What are the 10 prettiest towns in the county of Essex? To determine this, I visited them all. Here's what I found out.

As a disclaimer, this list is neither a social commentary, nor a guide on which are the nicest towns to live, but purely a judgement on the aesthetics of each respective town centre.

Great British Market Towns- Saffron Walden 4K

Saffron Walden is a delightful medieval market town located in north-west Essex. Many wonderful independent shops and cafes nestle amongst a wealth of beautiful historic buildings. Archaeological evidence suggests continuous settlement on or near the site of Saffron Walden from at least the Neolithic period. It is believed that a small Romano-British settlement and fort – possibly in the area round Abbey Lane – existed as an outpost of the much larger settlement of Cestreforda to the north.

Saffron Walden Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Essex, and around 12 miles south, and slightly east, of Cambridge is the town of Saffron Walden.

Originally the town's name was, simply, Walden - deriving from Old English for 'valley of the Britons'. In 1141, during the reign of King Stephen, a market charter was granted to Walden. Around this same period, a castle was built here. Its construction was ordered by Geoffrey de Mandeville II, 1st Earl of Essex, and was part of a series of castles built to reinforce his power in the region in the face of the civil war known as The Anarchy. This was fought between the supporters of King Stephen and those of Empress Matilda - Stephen's cousin and rival claimant to the throne. The castle is believed to have been slighted by orders of Henry II in the 1150s in the aftermath of the civil war.

By 1328 the town had become known as Chipping Walden, with the 'chipping' prefix deriving from an Old English word for market, as seen in Chipping Norton, Chipping Ongar etc. The 'saffron' prefix dates from the Tudor period, and was formalised in 1514 in a charter granted by Henry VIII. It was around this time that the saffron crocus was grown in the area and the saffron trade was at its peak.

At the heart of the town is St Mary's Church. This dates back to the 13th century, although the nave and tower were rebuilt in the 15th century. It is the largest parish church in Essex. Other notable buildings in the town include the Cross Keys Hotel from the Elizabethan era (first seen just after the 10-minute mark), and the Old Sun Inn dating back to the 14th century, renowned for its pargeting, i.e. external decorative plasterwork (seen just after the 15-minute mark).

In 1865 a railway station opened in Saffron Walden. This formed part of Saffron Walden Railway, which was a branch line between Audley End and Bartlow. The line connected the West Anglia Main Line from London to Cambridge with the Stour Valley Line from Marks Tey to Shelford (which has since been axed north of Sudbury). The station closed in 1964 as part of the Beeching Cuts - a controversial move to promote road travel by closing over 2,000 stations across Britain. The nearest station today is Audley End. Signage at the station displays it as 'Audley End for Saffron Walden', as the town centre is two miles away, so walking from there is an option. Alternatively there are regular buses from not only the station, but also nearby settlements including Cambridge, Haverhill and Thaxted among others.

Medieval Saffron Walden, Essex, England 2022 | Best Medieval market town (with captions)

Turn on the caption guide and enjoy this Saffron Walden, Essex, England 2022 walking tour.
Saffron Walden is a picturesque, medieval town, in north-west Essex, 15 miles south of Cambridge.
If you're thinking of visiting or moving to Saffron walden you'll find many interesting historic buildings reflecting its wealth as a rural market town.

At the heart lies St Mary’s Church, the largest parish church in Essex. Fine examples of elaborate moulded plasterwork (pargetting), can be seen on the Old Sun Inn and the houses in Castle Street & Bridge Street. Also of note are the Eight Bells, the timber-framed Cross Keys, and the medieval building located at 1 Myddylton Place.

Saffron Walden Museum's collections are housed in one of the oldest purpose-built museum buildings in the country, completed in 1835. It includes mammoth tusks and mummies, an early Tudor bed and a natural history museum gallery. In the grounds of the museum are the ruins of the Castle Keep which dates back to the 1130s.

Bridge End Garden is on the north side of Saffron Walden. Careful restoration has replicated gardening techniques and designs typical of the Victorian era and brought the garden back to its full splendour. The wonderful hedge maze is of particular appeal to children. The path into the garden passes the Fry Art Gallery which houses a collection of works by a Great Bardfield group of artists who settled in the Essex countryside in the 1930s.

The attractive Common is the oldest of Saffron Walden’s open spaces and on its eastern side is the largest turf labyrinth still surviving in Europe. Children of all ages enjoy following the ‘path’ through the turf, which winds for about one mile within a circle 100 feet (30.5 meters) in diameter.

Places to see in ( Saffron Walden - UK )

Saffron Walden is a market town in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. Saffron Walden is 12 miles north of Bishop's Stortford, 18 miles south of Cambridge and 43 miles north of London. The town retains a rural appearance and some buildings dating from the medieval period.

Saffron Walden was at the centre of the Eastern Association during the English Civil War. While the town was the headquarters of the New Model Army, Lieutenant-General of Horse, Oliver Cromwell paid a 19-day visit in May 1647, taking part in debates to seek a settlement between Parliament and the army. Saffron Walden's unofficial coat of arms showed the saffron crocus within the walls of the castle in the form of an heraldic pun – as in, Saffron walled-in. In 1961, a formal coat of arms was granted by the College of Arms and this was adapted in 1974 into its current form.

The 12th-century Walden Castle, built or expanded by Geoffrey de Mandeville, the first Earl of Essex is in ruins. After the medieval period, the castle fell into disuse and much of the flint was taken and used in the construction of local houses and the wall surrounding the Audley End estate. All that remains is the ruined basement.

Near to the castle is a turf maze, a series of circular excavations cut into the turf of the common. It is the largest example of this style of maze in England, the main part is about 100 feet (30 m) in diameter. The earliest record of it dates from 1699, although its origin may be earlier. It has been extensively restored several times, most recently in 1979.

Saffron Walden is served by Audley End railway station, which is located 2 miles (3 km) outside the town in the village of Wendens Ambo, with regular bus services to the town centre. The station is on the West Anglia mainline service between Cambridge and London Liverpool Street Station, with an off-peak service of two trains an hour, southbound and northbound, and more services during peak times. Saffron Walden is accessed from junction 8 of the M11 travelling from London (a distance of about 15 miles (24 km)) and from junction 10 travelling from the Cambridge direction (8 miles (13 km)). Stansted Airport is some 15 miles (24 km) from the town, while Luton Airport is 43 miles (69 km) away.
