Before going to Japan here is the Japan travel restrictions update Feb 2023:

Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost prefecture, is famous for beautiful wilderness, abundant powder snow, delicious seafood, and popular destination for skiing and snowboarding in winter. Even if you are not skiing or snowboarding, there are still so much things to do, places to visit in Hokkaido region. We recommend 1 or 2 nights in Hakodate and here is all things to do, food you must try, places to visit for your travel itinerary to Hakodate:

1) Eat Chinese Fried Chicken Burger from Lucky Pierott
Do not underestimate this clown burger chain that only can be found in Hakodate because their Chinese fried chicken burger is actually very juicy. We did not expect burger in a small Japanese city in Hokkaido can be delicious but it was quite yummy indeed!

2) Ride the ropeway up to Mt Hakodate to see beautiful city from above. We recommend to start going up during sunset

3) Trying food that is unique or only can be found in Hokkaido
7-Eleven hot food snack, only in Hokkaido region - Saku Saku Roll (Japanese fish cake)

4) Must try freshest seafood at Hakodate Morning Market
Kaisendon bowl is a rice topped with fresh raw seafood like ikura (salmon roe), uni (sea urchin), shrimp, crab, sasihimi etc. Also, don't forget to try squid & snow crab bun from Kaniman Chaya.
Hokkaido is blessed with freshest seafood you will ever taste and there are so many types of crabs: King Crab, Hairy Crab, Hanasaki Crab that are super fresh and so sweet. In Hakodate Morning Market, you can also buy some fruits to try like strawberry and melon. Hokkaido's melon is a MUST try fruit!

5) Shopping and sightseeing at Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse
Commercial warehouse with lots of Japanese craft shops, perfect for shopping. Of course there are some food stalls, dessert and cafe like Starbucks in Hakodate Bay.

6) Eating dessert at a traditional tea shop built in 1900s
Kikuizumi Cafe was built in early 1900 and still maintain the old Japanese traditional house architecture that is now open as tea shop or cafe. Try the tofu shiratama parfait while mesmerizing irori - a sunken hearth in Japanese traditional houses that is rare to see.

7) Must try food: Miso Ramen in Hakodate
Hakodate is the birthplace of miso ramen so obviously you need to try miso ramen while visiting Hakodate. We tried Menchuubo Ajisai near the Goryokaku Tower.

8) Visit Goryokaku Tower and Goryokaku Park
The view of Hakodate from Goryokaku Tower is truly magical especially during winter with winter illumination lights, they are just magnificent.

Our adventure in Otaru, a charming port city on the northern island of Hokkaido, Japan, was a whirlwind of cultural experiences and culinary delights, packed into a single day. With only 24 hours to immerse ourselves in the beauty and uniqueness of Otaru before boarding a ferry to continue our exploration of Japan, we aimed to experience as much as possible.

This episode of our travel series focuses on Otaru's most famous attractions, blending historical insights with local flavors. Our journey began at the Beef Cutlet Otaru Kurosawa, a renowned local eatery where we indulged in sumptuous beef cutlets, a perfect blend of crispy breading and tender, flavorful meat, a true testament to the culinary craftsmanship of Otaru.

As we wandered through Otaru’s historic Warehouse District, we were mesmerized by the quaint charm of the old buildings, now repurposed into chic boutiques and glass shops. These shops are famous for their intricate glassware, a specialty of Otaru.

A highlight of our visit was the Otaru Beer brewery, an establishment that prides itself on brewing beer using traditional German techniques. The distinct flavors of their beers, ranging from classic pilsners to rich stouts, provided a delightful contrast to the more familiar Japanese beer brands.

A boat cruise along the Otaru Canal offered a different perspective of the city. The serene waterway, lined with old warehouses and lit by gas lamps, exuded a nostalgic charm. This peaceful cruise allowed us to appreciate the slower pace of life in Otaru, a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Tokyo.

The Plumhouse Guesthouse, where we briefly stayed, was a cozy and welcoming place that offered insight into traditional Japanese hospitality. The guesthouse, with its warm wooden interiors and comfortable tatami rooms, provided a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle.

One of the most enchanting stops was the Otaru Steamwhistle Clock, a unique timepiece that combines functionality with artistry. This clock is not just a way to tell time; it's a symbol of Otaru's industrial past, blending seamlessly with the city's modern rhythm.

Our visit to the Otaru Music Box Museum was a journey into a world of whimsy and nostalgia. The museum, with its extensive collection of intricately designed music boxes, some dating back to the 19th century, showcased the city's artistic heritage. The tinkling melodies of the music boxes created an atmosphere of enchantment, transporting us back in time.

An evening visit to the Kitaichi Hall Gas Lamp Cafe was like stepping into another era. The hall, lit solely by petroleum lamps, offered an ambient setting reminiscent of the early 20th century. The warm glow of the lamps, combined with the aroma of fresh coffee, created an unforgettable sensory experience.

