Haridwar is an ancient city and important Hindu pilgrimage site in North India's Uttarakhand state, where the River Ganges exits the Himalayan foothills. The largest of several sacred ghats (bathing steps), Har Ki Pauri hosts a nightly Ganga Aarti (river-worshipping ceremony) in which tiny flickering lamps are floated off the steps. Worshipers fill the city during major festivals including the annual Kanwar Mela

1- har ki pauri - Har Ki Pauri is a major landmark place and a famous ghat on the banks of river Ganga in Haridwar. A center place of attraction among devotees in Haridwar, Har ki Pauri is believed to be the place of exit of holy river Ganga from the mountains.
World famous Ganga Aarti takes place in Brahmakund area of Har ki Pauri, a sacred spot where it is believe that the nectar (Amrit) felled on earth. Biggest fairs of Hindu's, Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh also takes place at Har ki Pauri.
2- Chandi Devi Temple - चण्डी देवी मंदिर is a Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Chandi Devi in the holy city of Haridwar in the Uttarakhand state of India. The temple is situated atop the Neel Parvat on the Eastern summit of the Sivalik Hills, the southernmost mountain chain of the Himalayas. Chandi Devi Temple was built in 1929 by Suchat Singh in his reign as the King of Kashmir.
3 - Rajaji National Park - Rajaji National Park is an Indian national park and tiger reserve[1] that encompasses the Shivaliks, near the foothills of the Himalayas. The park is spread over 820 km .and three districts of Uttarakhand: Haridwar, Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal. In 1983, three wildlife sanctuaries in the area namely, Chilla, Motichur and Rajaji sanctuaries were merged into one. The Ganga and Song rivers flow through the park.
4- Mansa Devi Temple - Mata Mansa Devi is a Hindu temple dedicated to goddess Mansa Devi, a form of Shakti, in the Panchkula district of Haryana state in India. The temple complex is spread of 100 acres .
5- Bharat Mata Temple - Bharat Mata Mandir, popularly known as the Mother India Temple, is a noted religious site in Haridwar. This temple is devoted to Bharat Mata and was constructed by the famous religious guru, Swami Satyamitranand Giri. The late Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, inaugurated this temple in 1983.
6- shantikunj - Shantikunj is the headquarters of the spiritual and social organisation All World Gayatri Pariwar. Established in 1971 at Haridwar .
7- Pawan dham- Pawan Dham, an ancient temple in Haridwar located at Bhagirathi Nagar, Bhupatwala, is a non-profit organization and a revered site among Hindu pilgrims.
8- Daksh Mahadev temple - दक्षेश्वर महादेव मन्दिर or Daksha Mahadev temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the town of Kankhal, about 4 km from Haridwar, Uttarakhand, India. It is named after King Daksha Prajapati, the father of Sati.[1] Daksha is one of the fourteen Prajapatis, creator deities, who preside over procreation and are the protector of life in Hindu mythology.
9- Patanjali Yogpeeth - Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, is one of the largest yoga institutes in India, possibly the whole world. Named after the Rishi Patanjali, the institute is Baba Ramdev's flagship project. Its purpose is to practise and research and develop yoga and ayurveda, as well as manufacture ayurvedic medicines. It is also the home of the University of Patanjali. Acharya Balkrishna is the General Secretary of Patanjali Yogpeeth.
10- anandamayi ashram - Anandamayi Ashram is a spiritually uplifting place built in the memory of Sri Ma Anadamayi. She was born on April 30, 1896. Ma Anandamayi was a Bengoli mystic and an eminent spiritual personality hailed by many. When the venerated lady departed on August 27, 1982, a Samadhi was built to honour her peaceful existence.

Haridwar Old name Mayapuri is a city and municipal corporation in the Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, India. With a population of 228,832 in 2011, it is the second-largest city in the state and the largest in the district.
The city is situated on the right bank of the Ganges river, at the foothills of the Shivalik ranges. Haridwar is regarded as a holy place for Hindus, hosting important religious events and serving as a gateway to several prominent places of worship. Most significant of the events is the Kumbha Mela, which is celebrated every 12 years in Haridwar. During the Haridwar Kumbh Mela, millions of pilgrims, devotees, and tourists congregate in Haridwar to perform ritualistic bathing on the banks of the Ganges to wash away their sins to attain moksha.
