map of Nottingham England

Nottingham (/ˈnɒtɪŋəm/ (audio speaker iconlisten) NOT-ing-əm, locally /ˈnɒtnʊm/) is a city and unitary authority area in Nottinghamshire, East Midlands, England. It is 128 miles (206 km) north of London, 44 miles (71 km) south of Sheffield, 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Birmingham. Nottingham has links to the legend of Robin Hood and to the lace-making, bicycle, and tobacco industries. Nottingham is also the county town of Nottinghamshire and the settlement was granted its city charter in 1897, as part of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Nottingham is a tourist destination; in 2018, the city received the second-highest number of overnight visitors in the Midlands and the highest number in the East Midlands.

In 2020, Nottingham had an estimated population of 330,000. The wider conurbation, which includes many of the city's suburbs, has a population of 768,638. It is the largest urban area in the East Midlands and the second-largest in the Midlands. Its Functional Urban Area, the largest in the East Midlands, has a population of 919,484. The population of the Nottingham/Derby metropolitan area is estimated to be 1,610,000.[4] The metropolitan economy of Nottingham is the seventh-largest in the United Kingdom with a GDP of $50.9 billion (2014).[11] Aside from Birmingham, it is the only city in the Midlands to be ranked as a sufficiency-level world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network.

Nottingham is a major sporting centre and, in October 2015, was named 'Home of English Sport'. The National Ice Centre, Holme Pierrepont National Watersports Centre, and Trent Bridge international cricket ground are all based in or around the city, which is also the home of two professional football teams: Notts County, formerly the world's oldest professional league club, and Nottingham Forest, famously two-time winners of the UEFA European Cup under Brian Clough and Peter Taylor in 1979 and 1980. The city has professional rugby, ice hockey, and cricket teams, also hosting the Aegon Nottingham Open, an international tennis tournament on the ATP and WTA tours. This accolade came just over a year after Nottingham was named as the UK's first City of Football.

Nottingham's public transport system won awards prior to 2015, including the largest publicly owned bus network in England. The city is served by Nottingham railway station and the modern Nottingham Express Transit tram system. In December 2015, Nottingham was named a 'City of Literature' by UNESCO, joining Dublin, Edinburgh, Melbourne, and Prague as one of only a handful in the world. The title reflects Nottingham's literary heritage, with Lord Byron, D. H. Lawrence, and Alan Sillitoe having links to the city, as well as a contemporary literary community, a publishing industry, and a poetry scene. The city is served by three universities—the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University, and the Nottingham campus of the University of Law—hosting the highest concentration of higher education providers in the East Midlands. Ecology
Within the city, native wildlife includes red fox, peregrine falcon and common kingfisher.[35] Notable nature reserves around the city include Attenborough Nature Reserve SSSI, Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, Holme Pit SSSI, Fairham Brook Local Wildlife Site and Wollaton Park. Due to its position as a central city with strong transport links, Nottingham has become home to invasive animal and plant species including rose-ringed parakeet, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam. #nottinghammap #nottingham

In this travel vlog, I travelled by train from London to Didcot and took a bus to Oxford for a relaxed and super fun weekend. This trip was filled with laughter, food and cheeky banter.
In this vlog I showed the best things to do, what to eat, must visit restaurants and the hidden city gems Like Helen's secret passage , Oxford's oldest pub, Turf Tavern, Radcliffe Camera, Bodleian Library, Oxford Botanic Garden and must eats!

The trip took about 1hr and I spent approximately 24 hours exploring the best of Oxford (so you use this as a guide for a day trip)and I spent the rest of the trip relaxing at my amazing hotel, Courtyard by Marriot, South Oxford.

Here is my itinerary for you to try if you are ever in Oxford. It can also be used by solo travellers. I didn't cover every single thing as it was supposed to be a very relaxed trip but for sure I would be back here for a longer stay.

I hope you enjoy watching my vlog. Please remember to LIKE, SHARE, COMMENT AND SUBSCRIBE

173 Narrowboat Life off Grid Living Completing the Trent and Mersey and onto pastures new!

Still on the Trent and Mersey canal we leave the interesting port of Shardlow with its salt warehouse by the lock renovated in 1979 and now a popular pub.
We pass through Derwent Lock, the last/first lock on the Trent and Mersey Canal and onto the River Trent, ticking off another canal completed!
The junction to the River Soar/Erewash Canal is 2 and half miles ahead, we pass under the M1 motorway Bridge, Sawley Cut and Sawley Locks heading towards the complicated junction. Dominating the sky line here are the eight cooling towers of Radcliffe Power Station.

Passing the junctions to the Erewash Canal and The continuation of the River Trent via Trent Lock, we turn left here onto the River Soar a completely new navigation to us!
We pass through Redhill Flood lock and the Radcliffe Power station and head south on what is known as the Loughborough Navigation.
We just about make it through Kegworth Deep lock as the gates are not aligning properly and the Canal and River Trust are investigating the cause.
We finally moor up just above Zouch Lock after a long days cruising.

Places to see in ( West Bridgford - UK )

Places to see in ( West Bridgford - UK )

West Bridgford is a town in the Rushcliffe borough of Nottinghamshire, England, immediately south of the city of Nottingham, delimited by the River Trent. It forms a continuous urban area with Nottingham, effectively making it a suburb of the city; this helped lead to it being chosen as the location of the administrative centre for Nottinghamshire County Council. The population of the town at the 2011 census was 47,109.

As part of the Rushcliffe constituency its MP is The Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke, QC (Conservative Party). The headquarters of Nottinghamshire County Council moved to the town in 1959 from the traditional county town of Nottingham. The town is enclosed by the A52 and the River Trent.

