Experience East Belgium
East Belgium inspires visitors with its nature, its breathtaking landscapes between the Eifel and the Ardennes, whilst offering countless possibilities to experience them closely. As well as the unique landscape, there are lots of destinations and attractions to discover during your holiday.
The attractions include museums, institutions of art and culture, castles, fortresses and churches, but also some magnificent lakes and swimming pools for carefree bathing enjoyment with the whole family.
Apart from cycling and hiking, anyone wishing to stay active will find many other possibilities for doing sport and getting to know the country and its people at the same time. Well preserved monuments and landmarks bring the history of this border region to life. It is with particular pride that the inhabitants draw attention to their original products and the many traditions and regional spectacles of nature which come to life here year after year.
Each region has its own identity: in Raeren, the pottery museum resides in a moated castle. In Eupen, the capital of the German-speaking community, visitors are enchanted by the Oberstadt lined by patrician houses. Gourmets feel drawn to the inviting centre of the town, hikers to the Hertogenwald. In summer, the town of Malmedy turns into a sea of flowers. The former monastery is home to the Malmundarium, an interactive culture and visitors' centre. Bütgenbach is characterised by water and by the leisure amenities at the Worriken reservoir. The town of St. Vith stands for excellent restaurants and charming rural surroundings at the intersection between the Eifel and the Ardennes.

Aachen is a spa city near Germany’s borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. Aachen Cathedral was founded around 800 A.D. and a Gothic chancel was added later.
Its Domschatzkammer (treasury) has medieval artifacts including the shrine of Charlemagne, who was buried here in 814 A.D. Nearby is the baroque town hall, Aachener Rathaus, with 19th-century frescoes. Sulfurous water fills the fountains of Elisenbrunnen.

Aachen is one of our top 10 cities in Germany and worth a visit. Aachen Cathedral is world-famous. And so are the tasty Printen. Aachen is located at the border triangle of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Because of this location, you can feel Europe everywhere you go. We are theTravellers and show you Aachen in 5 minutes.
We start our Aachen tour at the city hall. It's worth taking a look inside. We continue to the Centre Charlemange city museum. On the way through the old town we eat some Printen. We pass the Elisenbrunnen - another landmark of Aachen. A little further out of town is the Lousberg. From here you have a view of the city from above.
If you're in Aachen for the weekend or even longer, e.g. for ERASMUS at rwth Aachen, it's worth taking a day trip to Monschau and the border triangle.

Daneben entdeckt Lisa Kestel auf ihrem Rundgang aber auch Thermalquellen, Printenbäcker, Studentenkneipen und viele andere wunderschöne Ecken. Sie beendet den Ausflug im Stadtwald mit einem Begleiter auf vier Hufen.

Here we have a video we have put together from our trip to Aachen in Germany. This pretty little German city is on the border with the Netherlands & Belgium, and is home to one of UNESCO's first World Heritage Sites - it's Cathedral.

Aachen has been around for millennia. The Romans nursed their war wounds and stiff joints in the steaming waters of its mineral springs, but it was Charlemagne who put the city firmly on the European map. The emperor, too, enjoyed a dip now and then, but it was more for strategic reasons that he made Aachen the geographical and political capital of his vast Frankish Empire in 974 – arguably the first empire with European dimensions.

The Vaalserberg is also the location of the Tripoint between Germany DE ( Deutschland ), Belgium BL and the Netherlands NL( holland Dutch ), and its summit is therefore called the Drielandenpunt (three country point) in Dutch, or Dreiländereck (three country corner) in German, or Trois Frontières (three borders) in French.

EastBelgium - Surprisingly Large
The character of Eastbelgium has been formed over the years by its location in the heart of Europe. There is a tripoint in the north of the region where three countries meet -- Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany -- while the western border connects it with French-speaking Wallonia. It then borders Luxembourg in the south and the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rheinland-Palatinate in the east. You'll find that its location and the influence of its neighbours have given Eastbelgium a very specific identity. The main ingredients are a mixture of Belgian calmness and German reliability, with a good shot of hedonism thrown in to round out the picture.
With a surface area of 1036 square kilometres, you will find Eastbelgium surprisingly large in cultural, language as well as culinary terms. Its eclectic nature is also reflected in the language. French is spoken in Malmedy and its environs, with German being spoken in the rest of Eastbelgium. The differences with its neighbouring countries also go without saying. In the border country near Aachen you will see the start of a landscape which has not let agricultural land consolidation and industrial agricultural production strip it of its charm. It's just real countryside, relaxed and like a painted backdrop. The narrow lanes seem only to have been put there for the purpose of leading you down the scenic route to the next picture postcard village, to the next atmospheric town. It's likely, in fact almost certain, that you will chance upon a restaurant serving regional cuisine along your way, because Eastbelgium is also full of gastronomic surprises.

On Saturday 10 June 2023, I rode my e-bike from Aachen in Germany via Eupen the German-speaking part of Belgium to Verviers the French-speaking part of Belgium.
This stretch was filmed between Aachen and Raeren.

Vennbahn - www.eastbelgium.com - Europe's longest continuous cross-border cycle path
The end result of the Vennbahnroute Interreg project is Europe's longest continuous cross-border cycle path and footpath on disused railway tracks. From an administrative point of view there are two Interreg projects which are respectively located in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion (the border area between Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium) and the Greater Region covering the broader area between Germany, France and Belgium.
The 125 km long Vennbahn passes through three different countries, from Aachen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, through Eastbelgium, near to the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The route, which owes its name to the unique High Fens nature reserve and has experienced an eventful history as the Vennbahn, has been given a new purpose.
The added value for the region's tourism only became clear when several separate sections were combined and connected to existing paths. Right from the start the aim was to create an extensive cross-border network of greenways in the region in which the Vennbahn would play a key role as the North-South axis. In the North it connects to the German D4 cycle route and to the Green Route in Aachen. The link from Eupen station to the Vennbahn and the connection to Route 38 in the municipality of Raeren are clearly signposted. The RurUfer cycle path meets the Vennbahn at the town of Monschau. The municipality of Waimes lies on the Vennbahn where it crosses the East-West axis between Germany and Wallonia. The Eifel-Ardennes cycle path connects the partner towns of St. Vith and Prüm in the southern Eifel and continues along the tracks of the Vennbahn as far as Steinebrück. A short train connection will take you to the city of Luxembourg.
