Romania Travel Video - Romanian history is filled with tales of heroic princes battling fierce Ottoman warriors. Thats all true, but it partly obscures the reality that much of Romania, for centuries, was a productive peasant culture.
The hilly geography and lack of passable roads necessitated the emergence of literally hundreds of self-sufficient villages, where old-school crafts such as bread making, pottery, tanning and weaving were honed to an art. These days much of the country has moved on to more modern methods, but a fondness for that simpler way of life persists. Folk museums, particularly open-air skansens, are a must. In smaller villages, many old folkways are still practised.

Castelul Kemény-Bánffy din Luncani se află în apropierea bisericii reformate din localitate, pe malul râului Arieș. Castelul Kemény-Bánffy din Luncani, judeţul Cluj, a fost construit pe domeniul aflat inițial, conform unui document din 1268, în posesia familiei Gerendi. Ultima dată când familia Gerendi este amintită în legătură cu domeniul și castelul din Luncani, a fost în 1597 când pe motiv de trădare, familia pierde domeniul și castelul, acestea intrând ceva mai târziu în posesia familiilor Jósika și Sarmasághy. Începand cu anul 1629, an în care consilierul Kemény Boldizsár, tatăl principelui Transilvaniei Kemény János (1661-1662), a preluat o parte a satului de la Bethlen Gábor, și până în anul 1861 (anul morții ultimului Kemény, înmormântat în cripta bisericii) a fost în proprietatea familiei Kemény. În 1861 castelul a fost moștenit de către Kun Josephine și Wilhelm Klebelsberg. Ulterior, a fost moștenit de familiile Zichy si Bánffy.
În urma celor două războaie mondiale, castelul a suferit unele pagube, mai ales între anii 1918-1919, fiind transformat în perioada regimului comunist în sediu al CAP-ului, iar o mare parte din clădirile anexe au fost demolate. În forma sa actuală castelul Kemény-Bánffy dispune de 44 de camere.
Familia Bánffy reintră în proprietea castelului și a unor loturi funciare aferente în anul 1990, urmând ca în 2003, intreaga avere să fie lăsată ca moștenire „Asociației Voluntare Bánffy” din satul Luncani. Baronul Bánffy István a dat acestei asociații și unele bunuri mobile, printre care 53 de tablouri și câteva zeci de piese de mobilier de epocă.
Kemény-Bánffy Castle in Luncani is near the local Reformed Church on the banks of the Arieș River. Kemény-Bánffy Castle in Luncani, Cluj County, was built on the domain originally found, according to a document from 1268, in the possession of the Gerendi family. The last time the Gerendi family is mentioned in connection with the Luncani estate and castle was in 1597 when, due to treason, the family lost the estate and the castle, which later came into the possession of the Jósika and Sarmasághy families. The Bánffy family re-entered the property of the castle and some related land lots in 1990, and in 2003, the entire fortune would be left as a legacy to the Bánffy Voluntary Association from Luncani village. Baron Bánffy István also gave this association some movable property, including 53 paintings and several dozen pieces of antique furniture.
