Amherst, New Hampshire Town Tour

- Exemplifying the town's colonial flair, Amherst's centerpiece is the Village Green. Visitors strolling past beautiful colonial-era homes and the magnificent town center, can feel the town's deep sense of history. One of only two towns in the country listed in its entirety as a Historic District, Amherst exemplifies late 18th- and early 19th-century architecture and charm.

The homes of Amherst signify appreciation for the heritage of the town, a heritage that goes back to its early days as a Narragansett township. At that time, land was granted by the state of Massachusetts for service rendered in the Narragansett wars. From this grant, Amherst began as part of Dunstable, Massachusetts, then became Dunstable, New Hampshire, and finally Amherst.Recreational facilities include several golf courses, tennis courts, and an outdoor skating rink. Baboosic Lake is available for swimming, boating, and fishing, while the 375-acre Joe English Reservation is a favorite for hiking and cross-country skiing. Annual local festivities include the annual lighting of the Christmas tree on the Village Green, the Fourth of July Parade, and the Amherst Antique Show and Sale in September.

While home prices here are higher, the town supports an excellent educational system, which includes the award-winning Souhegan High School.

Monson Center, NH - Ghost Town

This adventure brought us to the abandoned ghost town of Monson, NH (1746-1770). It is located on the Hollis/Milford line, but not easy to see from the street. The sign is located a bit down the trail in. This is the second ghost town we have explored, but unlike Livermore (the first one we explored) this one is preserved and maintained. There is one structure still standing, the Gould House. The rest are cellar holes, but they have a sign describing the past occupants. The caretaker, Russ Dickerman, is a wealth of knowledge about the place. It is worth the visit!

map of Massachusetts

Massachusetts (/ˌmæsəˈtʃuːsɪts/ (audio speaker iconlisten), /-zɪts/), officially the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,[a] is the most populous state in the New England region of the United States. It borders on the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Maine to the east, Connecticut to the southwest and Rhode Island to the southeast, New Hampshire to the northeast, Vermont to the northwest, and New York to the west. The capital of Massachusetts is Boston, which is also the most populous city in New England. It is home to the Greater Boston metropolitan area, a region influential upon American history, academia, and industry.[ Originally dependent on agriculture, fishing and trade,[] Massachusetts was transformed into a manufacturing center during the Industrial Revolution.[During the 20th century, Massachusetts's economy shifted from manufacturing to services.] Modern Massachusetts is a global leader in biotechnology, engineering, higher education, finance, and maritime trade.

Massachusetts was a site of early English colonization: the Plymouth Colony was founded in 1620 by the Pilgrims of the Mayflower, and in 1630 the Massachusetts Bay Colony, taking its name from the indigenous Massachusett people, established settlements in Boston and Salem. In 1692, the town of Salem and surrounding areas experienced one of America's most infamous cases of mass hysteria, the Salem witch trials. In 1777, General Henry Knox founded the Springfield Armory, which, during the Industrial Revolution, catalyzed numerous important technological advances, including interchangeable parts. In 1786, Shays' Rebellion, a populist revolt led by disaffected American Revolutionary War veterans, influenced the United States Constitutional Convention] In the 18th century, the Protestant First Great Awakening, which swept Britain and the Thirteen Colonies, originated from the pulpit of Northampton preacher Jonathan Edwards.[ In the late 18th century, Boston became known as the Cradle of Liberty for the agitation there that later led to the American Revolution.

The entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts has played a powerful scientific, commercial, and cultural role in the history of the United States. Before the American Civil War, Massachusetts was a center for the abolitionist, temperance, and transcendentalist[ movements.] In the late 19th century, the sports of basketball and volleyball were invented in the western Massachusetts cities of Springfield and Holyoke, respectively.] In 2004, Massachusetts became the first U.S. state to legally recognize same-sex marriage as a result of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court's decision in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health.[60] Many prominent American political dynasties have hailed from the state, including the Adams and Kennedy families. Harvard University in Cambridge is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States] with the largest financial endowment of any university,[62] and Harvard Law School has educated a contemporaneous majority of Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States.[] Kendall Square in Cambridge has been called the most innovative square mile on the planet, in reference to the high concentration of entrepreneurial start-ups and quality of innovation which have emerged in the vicinity of the square since 2010.[] Both Harvard and MIT, also in Cambridge, are perennially ranked as either the most or among the most highly regarded academic institutions in the world.[66] Massachusetts residents have been described by the World Population Review as having the highest average IQ of all U.S. states, exceeding 104,[] and the state's public-school students place among the top tier in the world in academic performance.[The state has been ranked as one of the top states in the United States for citizens to live in, as well as one of the most expensive mapa de Massachusetts

Malibu Day Trip

Malibu Day Trip

The California costal city of Malibu is a sunny mix of laid-back beach town with upscale and luxury hotspots, with beautiful beaches, natural hiking trails and famous celebrities with homes in the area.

Malibu begins where Santa Monica ends along the Pacific Costal Highway. For 21-miles a long PCH, a coastline that became California myth decades ago comes into view.

The cost line has a crescent - shaped shoreline with wide flat sandy beaches, wonderful rock formations and tall cliffs and bluffs giving parts of the shoreline a secluded atmosphere.

The Malibu Pier is a wonderful spot for people to watch surfers take to the waves, or anglers and fishermen trying their luck with rods and reels along the pier.

The pier’s history dates to1906 when Frederick Rindge and his wife May, commissioned a shipping wharf for the hides and grain their 17,000-acre Malibu Rancho produced.

Rindge purchased intact what was originally a Spanish Land grant known as Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit or Malibu Rancho in 1887 he was a founder of present-day Malibu, California located with in the original rancho.

Today, Malibu Farm Restaurant at the entrance to the pier, and Malibu Cafe at the end are the two go-to places serving healthy meals with locally sourced ingredients.

Hollywood noticed the beautiful coast and during it’s golden age in the 1920s and 30s, film studios shot sea epics at the pier. It was later the back drop for many 1960s beach blanket flicks with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello.

The famous Malibu Sports and Fishing pier is the perfect place to enjoy a walk especially at sunset.

Malibu Surfrider Beach is located right next to the Malibu pier. You may have seen Annette and Franky in movies like ….. there. Surfrider is part of Malibu Lagoon State Beach. Surfrider beach has the famous super long right hand surfing break.

Surfrider Beach was one of the places where modern surfing culture developed. The build up of sand, gravel and slit at the mouth of the creek produces smooth breaking waves recognized as the gold standard for point surfing.

Where Malibu creek meets the Pacific Ocean is Malibu Lagoon State Beach. Just up the beach from Surfrider is the adjacent lagoon and bird sanctuary is a wonderful place to explore along walking trails,

Visitors can picnic on tables and explore nature trails. A rare and unique tidal wetland ecosystem, excellent for bird watching migratory flocks that use the lagoon when traveling the Pacific Flyway.

Across the lagoon is the star-studded Malibu Colony, a private stretch of around 100 homes built along the beach. Its where many well-know actors, musicians, and business moguls can relax in the sun without photographers or the press watching.

In the 1920s the Rindge family allow small bungalows to be built on this secluded beach. Many silent era movie stars like Clara Bow built secret hide aways and the Malibu Movie Colony was born.

Over the years waves of entertainment personalities were supplanted by younger famous residents as music superstars such as Linda Ronstadt and Neil Diamond replaced old Hollywood royalty as new generations replace the last.

Across from the colony is the Malibu Village, a mix of local boutiques high-end retail shop and dining between public art areas. This is where most of Malibu’s close-knit community and residents shop.

Multiple boutiques are spaced around gardens equipped with playgrounds, sculptures and picnic areas. The shopping mall has turned into a tourist attraction for those shopping for upscale brands.

A small town with a big reputation, It’s broad sandy beaches, coastal bluffs, cliffs and rock coves makes Malibu the perfect place to relax and have fun in the sun. Whether you’re seeking beaches, celebrity hangouts, or must see stops this wonderful, small beach city has it all.