Our culinary journey continued with a sake tasting session. Sampling various types of sake, each with its unique flavor profile, we gained a deeper appreciation for this traditional Japanese beverage. The local brewers' passion for sake making, along with their commitment to quality, was evident in every sip.

As our day in Otaru came to a close, we reflected on our experiences in this enchanting city. From the delicious local cuisine and the historical sites to the warm hospitality of its people, Otaru left an indelible mark on our hearts. Our final thoughts on this quaint port city were filled with gratitude for the rich cultural tapestry we had the opportunity to experience, even if just for 24 hours.

10 Things to do in Nakano: Tokyo's Cheap Budget District

These are my carefully selected 10 top things to do in Nakano, the secret budget district of Tokyo. I included gems like Koala March pastries, Daily Chico, Namco Arcade, Horumon Yakiniku and where to get a FREE Gyoza dinner to complete an epic afternoon in Tokyo. Subscribe to my channel ► for weekly videos!

???? 7-Day Tokyo Pocket Itinerary:

(exclusive Tokyo discount offers)

($215 USD, 10% discount)
➜ Your ticket to exploring Japan efficiently!

Tokyo is overrun by tourism, luckily for you there is an alternative nobody is talking about yet. The Nakano district is just 5 minutes west by train from Shinjuku and a hidden gem in Tokyo. Nakano is famous for being the oldskool Anime, Manga & Gaming mecca compared to the hugely popular Akihabara electronic town district plus is it extremely cozy and welcoming compared to obvious tourist hot spots of Tokyo.

Download my FREE map of Nakano:

Nakano is especially great to visit during a rainy day in Tokyo since Nakano's primary shopping street and the Nakano Broadway complex, which houses 250 stores, are all indoor. Nakano Broadway includes super fun places, super cheap Japanese snack shops, plenty of arcades and comic book stores to keep you entertained throughout the day.

Whoever says Tokyo is expensive is an amateur traveler and is just doing it wrong. Most travelers go to Shinjuku, Shibuya & Ginza which are quite expense. Together with my friends Heather, Kelly and Bobby we enjoyed an incredibly cheap evening food adventures in Nakano.

Start your adventure in Nakano by walking through the Sun Mall shopping street until you end up at the Nakano Broadway complex where you can browse through at least 30 Mandarake store. Mandarake is THE pre-owned comic book dealer of Tokyo since 1987. Every Mandarake store has a different theme. For the most unique Mandarake store head to the 3rd floor where you can enter a special shrine that sells vintage tin toys.

The best part of the Nakano Broadway complex is the basement. Here you'll find gigantic cheap grocery stores with incredible products ranging from household items to dirt cheap fish and delicious sushi pre-made meals.

Near the back of the basement you'll find the Daily Chico soft-serve ice cream store that sell this ridiculous 8 flavors, 40-centimeter-tall soft-serve ice cream cone which makes for hilarious selfies and sells for 480 YEN, $4 USD!

In the evening I recommend you explore the extreme cozy back alleys on the east side of the Sun Mall shopping street. This area houses plenty of sake bars, karaoke shops and izakaya’s (Japanese drinking spots) but above all wagyu beef and steak houses. Wagyu is expensive fat marbled beef that will melt on the tip of your tongue. After some digging I found that Horumon Yakiniku offers the best bang for your buck. Their wagyu beef was mouth-watering delicious.

Another place to visit is Terrie's Dog Cafe. Entrance is FREE but does require you purchase a plain tea or coffee with rates starting at only 300 YEN, $2.80 USD. Terrie's Dog Cafe is a shelter for rescue dogs so please do the right thing and support these poor little cuties.

My favorite part of Nakano is the atmosphere, it is cozy, friendly and fun, especially on a rainy day. With the massive amounts of indoor shops there is something to do for everyone. Do not hesitate and make the 5-minute train journey just west of Shinjuku main station.

In conclusion, Nakano is the definition of a cheap day in Tokyo. Especially for travelers on a serious budget. Do not pay tourist prices in the obvious tourist districts of Tokyo. Head out of the tourist comfort zone and explore the lesser known areas. You won't be disappointed!

Best Kyoto Sake & Food Tour | Fushimi District Best Sake In Japan

Want to experience a rock star tour of the world's greatest sake district? This is hands down the best food & drink tour we've ever done.

Kyoto is the historic capital of Japan -- The name 'Kyoto' literally translates to 'Capital City and this charming slice of old-school Japan offers a stunning range of cultural heirlooms and tasty traditions. The most notable of these traditions is arguably the craft of sake brewing; the bountiful underground springs in the precinct contain some of the purest waters on the planet, and the Japanese wasted no time in transforming this natural gift into the wondrous elixir known around the world as Sake. On this tour, you'll have a chance to sample around 25 different sakes while learning about the historic Fushimi district of Kyoto. You'll tour a 400-year-old brewery and dine at a traditional Japanese restaurant -- it doesn't get any more authentic or memorable than this.
