A visit to The Lößnitzgrundbahn steam line | Radebeul Germany | 23/2/19
The Lößnitzgrundbahn meter gauge line Steam route runs through some picturesque countryside from Radebeul (10km outside Dresden City Centre) to Moritzburg and Radeburg and utilities meter gauge trains with Saxon IV4 2-10-2T locos as the main fleet. The meter gauge line
A daily timetable with a one train service operates pretty much all throughout the year with specials timetables in force on high-days and holidays. On this day, Saturday the 23rd of February, the normal timetable was in action with one of the home fleet of engines in action.
Footage in this video includes a brief look at the station at Radebeul Ost which parallels the mainline out of Dresden, and also includes some shots on the first 2-6km of the line. Loco 99 1789-9 does the honors for the day. Hope you enjoy!

Driver’s Eye View - Dresden (Germany) - Part 1 - Radebeul-Radeburg Railway, (Lößnitzgrundbahn)
The Radebeul–Radeburg railway, one of Germany’s oldest narrow gauge railways is a 750 mm (2 ft 5+1⁄2 in) narrow gauge, steam operated line on the outskirts of Dresden, Germany, also known as the Lößnitzgrundbahn (Lössnitz Valley Railway) and locally nicknamed the Lößnitzdackel (Lößnitz Dachshund),.
Primarily a tourist attraction, the line maintains a year-round timetable between its main base at Radebeul East station adjacent to the Deutsche Bahn station on the main line between Dresden and Meissen. Scheduled traffic on the Radebeul to Radeburg line is maintained by Sächsische Dampfeisenbahngesellschaft mbH using steam locomotives built in the 1950s.
Older trains, using engines and carriages built in the late 19th and early 20th century, are maintained and operated by the non-profit Traditionsbahn Radebeul. Heritage trains can be seen in action on special event days.
Our train steams on towards Radeburg, crossing Dippelsdorf Lake on a causeway to reach Moritzburg, famous for its Baroque castle, Schloss Moritzburg. After a short stop at Moritzburg, we set off again passing next to Bärnsdorf Lake divided by a dam into the Upper and Lower ponds complete with a Lighthouse. After a brief halt at Bärnsdorf our train picks up speed, passing a series of picturesque villages as it traverses relatively flat farm land to reach the end of the line at Radeburg.
At 33:10 it has been pointed out to me that I’ve made a mistake, the Pond/Lake is not ‘Deutschbaselitzer Großteich’ as shown in the caption, it should read ‘Großteich’.

Dresden is the capital city of the German state of Saxony. Dresden is contiguous with Freital, Pirna, Radebeul, Meissen and Coswig. The largest city on the River Elbe after Hamburg. Most of Dresden's population lives in the Elbe Valley, but a large, albeit very sparsely populated area of the city east of the Elbe lies in the West Lusatian Hill Country and Uplands (the westernmost part of the Sudetes) and thus in Lusatia, while many boroughs west of the Elbe lie in the foreland of the Ore Mountains as well as in the valleys of the rivers rising there and flowing through Dresden, the longest of which are the Weißeritz and the Lockwitzbach. The name of the city as well as the names of most of its boroughs and rivers are of Slavic origin. Dresden is the second largest city in the Thuringian-Upper Saxon dialect area, following only Leipzig. The Sorbian language area begins east of the city, in Lusatia. Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendor, and was once by personal union the family seat of Polish monarchs. The city was known as the Jewel Box, because of its baroque and rococo city centre.
