Rügen is Germany's largest island by area.
It is located off the Pomeranian coast in the Baltic Sea and belongs to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The gateway to Rügen island is the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, where it is linked to the mainland by road and railway via the Rügen Bridge and Causeway, two routes crossing the two-kilometre-wide Strelasund, a sound of the Baltic Sea.
Rügen has a maximum length of 51.4 km (from north to south), a maximum width of 42.8 km in the south and an area of 926 km².
The coast is characterized by numerous sandy beaches, lagoons (Bodden) and open bays (Wieke), as well as projecting peninsulas and headlands.
In June 2011, UNESCO awarded the status of a World Heritage Site to the Jasmund National Park, famous for its vast stands of beeches and chalk cliffs like King's Chair, the main landmark of Rügen island.
The island of Rügen is part of the district of Vorpommern-Rügen, with its county seat in Stralsund.
The towns on Rügen are: Bergen, Sassnitz, Putbus and Garz.
In addition, there are the Baltic seaside resorts of Binz, Baabe, Göhren, Sellin and Thiessow.
Rügen is very popular as a tourist destination because of its resort architecture, the diverse landscape and its long, sandy beaches.
The island receives about one quarter of all overnight stays in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Most visitors come to Rügen between April and October, the peak season being from June to August, but its quiet atmosphere in winter is also appreciated.
The island offers a huge variety of different beach and shore areas.
Rügen is often visited by windsurfers and kitesurfers and offers more than fifteen different locations for surfing.
The most popular locations are Dranske, Rosengarten, Wiek, Suhrendorf and Neu Mukran.
On the peninsula of Jasmund is the Jasmund National Park, which consists of the beech forest of Stubnitz, including the famous chalk cliffs of Rügen.
On the Königsstuhl itself is the Königsstuhl National Park Centre, which has a multivision cinema and audio-guide exhibitions with information about the national park in several languages.

For Germans this Island is very well known for its beaches and spa like atmosphere. Especially the chalk cliffs are famous. I did a roadtrip and visited a friend on Ruegen and had to realize again, that my home country has also really nice places to visit...if the weather is good:) See places like Sassnitz, Binz, Sellin, Proras. But the east coast has even more interesting places like Strahlsund, Lübeck, Fehmarn or Timmendorfer Beach. Enjoy the film.

Sassnitz is a town on the Jasmund peninsula, Rügen Island, in the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The population as of 2012 was 9,498.
It is a well-known seaside resort and port town, and is a gateway to the nearby Jasmund National Park with its unique chalk cliffs. The decommissioned British submarine HMS Otus was purchased by a German entrepreneur and towed to Sassnitz to be a floating museum. The Sassnitz area is most popular for its famous chalk rocks (Kreidefelsen), which inspired artists like Caspar David Friedrich.
Most beautiful hike on RÜGEN | From Sassnitz to the Königsstuhl | Germany
Welcome to Jasmund National Park on the German Baltic Sea Island of Rügen. The Jasmund National Park is located on the east coast of the island of Ruegen and enchants with beautiful beech forests, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and fantastic steep coast and chalk cliffs.
In this video I take you on a hike from Sassnitz along the coast over the Pirate Gorge, the Kieler Bach descent to the Victoria Blick, the best view of King’s Chair or Koenigsstuhl in German, the largest chalk cliff on the steep coast.
We start in Sassnitz through the beautiful beech forest. The hike there and back takes about 4 hours in total and is 16 km long. On the way I filmed the most beautiful views of the wonderful steep coast of Ruegen for you. At the end I'll show you what the cliffs and the Koenigsstuhl look like from the water. So be sure to watch the video to the end so you don't miss anything, help the channel grow and enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Jasmund National Park.

Willkommen im Nationalpark Jasmund auf der deutschen Ostsee Insel Rügen. Der Nationalpark Jasmund befindet sich and Ostküste der Insel Rügen und bezaubert durch wunderschöne Buchenwälder, die zum Unesco Welterbe gehören, und traumhafte Steilküsten und Kreidefelsen.
In diesem Video nehme ich euch mit auf eine Wanderung von Sassnitz an der Küste entlang über die Piratenschlucht, den Abstieg Kieler Bach bis zur Victoria Sicht, der besten Sicht auf Königsstuhl dem größten Kreidefelsen an der Steilküste.
Los geht’s in Sassnitz durch den wunderschönen Buchenwald. Die Wanderung hin und zurück dauert insgesamt ca. 4 Stunden und beträgt 16 km. Unterwegs habe ich für euch die schönsten Aussichten auf die wunderschöne Steilküste Rügens gefilmt. Am Ende zeige ich euch noch wie die Steilküste und der Königsstuhl vom Wasser aus aussehen. Also schaut das Video unbedingt bis zum Ende, so verpasst ihr nichts, hilft dem Kanal zuwachsen und genießt dabei die wunderschönen Landschaften des Nationalparks Jasmund.

Rundgang durch Sassnitz auf Rügen / A sightseeing tour through Sassnitz on Rügen Island
Sassnitz war das erste anerkannte Seeheilbad der Insel Rügen. Durch das
Kreidevorkommen war es jahrhundertelang Seebad und Kurort, welches durch die Industriealisierung zerstört wurde.
Auch die Fischerei hat hier eine lange Tradition, die bis heute erhalten geblieben ist. In den Nachkriegsjahren - der größten Blüte der Sassnitzer Fischerei - gehörten etwa 200 hochseefähige Fischkutter zu diesem Betrieb.
Heute starten von Sassnitz aus die Fahrgastschiffe entlang der Kreideküste sowie
vom größten deutschen Eisenbahnfährhafen zahlreiche Personen- und Containerschiffe.
Die schnellste Verbindung zwischen Deutschland und Schweden ist die Nutzung eines Fährschiffes der StenaLine nach Trelleborg, die Überfahrt dauert 4 Stunden, 5 mal täglich startet eine Fähre. Auf das Schiff wird auch der Nachtzug Berlin-Malmö verladen.
Sassnitz was the first seaside health resort on Rügen Island. By chalk deposits, it was for centuries seaside resort and spa town, which was destroyed by the industrialization.
And the fisheries here has a long tradition that has remained until today. After the war - the largest flower of Sassnitz fisheries - belonged about 200 ocean-going fishing boats to this operation.
From here begins boat trips to the chalk cliffs and from the largest German train ferry port begins many Farrys and container ships to Denmark, Sweden, Lithuania and Russia.
The fastest connection between Germany and Sweden, is the use of the Stena Line ferry to Trelleborg, the crossing is 4 hours, 5 times a day to start a ferry. On the ship is loaded also the night train Berlin-Malmö.

Hallo Freunde. Willkommen in der Stadt Sassnitz einem Erholungsort mit circa 10 tausend Einwohnern. Sassnitz liegt im Nordosten der Insel Rügen in Mecklenburg Vorpommern.
Zu Sassnitz gehört auch Nationalpark Jasmund wo man durch den wunderschönen Buchenwald Wanderungen unternehmen kann. Die bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit hier ist der weltberühmte Kreidefelsen Königsstuhl.
