Brașov Romania - Must Visit Attractions & Best Things To Do

Fringed by the peaks of the Southern Carpathian Mountains and resplendent with gothic, baroque and renaissance architecture, as well as a wealth of historical attractions, Brasov is one of the most visited places in Romania.

#Brasov #BrasovRomania #Romania - @RomaniaTouristOffice

Brasov Downtown Founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1211 on an ancient Dacian site and settled by the Saxons as one of the seven walled citadels*, Brasov exudes a distinct medieval ambiance and has been used as backdrop in many recent period films.

The location of the city at the intersection of trade routes linking the Ottoman Empire and western Europe, together with certain tax exemptions, allowed Saxon merchants to obtain considerable wealth and exert a strong political influence in the region.

This was reflected in the city's German name, Kronstadt, as well as in its Latin name, Corona, meaning Crown City hence, the coat of arms of the city which is a crown with oak roots. Fortifications were erected around the city and continually expanded, with several towers maintained by different craft guilds, according to medieval custom.

Brasov is home to one of the the narrowest streets in Europe.
The Rope Street Strada Sforii is approximately four feet wide;
it connects Strada Cerbului with Strada Poarta Schei
This street was initially used as an access route by firefighters.

Stroll around the old Town Hall Square Piata Sfatului where you can admire colorfully painted and ornately trimmed baroque structures. Take a peek inside the Black Church Biserica Neagra, the largest gothic church in Romania.

Its name derives from damage caused by the Great Fire of 1689, when flames and smoke blackened its walls. The interior is impressive and well-kept and houses one of the largest organs in Eastern Europe.

Nearby are towering mountains, rolling fields, thick forests and villages with fortified churches.

* The seven walled citadels populated by the Saxons of Transylvania were known in German as the Siebenbürgen.

The other Siebenbürgen citadels were: Bistrita Bistritz, Cluj Klausenburg, Medias Mediasch ,
Sebes Mühlbach , Sibiu Hermannstadt , Sighisoara Schässburg

The Council Square - Piata Sfatului
Brasov DowntownThe Saxons built massive stone walls and seven bastions around the city that are still visible today, as well as ornate churches, elaborately trimmed buildings and one of the finest central squares in the country, said to be the spot to which the legendary Pied Piper led the children of Hamlin.

The Old Town Hall - Casa Sfatului
Built in the 13th century, the house served as meeting place for the town councilors, known as centurions. On top of the building sits the Trumpeter's Tower, used during the Middle Ages as a watchtower for warning the citadel inhabitants of approaching danger. Today, the old city hall houses the Brasov History Museum.

The Black Church Biserica Neagra
Brasov's famous landmark and Romania's leading gothic church, the Black Church towers over the Council Square and the old town.

Built between 1385 and 1477 on the site of an earlier church (destroyed by Mongol invasions in 1242), the construction of the Marienkirche, as it was known in German, was hampered by extensive damage caused by Turkish raids in 1421.

The church was given its new name after disaster struck again in 1689, when the Great Fire leveled most of the town, blackening the walls of the church. Restoration took almost 100 years. Of two towers planned, only one was finished.

The Black Church is the largest gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul.

The Black Church boasts the largest church bell in Romania, weighing in at seven tons.

Brasov's Defensive Fortifications
Ever since Saxon settlers arrived in the early 12th century, invading Mongols, Turks and others gave them a tough time, repeatedly destroying the old settlements of Bartholoma and Corona. Thereafter, the Saxons set themselves to building fortifications around their town.

Most work was done between 1400 and 1650, when outer and inner walls were erected, together with massive defense towers and gates. Part of the defensive wall, once 40 feet high, seven feet thick and two miles long, can still be seen today, though most was taken down in the 19th century to make room for the city's expansion.

Tampa Mountain (Muntele Tampa)
Brasov is often referred to as the city at the foot of Mount Tampa.
Above the Weavers' Bastion, along the southeastern side of the fortress walls, there is an alley (Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu), shaded by old trees and dotted with benches. From here, one can hike to the top of Tampa Mountain, where the original defensive fortress was built.
When Vlad Tepes (the Impaler) attacked Brasov in 1458-60, the citadel was destroyed'

00:37 București or Bucharest is the capital and largest city of Romania. It is described as the cultural, financial, entertainment, and media center in Romania with a significant influence in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. It is also an influence in education, tourism, research, technology, health care, art, fashion, sports, and politics in Romania. It is one of the most populated cities of the European Union (EU) within city limits and the most populated capital in South-Eastern Europe.

