Places to see in ( Harpenden - UK )

Places to see in ( Harpenden - UK )

Harpenden is a town in the St Albans City district in the county of Hertfordshire, England. Harpenden is a commuter town, with a direct rail connection through Central London and property prices well over double the national average.

Geographically Harpenden is located between (and a short distance from) two much larger neighbours: Luton town (to the north) and the city of St Albans (to the south). Harpenden is flanked by the villages of Redbourn (to the west) and Wheathampstead (to the east).

A widespread but now little-known industry of Harpenden was straw-weaving, a trade mainly carried out by women in the nineteenth century. A good straw weaver could make as much as a field labourer. The straw plaits were taken to the specialist markets in St Albans or Luton and bought by dealers to be converted into straw items such as boaters and other hats or bonnets.

The arrival of the railway system from 1860 and the sale of farms for residential development after 1880 radically changed Harpenden's surroundings. First the Dunstable Branch of the Great Northern Railway passed through the Batford area with a station later named Harpenden East railway station (this line is now closed and forms a cycle track).

There are two civil parishes: Harpenden and Harpenden Rural. As Harpenden is located in Hertfordshire just outside London, Harpenden is an area of extremely high property costs. This is common in the region. Harpenden has a large number of its streets named after English literary figures on the East side of the town (an area known, unsurprisingly, as the Poets' Corner), including Byron Road, Cowper Road, Kipling Way, Milton Road, Shakespeare Road, Spenser Road, Shelley Court, Tennyson Road, Townsend Road, Masefield Road and Wordsworth Road.

Harpenden railway station is served by Thameslink on a frequent and fast rail link through central London. Suburban services stop at all stations on the route, while express services stop at St Albans City before continuing non-stop to London St Pancras International, (Harpenden to St Pancras International – 25 minutes). Trains run north to Luton, Luton Airport Parkway and on to Bedford.

The A6 used to run through Harpenden, although the road numbering was changed to avoid congestion. The M1 runs nearby. The closest access to the M1 is Junction 9 at Redbourn & Dunstable or alternatively Junction 10 for Luton & Airport. A number of bus services pass through Harpenden. There are 4 main frequent and reliable routes.

A notable feature of Harpenden is its abundant parks and commons. The central area of Harpenden, known locally as the village is characterised by Church Green, Leyton Green and the High Street Greens, which give the town its provincial feel.

Just to the south of the town centre is Harpenden Common, stretching from the shops in the town centre for more than a mile to the south, encompassing a total of 238 acres (96 ha). Today Harpenden Common hosts two cricket clubs, Harpenden Cricket Club, a Hertfordshire Premier League club that celebrated its 150 anniversary in 2013 and Bamville Cricket Club who play on Sundays on the golf course, a football club, bridle ways for horse riding, ramblers' paths and Harpenden Common Golf Club

Scunthorpe Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in North Lincolnshire, around 13 miles southwest of the Humber Bridge, is the town of Scunthorpe.

It is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Escumesthorpe', which is derived from Old Norse, meaning 'Skuma's village/hamlet' - Skuma presumably being the name of a Viking settler.

Scunthorpe was just a collection of five quiet villages up until 1860. It was around this time that vast iron ore deposits were discovered in the area, leading to the subsequent development of its steel industry. At first the iron ore was exported to iron producers in South Yorkshire. Later on, with the development of the Trent, Ancholme and Grimsby Railway, Scunthorpe was able to receive coal/coke from colliery towns such as Doncaster. With this, they were able to produce homegrown foundries for iron production.

During the Second World War Scunthorpe was subject to some air raid attacks from the German Luftwaffe, albeit not to the same degree as certain other towns and cities. Iron and steel manufacturing continued during these years in spite of the apparent risk. A monument dedicated to the steelworkers of the time is situated on the High Street (visible just before the 4-minute mark).

In 1967 three major steelworks companies in Scunthorpe (Appleby-Frodingham, Redbourn Iron Works and Normanby Works) merged under the umbrella of the newly-formed British Steel. Privatisation of British Steel occurred in 1988, and after a merger, became Corus, then Tata Steel Europe. British Steel Ltd bought back the company in 2016, though in 2019 entered insolvency.

Bourton on Water Village in England ????????

Today trip is Bourton-on-the-Water
Village in England. Hope you guys enjoy.

A Tour of Beautiful Bibury including Arlington Row

If you’re looking for a quaint, picturesque village to visit in the Cotswolds, then Bibury it is! A series of two gorgeous hamlets that are split by the River Coln.

On one side of the stream, you have Bibury and on the other side, you have Arlington, Rack Isle and Awkward Hill!

William Morris once said that Bibury was ‘surely, the most beautiful village in England’ and I can’t say I disagree with him. It’s like walking through an old oil painting hanging in a gallery.

We also had a walk around the trout farm, including feeding the fish which was great fun and very therapeutic.

Hertfordshire Village Walks. Part 7: Watton-at-Stone, Sacombe, High Cross and Wadesmill.

This walk takes Sylvie and I from the Hertfordshire village of Watton-at-Stone out through Woodhall Park and up to Sacombe, where we stop at the church used for scenes in the 2001 film 'Enigma', starring Kate Winslett. Then we go on to Standon Green End, where we visit a monument to an extraordinary event in British history that many people probably haven't even heard of? Then we pass through High Cross and down to Wadesmill before walking back to Watton.

Best of the Hertfordshire County Show 2023

Come with us to the Hertfordshire County Show! This is our second county show for the 2023 season. This is our first time in Hertfordshire and we were not disappointed.

Run by the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society, The Hertfordshire County Show started as a ploughing match on the grounds of Hatfield House in 1879, becoming a full County Show 7 years later. Since 1962, it has been held at the Showground in Redbourn, but prior to this it was held at various locations across the County. The Show is held annually on Saturday and Sunday of the last May bank holiday.

The Show is organised with the intention of helping to ‘educate and raise awareness about local agriculture and all associated skills and trades’, which is why we encourage all visitors to visit the Hertfordshire Farmyard and ‘Meet The Farmer’.

Through the years, this objective has grown to include ‘support local businesses, services and enterprises’, so across the Showground you’ll find talented artisans, producers and traders from across the County – A Showcase of Hertfordshire’s finest!

The Show still maintains many traditional County Show values, such as the Equine and Livestock Showing, as well as the Show Jumping – we now offer one of the best grass surfaces for jumping in the country! The Grand Parade is a spectacular display at many County Shows and we are proud to be able to show over 50 animals each day.

The Show is run by over 140 volunteer stewards – these are the friendly, smartly dressed faces you’ll see around the Show! Throughout the year, a team of these Stewards create the ‘Show Committee’ who regularly gather to lead the Show into the next year, ensuring we not only meet our educational objectives, but create a family friendly event you can look forward to each year.