According to Puranic legend, Haridwar, along with Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayag, is one of four sites where drops of amrita, the elixir of immortality, accidentally spilled over from a kumbha (pitcher) while being carried by the celestial bird Garuda during the Samudra Manthana, or the churning of the ocean of milk. Brahma Kund, the spot where the amrita fell, is believed to be located at Har ki Pauri (literally, footsteps of the Lord) and is considered to be the most sacred ghat of Haridwar. It is also the primary centre of the Kanwar pilgrimage, in which millions of participants gather sacred water from the Ganges and carry it across hundreds of miles to dispense as offerings in Shiva shrines. Today, the city is developing beyond its religious importance with the fast-developing industrial estate of the State Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand (SIDCUL), and the close by township of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), as well as its affiliated ancillaries.
Haridwar presents a kaleidoscope of Indian culture and development. In sacred writings, it has been differently specified as Kapilsthan, Gangadwar and Mayapuri. It is additionally a passage for the Chota Char Dham (the four principal pilgrim destinations in Uttarakhand). Subsequently, Shaivites (devotees of Shiva) and Vaishavites (devotees of Vishnu) call the city Hardwar and Haridwar, respectively, Har meaning Shiva and Hari, Vishnu.

Also known as the 'Abode of Drona' Dehradun has been an important center for Garhwal rulers and was captured by the British. For its strategic value, in addition to the location of its principal service academy, the Indian Armed Forces maintain a considerable presence in Dehradun, at the Garhi Cantonment and Naval Station. The Uttarakhand Police is the primary law enforcement agency in the city.
It is well connected and in proximity to Himalayan tourist destinations such as Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Chakrata, New Tehri, Uttarkashi, Harsil, Chopta-Tungnath, Auli, and famous summer and winter hiking destinations like the Valley of Flowers at Dodital, Dayara Bugyal, Kedarkantha, Har Ki Dun and Hemkunt Sahib for camping and Himalayan panoramic views. Welcome to Haridwar, a popular pilgrimage destination in Uttarakhand where devotees throng to seek divine blessings by taking a dip in the holy Ganges. This sacred city has some great street food that keeps the masses active and going. We were there to explore the street food scene in these busy lanes. Our host for the day was Mr. Jain who is the owner of the famous Jain Chat Bhandar. We are highly grateful for his support. An avid foodie and a genial gentleman, Mr. Jain took us on an immersive walk down the streets guiding us about the popular eats.
We started with the famous Surya Ki Dal. It's morning time and a crowd had gathered to buy a plate of this nutritious snacks. It was a boiled moong dal dish that has been spiced up with some spices. Eating it out of leaf plate added to the taste.
Next was the turn of a very old sweet shop that specializes in traditional sweets like milk cake, lauki ka lauj, khoya burfi, rabri etc. We were impressed by the quality and taste of these popular fares.
From there we went to Bhagwati Chole Bhandar for tasting the adda and chole ka paani. Adda is bun soaked in Chole ki sabzi. They serve it with chutney, ginger julienne, fresh coriander. The snack was followed by the channe ka pani which is a spicy yet hearty broth made from the leftover water from the boiled chickpeas.
We crossed over to the opposite side for Paan, in order to cleanse our palette and prime them for more food. Then we went to Thakur Raghubir Sigh ji kachoriwala for khasta kachori and sabji. Served in leaf bowl, it was a treat. But their kheer mohan was too sweet for us.
We then took a Nimbu shikanji break at Shiv Soda before arriving at Mathura wale ki prachin dukan for their delicious puri sabzi platter. The desi ghee fare consisting urad dal puri, pumpkin and potato sabzi was quite gratifying. We followed it with tiny potli samosas and chandrakala.
