There are not many tourists who know about the historical town of Kurashiki on the outskirts of Okayama. I was very fortunate to find out about this area when I was passing through and I would highly recommend you visit here if you enjoy the more traditional side of Japanese culture. It is very easy to get to if you are already staying in Okayama or there is also the option of staying right in Kurashiki with many beautiful ryokans. Takamatsu is a port city on Japan’s Shikoku Island. It’s known for the sprawling Ritsurin Garden, with a teahouse, koi ponds, landscaped hills and pine forests.

【Korakuen Garden】was created roughly 300 years ago by the area’s daimyo (domain lord). A symbol of the power of the samurai, Okayama Korakuen Garden is considered one of the three great gardens of Japan alongside Kanazawa City’s Kenroku-en and Mito City’s Kairakuen.
【Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter】This townscape, known for the characteristically Japanese white walls of its residences and the willow trees lining the banks of the Kurashiki River, has earned recognition as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Kurashiki prospered in the 1600s as an integral destination for the transportation of goods, and the area continues to offer a historically attractive atmosphere of a calm and harmonious life.

Trivia: There were so many spots that I saw on TV here in Kurashiki Bikan Historic Area. It's certainly a huge area and I'm sure you will like it. However it's a shame that many people go home quickly and don't stay at night. I was one of them too before. But for the first time I stayed in a hotel nearby and walked in this area at night without tourists. WOW! The night view was very sexy! I shot another video at night here, so please stay tuned!

Today we spend the day in the beautiful city of Kurashiki, Okayama! We eat blue food on Denim Street, take a traditional boat tour along the canal, and explore the Bikan Historical Quarter. Kurashiki is our favourite city in the Okayama prefecture, and I'm pretty sure you will be able to see why!

In today's Japan Walking Tour series, join me on a sunset walk at Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter in Okayama!
Kurashiki (倉敷) is located in Okayama Prefecture, not far from the capital city of Okayama.
Kurashiki has a preserved canal area dating back to the Edo period (1603-1867), when the city served as an important rice distribution center. In fact, the name Kurashiki can roughly translate as the town of warehouses for rice warehouses.
Many of Kurashiki's former warehouses have been converted into museums, shops and cafes. Ohara Museum is the most impressive of Kurashiki's museums, displaying a large collection of works by famous Western artists.
This canal area is a 10-minute walk from Kurashiki Station. You can enjoy a nice peaceful walk and feel like you are in historical Japan.
