Rendsburg is a town on the River Eider and the Kiel Canal in the central part of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is the capital of the Kreis (district) of Rendsburg-Eckernförde. As of 2006, it had a population of 28,476.
Rendsburg's foundation date is unknown though some form of fortifications was established by Bjørn Svendsen 1099–1100. Rendsburg was first mentioned in 1199. An old form of its name was Reinoldesburch.
It became a part of Holstein in the 13th century, but was transferred to Schleswig in 1460. Many times the town passed from Danish to German control and vice versa. In the German-Danish War in 1864 Rendsburg was finally seized by Kingdom of Prussia and Austria. After 1866 the town was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia. Since that time it has remained part of Germany.
Although the Eider is navigable for small craft from its mouth on the North Sea to Rendsburg, the town's importance rose in 1895, when the Kiel Canal was finished. The much larger ships that could navigate the Kiel Canal meant that, although situated inland, Rendsburg became a seaport and a dockyard.
The most prominent structure in town, the Rendsburg High Bridge, a railway bridge made of steel, 2,500 metres (8,200 ft) in length and 41 metres (135 ft) in height, was constructed in 1913 to take the Neumünster–Flensburg railway over the Kiel Canal from the relatively flat land on either side. It is the longest railway bridge in Europe (highway/rail bridge Øresund Bridge is longer): on the northern side, the bridge connects to the Rendsburg Loop to gain height and to allow trains to continue to serve the Rendsburg station. Suspended from the railway bridge, a transporter bridge – one of only twenty ever built – traverses the canal.
The German Army's Air Defence School and the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz are both located in Rendsburg.

Северная Германия является не исключением из этого правила и пожалуй наиболее известными представителями этого региона являются крупные города такие как Гамбург и Бремен. Однако, в этой части Германии есть еще и множество других не менее, а иногда даже более красивых городов. Сейчас у нас есть возможность жить в Германии и несмотря на ограничения вызванные Covid-19 и невозможность путешествий по Европе мы стараемся проводить выходные с пользой и по возможности стараемся поехать посмотреть близлежащие города чтобы познакомится с историей и насладиться архитектурой немецких городов. Сегодня мы хотим прогуляться вместе с вами по малоизвестному, но очень приятному немецкому городу Рендсбург! Этот немецкий город который находится на середине Кильского канала когда-то принадлежат Дании, но в результате объединения земель Шлезвиг и Гольштейн вошел в состав Пруссии в середине девятнадцатого века.
Этому городу с тысячелетней историей удавалось оставаться непримечательным до середины 19 века пока не произошло окончание датско-немецкой войны и город не стал полноценной частью объединенной Германии. Строительство Кильского канала, который соединил Северное и Балтийское моря, позволило задышать Рендсбургу на полную грудь, а удивительная сохранность города несмотря на бурный ХХ век позволила сохранить шарм старинного немецкого города.

This Vlog is about the historical town of Rendsburg located in northern Germany. It is a small town situated between Eiger rived and Kiel canal known for its historical importance in the Nazi- era.
The closest big city is Hamburg which is around 106 kms away.
The easiest way to reach this town is by railway. Almost all the places to be visited can be covered on foot.
Don't miss the chance to walk through the small roads in the old town.

Kiel Canal – the Doorstep of The Baltic Sea | Ep. 143
We transit Germany’s Kiel Canal and enter the Baltic Sea, a dream of ours that has taken several years to realize given the challenges posed by the pandemic. The Kiel Canal holds a bunch of wonders along its 98 kilometer meandering route and we share these with you. Jump on board and watch numerous and varied ships pass closely by us as we make our way first to Rendsburg and then into the Kiel fjord at the other end.
At this point we have been in northern Germany for just five days and we can see their engineering minds at work in the way they have established a robust wind power industry on the shores of their waterways. Impressive.
In Rendsburg, we also show off another German engineering marvel – the Rendsburg High bridge (Rendsburger Hochbrücke, officially Eisenbahnhochbrücke Rendsburg) that is both a railway viaduct and a suspended car/pedestrian ferry transporter, one of only a few in the world!

Ep8 | Kiel Canal Transit 2020 - Part 1: East Lock to Rendsburg
Do you want to know how we transited the Kiel Canal from East to West?
Some of our preparation & inspiration was drawn out from the episode How to lock-in at the Kiel Canal of Sailors & Seadogs here:
In this Part 1 of our transit through the east lock near Kiel we make an overnight stop in the rain on the Eider River which veers off the canal towards Rendsburg at a little dock just across from the Eider Marina.
We enjoyed this first part of our transit and didn't experience any challenges too difficult for us. (The sailboat in front of us lost a few fenders in the process, however ;) )
We sailed back and forth for about an hour & a half and ended up being nearest to the lock entrance just before the white continuous light turned from red, giving us the go-ahead to venture in. So, we got a place on the wall/dock. However, since all pleasure vessels had to tie on to the left side, we had 2 similar-sized yachts tie on to our yacht. A first for us.

RCF Tour Eisstübchen in Rendsburg
Am Eisstübchen, direkt am Hafen von Rendsburg bin ich noch nicht aufgeschlagen. Bei best Wetter schöne Tour an den Nordostseekanal gemacht. Auf Halber Strecke zwischen Sehestedt und Rendsburg geht ein kleiner Feldweg direkt runter an den Kanal. Hier habe ich eine Kaffeepause gemacht und ein bisschen ab gedödelt. Von dort ging es zum Eisstübchen, wo es wirklich leckeres Eis gibt.
