Things to do in Kundasang- The complete 2D1N itinerary
We visited Kundasang, the small town near Mount Kinabalu, recently.
With an altitude of 1900m, Kundasang is a mountain town with nice scenery and stunning mountain ranges, with Mount Kinabalu as the breathtaking backdrop.
Our Kundasang itinerary includes all the places we planned for. We passed the Tamparuli Suspension Bridge, a sight that was a feast for the eyes. We also stopped by Sinalau Bakas Himbaan Bongol at Tuaran to try the famous Sinalau Bakau, a local smoked wild boar meat. Another stopover was Pekan Nabalu, where I could soak in the local culture, purchase souvenirs, and appreciate the spectacular scenery of the surrounding mountains.
Upon arriving at the Kundasang Market, we were greeted by the frigid weather and misty scenery that added charm to the place. Kundasang is a peaceful town, and the people were friendly, providing a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of Kota Kinabalu.
While in Kundasang, we visited the Desa Cattle Dairy Farm, a popular tourist spot. The farm was home to hundreds of cows and provided a glimpse into the dairy farming industry. Sosodikon Hill has a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, another must-visit site, even if you intend to climb Mount Kinabalu. Visiting the Alpaca Club was a memorable experience as we could touch and feed the alpacas. We also visited the Poring Hot Spring and walked across the suspension bridge.
The highlight of my trip to Kundasang was seeing the Rafflesia, a rare and beautiful flower in full bloom, in the nearby village.

This part of Malaysian Borneo is nicknamed 'the New Zealand of Malaysia' and even though we've never been to New Zealand, it felt that way. The state of Sabah is so stunning. We only wished we had more time to see more of Malaysian Borneo.

Poring Hot Spring, Ranau, Sabah, Malaysia (Hot Spring, Butterfly farm, Canopy Walk And Many More)
A visit to Ranau would not be complete without stopping by at Poring Hot Springs, a tropical retreat that caters to everyone. Poring comes from a KadazanDusun word which means bamboo and is found abundant in this area.
Poring is known for its hot sulphur spring bath which was first developed by the Japanese during world war II. The hot waters of the spring are piped into open-air baths. Indoor bathtub is also available for those who preferred privacy. At Poring you could experience the breathtaking treetop walk on the 43m tall canopy walkway. Rafflesia, the largest flower in the world is one of the main attractions here.

KUNDASANG - RANAU - SABAH - MALAYSIA
Kundasang is a hill station in the district of Ranau in Sabah, Malaysia that lies along the bank of Kundasang Valley within the Crocker Range, and also neighboring the town of Pekan Nabalu. It is located about 6 kilometres away from Kinabalu National Park, 12 kilometres from Ranau town and is renowned for its vegetable market which is open seven days a week. It is the closest town to Mount Kinabalu and has a panoramic view of the mountain. It is populated mainly by the native Dusun and a small population of Chinese people. Almost all the shops are operated by locals.
At an elevation of almost 1,900 m (6,200 ft), it is the highest settlement in Malaysia. Kundasang is also famously known as the New Zealand of Borneo for its unique mountainous geographical terrain almost similar to New Zealand.
Kundasang War Memorial and Gardens
The memorial is on a hill immediately behind the vegetable wholesale stalls. Major G. S. Carter, D.S.O. (Toby Carter) a New Zealander employed with Shell Oil Co. (Borneo) initiated the building of the Memorial in 1962, together with the launching of Kinabalu Park to commemorate the 2,428 Australian and British prisoners who died during World War II at the Sandakan POW Camp, and the casualties of the three infamous forced death marches from Sandakan to Ranau. It also serves as a tribute to the many local people who risked their lives while aiding the prisoners of war. Only six Australians survived in this tragedy to tell their horror and there were no English survivors.
The fort-like Memorial was designed by J.C. Robinson, a local architect. It has four interlocking but separate gardens to represent the homelands of those who died: an Australian Garden, a formal English Garden of roses, a Borneo Garden with wild flowers of Kinabalu and at the top level is the 'Contemplation Garden' with a reflection pool and pergola.
To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Memorial was restored in 2005 by Mr Sevee Charuruks and with his own personal funds. No government funding was available during the major restoration project in 2005. However, years later help came from the Australian Government in the form of several grants.
Vegetable wholesale stalls
Fruits such as rambutan, salak, oranges and lemons can also be found at the vegetable stalls in Kundasang.
Beside the main road vegetables wholesalers can be found in a long row of wooden stalls (Malay: gerai). Bulk buyers come from all over the state of Sabah, Sarawak and even Brunei for the fresh harvest. Pick up trucks are seen laden fully with harvest from the farms nearby the valley and delivered to the stalls. Passing tourists and travellers also stop by the road for shopping at a good bargain with the stalls are open seven days a week.
Golf course
The Kundasang golf course is located near the border of Kinabalu National Park at an altitude of approximately 2000 metres above sea level.

Walk: Poring Hot Springs at Ranau, Sabah
Poring Hot Spring situated about 43km from Kinabalu Park is a must visit if you are in Sabah. Located in the Ranau district, Poring is about a 2-hour drive away from Kota Kinabalu city. The name Poring comes from the Kadazan word for a bamboo species which can found in the area.
Besides the natural hot spring main attraction at Poring Hot Springs, there are other interesting attractions located within the park to visit such as the butterfly farm, the Poring Orchid Conservation Centre, the tropical garden, the Poring canopy walkway and the Rafflesia flower area.
The Entrance fee is RM15 per adult (non-Malaysian) or RM3 per adult (Malaysian) while children fee is RM10 and RM1 respectively.
At the end of the day, Poring Hot Spring at Ranau, Sabah is a great place for families and groups as it is very well managed and many activities to do.
