The #Bridge at #Remagen - Monument to Peace and Freedom
The railway bridge in Remagen was planned in 1912 and built from 1916 - 1918 during the First World War to bring troops to the Western Front. ‘Kaiser Wilhelm II’ named it Ludendorff Bridge in honour of the General Quartermaster of the Army, Erich Ludendorff.
During the Second World War, it achieved the fame it still enjoys today when, on 7 March 1945, soldiers of the 9th ‘US Panzer Division’ were able to capture the Ludendorff Bridge completely unexpectedly and undestroyed. On the German side, the prepared demolition had failed. General Eisenhower is said to have commented on this Miracle of Remagen with the exclamation The bridge is worth its weight in gold.
When Hans Peter Kürten became mayor of Remagen in 1965, he was astonished to find that nothing, apart from the dilapidated ruins of the bridge towers, reminded of the terrible events of 1945. It would take another 15 years until he was able to realise his idea of a museum in the bridge towers in 1980. As a member of the last generation to experience the war himself, he chose the name Peace Museum.
The museum impressively displays pictures and documents of that time, everyday objects and equipment of the soldiers fighting at the bridge and much more. The visitor is immersed in the historical events of the battle for the Remagen Bridge at its original site and will understand the significance inherent in the conquest of this bridge and the courage and determination it took to accept the real dangers involved, including one's own death.

Remagen
Remagen is a town in Germany in Rhineland-Palatinate, in the district of Ahrweiler. I It is situated on the River Rhine. There is a ferry across the Rhine from Remagen every 10-15 minutes in the summer. Remagen has many beautiful and well-maintained buildings, churches, palaces and monuments. It also has a sizeable pedestrian zone with plenty of shops as can be seen in this film.
Overlooking the west bank of the Rhine just north of the city centre is the Apollinariskirche. It has a great observation deck that is only open to parishioners on Sundays. Pedestrians reach the church via a dirt trail that passes a series of roadside monuments representing each of the fourteen Stations of the Cross. The church grounds contain an outdoor crypt and an abbey. Further down the river is one of the many castles along the River Rhine, perched even higher than the Apollinariskirche. The church is not shown in this film except at a distance but that will be remedied after the next visit to this charming town.

In May 2023, I embarked on an exhilarating and whirlwind adventure, tracing the historic path along the scenic route from Waterloo in Belgium to the iconic bridge at Remagen in Germany. The journey kicked off in Waterloo, Belgium, a town steeped in military history. As I explored the site where Napoleon Bonaparte faced his final defeat in 1815, I felt the echoes of the past in the air, surrounded by lush green fields that once witnessed a pivotal moment in European history.
From Waterloo, I took on a swift and picturesque journey down the tranquil waters of the Mosel River in Germany. The river, adorned with charming villages and picturesque landscapes, provided a serene backdrop while cruising along, taking in the beauty of the surrounding nature. The gentle river flow allowed us to relax and immerse ourselves in the peaceful ambiance of the countryside.
The adventure reached its climax after arriving at the famous bridge at Remagen. This historic structure, immortalized in World War II, originally stood proudly over the river, a symbol of resilience and triumph. As I stood on remnants of the bridge, I couldn't help but marvel at its sturdy architecture and the stories it held within what was left. Imagining the events that transpired here during the war, you felt a profound reverence for the soldiers who fought bravely for freedom.
Though the trip was brief, the memories etched in one's mind were unforgettable. From the fields of Waterloo to the serene waters of the Mosel River, and finally, the historic bridge at Remagen, the journey was a captivating blend of history, natural beauty, and cultural richness.

Remagen, Germany - tour of second world war (WW2) historic Remagen bridge (Ludendorff Bridge) in Germany. Let's visit the historic Ludendorff Bridge (sometimes referred to as the Bridge at Remagen) which was in early March 1945 one of two remaining bridges across the River Rhine in Germany when it was captured during the Battle of Remagen by United States Army forces during the closing weeks of World War II. Remagen bridge (Ludendorff Bridge) was built in World War I to help deliver reinforcements and supplies to the German troops on the Western Front, it connected Remagen on the west bank and the village of Erpel on the eastern side between two hills flanking the river. At the end of Operation Lumberjack (March 1–7, 1945), the troops of the American 1st Army approached Remagen and were surprised to find that Remagen bridge (Ludendorff Bridge) was still standing. Its capture enabled the U.S. Army to establish a bridgehead on the eastern side of the Rhine. After the U.S. forces captured Remagen bridge (Ludendorff Bridge), German forces tried to destroy it multiple times until it collapsed on March 17, 1945, ten days after it was captured, killing 28 U.S. Army Engineers. While it stood, the bridge enabled the U.S. Army to deploy 25,000 troops, six Army divisions, with many tanks, artillery pieces and trucks, across the Rhine. It was never rebuilt. The towers on the west bank were converted into a museum and the towers on the east bank are a performing art space.

Cinematic caravan trip Europe continues. In episode 10 of Caravan trip Europe, we arrive in the German idyllic small towns of Remagen and Aldekerk. Our journey by motorhome goes along autobahns through Germany. Overnight was stellplatz and self-help areas. You can safely cycle from one village to another along cycle paths. Remagen has a wild history from World War II. Cafceteries and terraces in cozy little streets are nice places to enjoy cappuccinos and pastries.
