Worksop Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Nottinghamshire, and around 25 miles north of Nottingham, is the town of Worksop.

A settlement has existed in Worksop since at least Norman times. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as 'Werchesope'. The name comes from 'Weorc', an Old English person's name, and 'hop', meaning valley or enclosure.

Geographically Worksop is situated on the River Ryton at the northern edge of Sherwood Forest in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire at the northern end of the county. In 1296 it was granted a town charter during the reign of Edward I.

In 1777 the Chesterfield Canal opened, which passed through Worksop. This paved the way for growth in the town as industries emerged. Worksop's economy at this time mostly revolved around agriculture. The town was to be transformed with the discovery of coal in the area. The first coal mine was Shireoaks Colliery, which opened in 1859. The mining industry would provide employment to Worksop up until the 1990s when the pits eventually closed.

Today Worksop's economy revolves mostly around the service industry. It is situated roughly between Nottingham, Sheffield and Lincoln, making it practical for commuting purposes for those employed outside of the town.

Famous people from Worksop include football manager Graham Taylor, musician John Parr and golfer Lee Westwood.

Passport And Visas Requirements To Enter The UK

Please note: Following the recent referendum vote for the UK to leave the European Union (EU), there are currently no changes in the way people travel to Britain. The following guidelines still apply:

If you're planning an adventure to the UK, depending on your nationality and your reason for visiting, you may need to organise a visa.

If you're an American, Canadian or Australian tourist, you'll be able to travel visa-free throughout the UK, providing you have a valid passport and your reason for visiting meets the immigration rules (link is external).

Citizens from some South American and Caribbean countries as well as Japan are also able to travel visa-free around the UK.

European Union citizens, non-EU member states of the EEA (Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland), Switzerland, and members of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT) do not need a visa to enter the UK.

Bishop Auckland. Kynren, The Castle & Town. (4K Drone Footage)

Bishop Auckland is a market town and civil parish in County Durham, north east England, 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Darlington, 12 miles (19 km) southwest of Durham and 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Crook, at the confluence of the River Wear with its tributary the River Gaunless. At the 2001 census, Bishop Auckland had a population of 24,392.

Much of the town's early history surrounds the Bishops of Durham and the establishment of a hunting lodge, which later became Auckland Castle, the main residence of the Bishops of Durham. This link with the Bishops of Durham is reflected in the first part of the town's name.

During the Industrial Revolution, the town grew rapidly as coal mining took hold as an important industry. The subsequent decline of the coal mining industry in the late twentieth century has been blamed for a fall in the town's fortunes in other sectors. Today, the largest sector of employment in the town is manufacturing.

Walking Through History - Holy Cross Church Ryton

in ryton graveyard part one ????????Many, many interesting people are buried in Ryton churchyard, including all those mentioned, but also including many others. Of course, all we tend to know about these days are those for whom there is a surviving (and legible) gravestone. Over the 800 or so years during which the church has been there, there must have been many thousands of them, but the vast majority have no stones. Even the burial registers begin only in 1582 but the earliest of the 500+ stones I found when I recorded their inscriptions in 1975 was from the 18th century. I refer here to stones in the churchyard: yes, there are a few earlier ones inside the church but whereas those outside were the better-off local people, those inside the church tend to be the extremely well-off local aristocracy or major land-owners. How many worthy people have we now
Who knows? That piece of land has a history which goes back well before the church - or at least the present church - was built in about 1220. At some time, probably during Co Durham's civil war of the 1140s, someone, either the Bishop or else those trying to usurp his position, began to construct a castle there. It was probably never finished, as what remains is the Mound in the churchyard, which was probably intended as the Motte of a Motte-and-Bailey Castle. However, as a Motte it is a very small one, hence my saying it was probably unfinished. We can make a pretty good guess at where the Bailey would have been, and how large it was intended to be - and, surprise, surprise, it turns out to be exactly the position, size and shape of the original churchyard. That is the churchyard before it was extended, as it was at various times, mainly in the 19th century.

Lickey Hills Country Park, West Midlands | Exploring England

One of Birmingham’s most varied and treasured parks, Lickey Hills Country Park in the West Midlands covers 524 acres and is located just 10 miles south-west of Birmingham. The park offering family days out, to spot wildlife, for sport, school trips, or maybe just for the views and a cup of tea. With interesting geology which has created a variety of habitats such as woodlands, heathland and grassland, which are home to an incredible diversity of wildlife.

Also, a recipient of a Green Flag Award and in doing so is designated as a Country Park.

The hills became a frequent location for J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings after he moved to Rednal in 1904. Thought to be an inspiration for the mythical Shire, where the hobbits lived in his books.