Most of the main roads in central West Bridgford are named after wealthy families that dominated the town's early history. There are also, however, new developments that are, in effect, suburbs of the suburb named after different things. For example, the Gamston development has roads named after the Lake District, and Compton Acres has roads named after Dorset and the Purbeck Coast.

There are no 'Streets' in West Bridgford. When the town was being planned in the Victorian period, the roads were originally named as streets: for example, Musters Street and South Street. However, the planners eventually decided that the term 'Street' was too urban, so today the town has Musters Road and South Road.

West Bridgford is notably different from the other suburbs of Nottingham in a variety of ways. During the Victorian period, Nottingham was growing rapidly, but development in West Bridgford was restricted, as much of the land was owned by the Musters family.

Nottingham Express Transit, a light rail system opened in Nottingham in 2004, runs from Hucknall in the north to Nottingham railway station and onwards to Clifton in the south or Toton/Chilwell in the west. Plans were made to include West Bridgford in future phases of the project. Analysis by the joint City Council project has determined it unlikely that the centre of West Bridgford will be part of further evolution of the tram line: it now extends south of the Trent to Clifton along the route of the former Great Central Main Line, which forms part of the boundary of Nottingham and West Bridgford. As the city boundary runs to the immediate west of the line the three stations on this part of the route (Wilford Lane, Compton Acres, Ruddington Lane) are in West Bridgford, and serve western parts of West Bridgford, which opened in August 2015. Extensive bus services frequently serve most of the town.

Several bridges across the River Trent allow access to the city of Nottingham. The access to Nottingham has been an aspect of the popularity of West Bridgford as a suburb.

Trent bridge
A road bridge with three lanes in both directions. It is highly decorated on the sides with carvings that can be seen from the river.

Wilford Suspension Bridge
A bicycle and pedestrian bridge to the west of Trent Bridge, linking the town with The Meadows, Nottingham.

Wilford Toll Bridge
Since August 2015 this bridge carries part of the tram route (Nottingham Express Transit) connecting Clifton, Nottingham, Ruddington and Compton Acres suburb of West Bridgford to the centre of Nottingham and beyond. The small suburb of Silverdale is served by the adjacent ring road. The tram passes by the Becket school and travels through Compton Acres into Clifton.

Lady Bay Bridge
A two-lane road bridge, originally the rail crossing for the Midland Railway's alternative route from London to Nottingham via Melton Mowbray. Despite passing right through the middle of West Bridgford, mostly on a high embankment, there was never a West Bridgford station: the nearest station on this line was at Edwalton, and even that closed in July 1941, the line itself in May 1967.

The northern boundary of West Bridgford is the River Trent, spanned by two road bridges, Trent Bridge and Lady Bay Bridge, and two pedestrianised bridges consisting of a suspension bridge and a toll bridge near the Ferry Inn linking nearby Wilford village with the Meadows area of Nottingham city. The pedestrianised bridges link particularly well with cycling routes to Nottingham, the railway station and the university areas, making several rapid, safe, car-free routes available.

( West Bridgford - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting West Bridgford . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in West Bridgford - UK

JANE AUSTEN ROAD TRIP (PART 1)

JANE AUSTEN ROAD TRIP (PART 1)// Hello lovely people, We're so excited to walk in the shoes of Jane Austen today and share a little Jane Austen road trip in Hampshire with you. We visit places like Steventon where she was born and grew up. Her father was rector at St. Nicholas church and we were so lucky that the church was open! It's such a beautiful place!

After that we visited Deane where her father was rector at All Saints Church and where you will find Deane House, a beautiful country house where Jane visited often to see her friends, the Harwoods.
We will also share the tiny village of Ashe where the Austens became friends with the Lefroy family who moved into the rectory there. It was Madam Lefroy who inspired Jane to write.

The highlight is our visit to Chawton House where her brother Edward lived and where Jane would go whenever he was there. She lived at Chawton Cottage with her mother and sister Cassandra. Chawton Cottage was her final home and here she wrote 6 of her wonderful novels, the exquisite 'Pride & Prejudice' being one of them.

We hope you will like this video and we can't wait to go on a second Jane Austen road trip to film part 2. Have a lovely weekend. Kirsten & Joerg

Frilford Dog Leg Junction Oxford Travel News Favorite

The Frilford Dog Leg always appears in the Oxfordshire Traffic news, most recently because of floods in Marcham. Traffic sometimes queues back from the pinch point in Marcham Villages where lorries get stuck or even all the way back from the A34. Dog Leg Junctions are notoriously dangerous fortunately Frilford's is fully traffic lighted. There is a very useful and popular Garage shop and petrol station.

The former General Ironside's HQ Red Stop Line cuts across the road here at this junction. Just down the Road behind the former Noah's Ark Pub lies the site of a Romano-British Temple and a Saxon graveyard.

The junction is busy as it carries traffic trying to get to the A34 at Abingdon. Also from Wantage to Oxford and people travelling to Witney via Newbridge. Frilford has one other claim to fame it was one of the first villages to be by-passed.

Netherfield Station 29/9/20

Netherfield Station is located on the outskirts of Nottingham on the railway between Nottingham and Skegness known as the Poacher Line as well as being on part of the route shared with services between Liverpool/Manchester and Norwich before branching off at Grantham.

The Poacher line leaves Nottingham before heading towards Grantham where it runs alongside the East Coast Mainline before trains reverse and head out east of Grantham and into open fenland, as the latter part of the line between Grantham and Skegness is very rural there are only a few stations that see a regular train services with all the others seeing about 2 trains a day in each direction but also despite Netherfield being a very urban area the station only also sees a few trains a day.

East Midlands Railway operate the route and all services on it using Class 153/156 Sprinter Units which are due to be replaced with Class 170 units at some point during 2021.
