Hiking San Jacinto from the Palm Springs Tram

San Jacinto is one of the most approachable of the 10,000-foot peaks in Southern California. I always enjoy taking the tram up from the desert to do this 12-mile round trip hike, but don't underestimate it as the elevation is still large so you will be feeling its effects. Once you get to the summit though you get to see amazing views all the way down to the desert floor and it is a pretty amazing experience.

Texas Revolution: Exploring Large Granite Markers at San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site

After driving through miles of surrounding petroleum plants, visitors to San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site encounter the welcoming beacon of Texas independence, represented by a remarkable 570-foot-tall monument.

The 1,200-acre site preserves and interprets the legendary battleground where Texians defeated the Mexican Army in an 18-minute battle on April 21, 1836.

Our State Historic Sites are cuurently closed to the public. We look forward to reopening and restoring programming as soon as we can ensure the safety of our visitors.

Have you ever wondered about the large granite markers at the site? Learn all about them in this virtual tour of the San Jacinto Battleground.

As an alternative to visiting a historic site, we are providing free online education resources about Texas history, preservation, and heritage tourism.

Go to thc.texas.gov/historyathome to view resources for students, teachers, and history-lovers to engage with the people, places, and stories of the Lone Star State.

Making the Monument at San Jacinto

Building the San Jacinto Monument took Texas ingenuity—in fact, the work was so innovative that it was recognized as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Hear how the engineers overcame the battleground's wet clay soil, how the 35-foot-tall star got on top, and how the terraces were used for some sleight-of-hand regarding the Washington Monument.

More about the THC’s San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site:

San Jacinto Monument

Recorded June 5, 2004. The San Jacinto Monument is a 570-foot high column located in Harris County, Texas, near the city of La Porte. It is topped with a 220-ton star that commemorates the site of the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. The monument, dedicated on April 21, 1939, is the world's tallest monument tower and is part of the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site, located along the Houston Ship Channel. The column is an octagonal shaft faced with Texas Cordova shellstone, topped with a 34-foot Lone Star - the symbol of Texas. Also located at the historical site is the Battleship Texas.
