar is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. on an island, shaped like the holiest of Hindu symbols 'Om'. Omkareshwar Temple is situated on the mountain called Mandhata aka Shivpuri by the banks of River Narmada. The temple is one of the 12 Major Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in India and is closely linked with the Mamleshwar Temple which is situated on the southern end of the Narmada River. It is said that both Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar are two halves of the same ancient Linga that Lord Shiva had himself created and then divided into two.
Mamleshwar is Just 5 Mins walking from Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan, we quickly reach there and took blessings of Lord Shiva, after walking further we reached the bank of Narmada river, this place is also known as Gaumukh Ghat, from here you can get boats for opposite bank of a river where Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is situated. apart from a boat, there are two bridges that are also there if you want to cross the river.
We plan to go there by boat & returned by a bridge, for the boat ride they charge around 100 to 150 per person, during the boat ride they take you on a long ride and show some places nearby this ride is approx 30 mins long.
The boat dropped us on Island Mandhata where Omkareshwar is located, once you reach there some people try to approach you for shiva Abhishek or direct darshan in the temple, we just Ignored them and proceed further, there is not much rush here, so we took darshan very easily & without any hustle.
According to legend, Narad Muni once visited the Vindhya parvat and told him that the Meru parvat was larger. This made Vindhya parvat jealous. Out of determination to be taller than Meru, Vindhya parvat began praying to Lord Shiva to bless him and make him taller. As a result, Lord Shiva was pleased and blessed him with his desired boon. on a request from all the gods, Lord Shiva divided the linga into two parts, one in Omkareshwar and the other in Mamleshwar.
We also performed a small Abhishek here, after that we crossed the river by one of the bridges ( New Suspension Bridge) and reached Bhakta Niwas by around 7.30pm. As we reach the dinner was just about to start, so we planned to take dinner there only. the dinner was very nice & Healthy.

By Air:
The nearest airport, Indore - 77 km from the shrine, is connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal, and Gwalior with regular flights.
By Train:
The nearest railhead is Omkareshwar Road on the Ratlam-Khandwa section of the Western Railways.
By Road:
Omkareshwar is connected to Indore, Ujjain, Khandwa, and Omkareshwar Road by regular bus services including Volvo buses and private buses.
Next-Day we have a plan to visit Maheshwar & Mandu another historic place of MP, but before starting we have planned to visit the Dam site which is near Bhakta Niwas. this is also a worth visit place, you can get a nice panoramic view of the dam & Temple as well.

At a distance of 1 km from Omkareshwar Bus Station, Omkareshwar Temple is a revered Hindu temple located in the Omkareshwar town of Madhya Pradesh. Perched on an enticing island of Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada river, it is one of the holiest temples in India, and among the must include places in Omkareshwar tour packages.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 revered jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva in India. According to legend, Vindhya, the deity controlling the Vindhyachal mountain ranges was worshipping Lord Shiva to cleanse his soul of the sins committed by him. He created a sacred Lingam with sand and clay. Impressed by his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before him in two forms- Omkareshwar and Amareshwar. The island is said to be in the shape of the Hindu 'OM' symbol which makes this land even more divine.
The temple boasts Nagara-style architecture with detailed and intricate carvings. This 5 storied temple has a grand Sabha Mandap (prayer hall) standing on about 60 huge elaborately carved pillars. One can see the Mahakal temple on the first floor, Omkareshwar Temple on the second floor, Siddhnatha temple on the 3rd floor, Gupteswar temple on the 4th floor, and Rajeshwar Mahadev temple on the 5th floor. All these temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva and these are different names of Lord Shiva. Inside, the Omkar Shivlinga is established along with Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesh. Jyotirlinga is always surrounded by water. Besides, the circular path around Omkar hill (Parikrama path) has several temples and ashrams. The path is about 6 km long and takes 2-3 hours to complete.
There are three regular 'Pujas' in the temple. The morning one is done by the temple trust, the middle one by the priest of Scindia state, and the evening one by the priest of the Holkar state. During holidays and Shravan month, there will be a huge crowd in the temple. Maha Shivratri is one of the main and important festivals celebrated here with great enthusiasm. One can reach the temple via the long bridge across Narmada or by boat.

Most of the visitors consider both the temples as equally sacred jyotirlinga and visit them. (as these temples are not far away.).
On completion of pilgrimage all the Hindus come to Omkareshwar and offer the holy water to Omkareshwar only then there visit to other pilgrimage is considered to be complete.

About Omkareshwar:
Omkareshwar is fourth out of 12 Jyotirlings of lord Shiva according to ancient Hindu epics. It is situated in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh state. It is on an island called Mandhata in the Narmada river. It is about 80 Kms from Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The shape of the island is said to be like the Hindu Om symbol. Omkareshwar is formed by the sacred river Narmada. This is one of the most sacred of rivers in India and is now home to one of the world's biggest dam projects.
Omkareshwar (Hindi: ओंकारेश्वर Ōṃkārēśvar) is a Hindu temple dedicated to God Shiva. It is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. It is on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada river; the shape of the island is said to be like the Hindu ॐ symbol. There are two temples here, one to Omkareshwar (whose name means Lord of Omkaara or the Lord of the Om Sound) and one to Amareshwar (whose name means Immortal lord or lord of the Immortals or Devas). But as per the sloka on dwadash jyotirligam, Mamleshwar is the jyotirling, which is on other side of Narmada river.

As per Shiv Mahapuran, once Brahma (the Hindu God of creation) and Vishnu (the Hindu God of Protection and Care) had an argument in terms of supremacy of creation. To test them, Shiva pierced the three worlds as a huge endless pillar of light, the jyotirlinga. Vishnu and Brahma split their ways to downwards and upwards respectively to find the end of the light in either directions. Brahma lied that he found out the end, while Vishnu conceded his defeat. Shiva appeared as a second pillar of light and cursed Brahma that he would have no place in ceremonies while Vishnu would be worshipped till the end of eternity. The jyotirlinga is the supreme partless reality, out of which Shiva partly appears. The jyothirlinga shrines, thus are places where Shiva appeared as a fiery column of light. Originally there were believed to be 64 jyothirlingas while 12 of them are considered to be very auspicious and holy. Each of the twelve jyothirlinga sites take the name of the presiding deity - each considered different manifestation of Shiva. At all these sites, the primary image is lingam representing the beginningless and endless Stambha pillar, symbolizing the infinite nature of Shiva.The twelve jyothirlingas are Somnath in Gujarat, Mallikarjuna at Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh, Mahakaleswar at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Kedarnath in Himalayas, Bhimashankar in Maharashtra, Viswanath at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Triambakeshwar near Nashik in Maharashtra, Vaidyanath at Deogarh in Jharkhand, Nageswar at Dwarka in Gujarat, Rameshwar at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and Grishneshwar near Aurangabad, Maharashtra in Maharashtra.Wikipedia