Our next shop was the famous eatery of our host. Jain Ji is loved not only for his playful treats but also for his genial personality. We were touched by the endearing manner in which he introduced us to his bestsellers. People are crazy about his kanji vada, magic chaat and dahi patashe and so are we. The best part of the eating experience here was the malu leaf bowls in which these dishes were served.
Our next target was Mathura Wale Ke malai samosa, rabri and chocolate burfi. The khoya stuffed malai samosa and rabri were simply toothsome. The chocolate burfi had the taste of real chocolate.
While walking towards our next stop Har Ki Pauri ghat-for Ganga Arti-we stopped by a cart selling star fruits and couldn’t resist ourselves from taking a bite of this nutritious fruit. The sour ones are rich in vitamins.
Soon it was time to witness the marvellous aarti or prayer ritual where the holy Ganges river is worshipped with mantras and huge lamps. The vibe of the collective faith of the devotees thronging the ghat was a surreal experience.
After this divine encounter we went to Guru Vaisnav bhojnalaya for a proper traditional meal consisting of roti, rice, dal, seasonal vegetable preparation, papad and raita. We enjoyed every morsel of this home styled desi ghee meal that was prepared over wood fire stove.
After filling our stomach with all the goodness of the wholesome meal, it was time to grab a glass of hot milk and call it a day. Haridwar surprised us with its delightful treats and its friendly locals. Do make time for visit to this city and soak in its spiritual and culinary atmosphere. Food is one of the most important attributes of any city that completes the overall experience of the place. After all other activities, one needs to fuel oneself for latter pursuits. And if you are a foodie then that is exactly what you travel for. Hence for this episode we are at Dehradun the capital of Uttarakhand to explore the gastronomic scene on the streets that is filled with quaint natural beauty, smiling faces and remnants of an intriguing bygone era.
Located in the Doon valley between river Ganges on the east and Yamuna on the west, the city is famous for its pretty landscape and pleasant climate. It provides a gateway to the popular tourist destinations such as Mussoorie, Auli and the holy cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh etc. For this exploration, we are super elated and fortunate to be guided by celebrated anthropologist, cultural activist and flaneur par excellence. He is the founder of Been There Doon That, that conducts curated walking tours across the city.
We started with the traditional meal platter at Chetan Puri wala at Hanuman chowk which was served on leaf plated. The homely spread consisted of puris, chole, potato curry and raita. Their assortment of ladoos made with desi ghee is another hot favourite among the locals.
Next we ambled down the historic streets lined with old havelis and mansions to have an interesting thing called Katlamme at Mamaji Katlamme wala at Purani Sabzi mandi. Katlamme is a frontier dish that is exclusively available in Dehradun. It is essentially a big sized deep fried crisp flatbread that is eaten with a spicy chole and pickles. This closer cousin of Bhature is a craze with the locals.
Our next stop was kachori bhalle stall where we tried a unique and zesty snacks that comprised of crushed Khasta kachori and fried lentil vada topped with chole sabzi and grated radish. No wonder with all the yummy things it turns out to be a popular fare.
Lokesh Ji then took us to Bengali Sweet shop to try a quintessential sweet of the state, the Baal Mithai. This chocolate-like fudge is made from khoya, sugar and dry fruits. It has a unique smoky taste that comes from the caramelizing of the khoya.
Next stop was Sunrise Bakery a name that the city reckons with when it comes to bakery items. Here we tried some of their popular items like rusk, Pista biscuit, patties, Plum cake and cream rolls. Continuing with our sweet pursuits we reached Kumar sweet shop. Here we were intrigued by the exciting taste of Bottle Gourd ladoos and Kaju Paan.
Soon after that we arrived at another popular fast food joint named Joshi Fast food centre whose momo are highly recommended for their fresh and irresistible taste. It is a craze among the young crowd. We also shared a heartwarming conversation with the owner of the place.
The pleasant gastronomic trail was halted by a sudden downpour but after that we gorged on an irresistible plate of Pakodas and bun samosa.
Our ultimate stop was Vicky Bun tikki wala where we tried Dehradun’s signature street side dish Bun Tikki. It wasn’t just a delicious snack but a harbinger of nostalgia and emotions for Anubhav. Watch the video to know the connection.
