Adventures: A Weekend in Northeast Ohio

We had time for one last weekend away before my friend headed back to China. This time, we decided to explore parts of our home state of Ohio.

A drive through Coshocton County prompted a quick stop at Roscoe Village, a restored canal town on the Ohio & Erie Canal. We then headed to Holmes County, the heart of Ohio's Amish country. Picturesque views and delicious local foods coupled with quaint small towns make for an ideal place to visit. We took a short drive through Cuyahoga Valley National Park for some breathtaking waterfalls on our way to the corner of the state; Ashtabula County. With its lakeshore and lighthouses, the Grand River wine region, and the most covered bridges of any county in Ohio, Ashtabula County had no shortage of things to see.

Nebraska Ghost Towns Part 1 // Steele City, Belvidere, Pauline, Roscoe

My first Nebraska Ghost Town video took me all over the state! Steele City is filled with historical buildings even though the population is down to around 50. Belvidere has about the same amount of people and was a stop along The Oregon Trail. Pauline is very small and now unincorporated. And Roscoe is along a busy US 30 with some really great old structures to check out!

US 50 Road Trip ||| Days 9-10 ||| Western Nevada

My entire US 50 Road Trip Playlist:

The Loneliest Road in America continues through western Nevada! As we leave Austin the road is definitely very lonely - and beautiful in my opinion. Many years ago there were plenty of mining towns that dotted this landscape, but now it's hard to believe when you actually drive through it. Halfway through this video I stay the night in Fallon, which is the largest town since way back in Colorado. From there we are closing in on California and Lake Tahoe and the population starts to appear. When I started this trip, Nevada was the place I was most excited to visit and it definitely did not disappoint!

Historic Roscoe Village in Coshocton, Ohio - August 7, 2015

Roscoe Village is located in Coshocton, Ohio, United States, is a restored Ohio and Erie Canal town. Roscoe Village, was laid out in 1816, Roscoe was originally named Caldersburgh after its founder James Calder. After going bankrupt, the Coshocton merchant moved across the Muskingum River to some land he had somehow managed to retain. Setting up a store and naming the place after himself, Calder reasoned that the rural farmers would much rather do business in Caldersburgh than pay the twenty-five cents for the ferry over to Coshocton. In 1830, two prominent citizens petitioned the state legislature to rename the village Roscoe in honor of William Roscoe, the famous English author and abolitionist of the time.

The transformation of Roscoe from a small, sleepy community into a thriving port along the Ohio and Erie Canal came with the arrival of the canal and the landing of the first canal boat, the Monticello, on August 21, 1830. The Ohio and Erie Canal, which provided cheap transportation for people and goods, granted great economic development for communities along the waterway. With its status as the fourth largest wheat port on the canal, Roscoe’s prosperity ignited a chain of businesses in the area, including a blacksmith, a cooperage, a hotel, a mill, and several stores. State Route 16, which runs parallel to Roscoe today, is the location of the original Ohio and Erie Canal bed.

Until the great flood of 1913, the canals continued to operate, but the coming of the railroads marked the passing of the canal heyday. Along with the demise of the canal industry came the decline of Roscoe's prosperity, and the once thriving canal port and its beautiful Greek Revival buildings rapidly deteriorated.

In 1960, the idea of historical restoration in Roscoe came to prominence at the presentation of the Canal Days mural the distinguished American artist Dean Cornwell painted for Coshocton's 1961 Sesquicentennial Celebration. Cornwell chose a robust 1850s canal scene from Roscoe Village as the subject of his mural. This beautiful 24-foot-by-8-foot mural hangs today in Bank One of Coshocton while a smaller reproduction graces the lobby of the Roscoe Village Visitor Center.

Fascinated and inspired by the painting, retired Coshocton industrialist Edward E. Montgomery, and his wife, Frances, purchased the 1840 Toll House in August of 1968, thus beginning the restoration of Historic Roscoe Village. Roscoe Village would be, as Mr. Montgomery stated, a living museum so that people of the 20th century and succeeding ones could enjoy a visit back to the 19th century where aged brick buildings, hoop-skirted women, and quaint shops would bring the canal era back to life. Today, Roscoe Village is the result of more than 35 years of dedicated work.

The Foundation also purports to promote education with regard to life along the Ohio and Erie Canal in the mid 19th century. Living history is displayed and there are annual events which attract tourists from all over the country. The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is located in the village, and features decorative arts, pioneer and Native American artifacts and local history displays.

This is my 4th Top-10 Smallest Towns video! Previously I've done Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. These are the most popular videos on my channel, so if you know anyone from Nebraska please share it with them to help spread the word! Nebraska was a lot of fun to explore, and all of these towns have some history to find out about. It starts with Hendley and a population of 20 and goes all the way to Monowi (population 1). I even got an interview with the lone resident of Monowi, Elise Eiler!

Route 66 Ghost Towns Missouri - Times Beach, Rosati, Arlington, Devil’s Elbow

Times Beach history article:

I'm back on good ole Route 66! There is a lot of history in this video beginning with the unfortunate situation at Times Beach. Click the above link for more info on what happened. Rosati is a beautiful little stop along the Mother Road with a history of wine making. Most Route 66 adventurers might not take the road to Arlington, but it's well worth it! And we finish in Devil's Elbow - an awesome little community with their iconic curved bridge. Route 66 is always a great time!

Driving on Roscoe Blvd/La Tuna Canyon Road - 4K

Driving on Roscoe Boulevard in San Fernando Valley, California, USA

Roscoe Boulevard is a major west-east street in San fernando valey area of Los Angeles County in California.

Roscoe Blvd lays through many cities and neighborhoods of San Fernando Valley. Let's name some of those cities and communities. Roscoe Blvd begins in Canoga Park on the west, followed by Winnetka, then Reseda and Nortridge, Lake Balboa neighborhood, Van Nuys Airport, North Hills, Van Nuys, Panorama City and Sun Valley on the East.

In San Valley, Roscoe Boulevard ends and the road changes it's name to Tuxford Street and after that to La Tuna Canyon Road.

You are watching the driving tour video that takes you from Canoga Park to Sun Valley along Roscoe Boulevard.

The San Fernando Valley, known locally as The Valley, is an urbanized valley in Los Angeles County, California.

Located just north of the Los Angeles Basin, the valley incorporates part of the City of Los Angeles, as well as the incorporated cities of Glendale, Burbank, Calabasas, Hidden Hills and San Fernando.

Most of the San Fernando Valley is within the jurisdiction of the City of Los Angeles, although a few other incorporated cities are located within the valley as well: Burbank is in the southeastern corner of the valley, and San Fernando, which is completely surrounded by Los Angeles, is in the northeastern valley.

Universal City, an enclave in the southern part of the valley, is an unincorporated area housing the Universal Studios filming lot and theme park. Mulholland Drive, which runs along the ridgeline of the Santa Monica Mountains, marks the boundary between the valley and the communities of Hollywood and the Los Angeles Westside.

The San Fernando Valley has connection to other regions: The Santa Clarita Valley via Newhall Pass, the Westside via Sepulveda Pass, Hollywood via Cahuenga Pass, Simi Valley via Santa Susana Pass, and the Crescenta Valley via Interstate 210