09:45 Brașov is a city in Transylvania, Romania and the administrative centre of Brașov County. According to the latest Romanian census, Brașov has a population of 253,000 making it the 7th most populous city in Romania. The metropolitan area is home to 380000 residents. Historically, the city was the center of the Burzenland, once dominated by the Transylvanian Saxons, and a significant commercial hub on the trade roads between Austria and Turkey. It is also where the national anthem of Romania was first sung.

20:00 Bran Castle or Castelul Bran is a castle in Bran, 25 kilometres southwest of Brașov city in Romania. It is a national monument and landmark in Transylvania. The fortress is on the Transylvanian side of the historical border with Wallachia. Commonly known outside Transylvania as Dracula's Castle, it is marketed as the home of the title character in Bram Stoker's Dracula. There is no evidence that Stoker knew anything about this castle, which has only tangential associations with Vlad the Impaler, voivode of Wallachia, who shares his name with Dracula. Stoker's description of Dracula's crumbling fictional castle also bears no resemblance to Bran Castle. The castle is now a museum dedicated to displaying art and furniture collected by Queen Marie.

26:35 Peleș Castle is a Neo-Renaissance castle in the Carpathian Mountains, near Sinaia, in Prahova County, Romania, on an existing medieval route linking Transylvania and Wallachia, built between 1873 and 1914. Its inauguration was held in 1883. It was constructed for King Carol I. Peles Castle is the second-most visited castle in Romania and is arguably one of the prettiest castles in all of Europe. It has beautifully manicured gardens and 168 rooms filled with grand designs inspired by countries around the world. It’s a royal abode and summer family home that showcases paintings, sculptures, rare books, and an array of collectibles.

35:40 The Therme Bucharest is a wellness and relaxation complex with its 10 pools (indoor and outdoor), 6 dry saunas, 4 wet saunas, 16 water slides, pool bars, cafes, restaurants and more. Therme Bucharest is the largest Therme in Europe, with an indoor capacity of 4,000 visitors simultaneously. Moreover, with over 880,000 plants, on a total area of 18,000 square meters, Therme Bucharest has the largest indoor and outdoor botanical garden in Romania. Its three restaurants have a total capacity of 800 seats.

Incredible ROMANIAN Road Trip | Visiting Brasov, Rasnov, and the world’s largest bear sanctuary!

Welcome back to our Romanian road trip series! Today we are back on the road and visiting Brasov, Rasnov, and the world's largest bear sanctuary!

Our first stop of the day is at Libearty Bear Sanctuary, the world's largest bear sanctuary. The tour began with a heartbreaking short video explaining why this sanctuary was started and their future goals. Romania is home to 60 percent of Europe’s brown bear population and Libearty has rescued over 130 bears from an abusive life in small cages. Many of them were kept behind bars near restaurants, hotels, and gas stations as tourist attractions. Most of these bears are unable to return to the wilderness because they have spent their entire life in captivity. It was a sad and eye opening tour but definitely a place worth supporting!

We continued on to visit Rasnov Fortress. It is set high on the hilltop above the quaint town of Rasnov. The fortress has a great medieval feel and also offers a funicular ride to get up the very steep hill.

Since our Airbnb was located in Brasov, we decided to explore it at the end of the day after we had checked in. Brasov is an incredibly charming and historical city. We would say it is an excellent place to base yourself when you visit the Transylvanian region!

Thanks for watching! We would love for you to like, comment, and subscribe if you enjoyed this video!

JTS | Rasnov Medieval Citadel | Visit Romania

About Rasnov - Romania - It was once part of the saxon region called Burzenland. However, the city is much older, dating from Thracian-Roman times. It is home to a freshly restored Saxon fortress from the 14th century, and also to many old Saxon houses. In German the name of the town is Rosenau, which means rose meadow. There are about 15,000 inhabitants who live right next to a huge forest that leads up the mountains. The river Ghimbasel (german: Burzen) crosses the town. Those who rush through Brasov county, stop by to see the fortress, but many people take the time to stay here for a few days and enjoy its blend of nature and fun.
Râșnov Citadel (Romanian: Cetatea Râșnov, German: Rosenauer Burg) is a historic monument and landmark in Romania. It is situated in Râşnov, Brașov County, in the immediate vicinity of Brașov.
The citadel was built as part of a defence system for the Transylvanian villages exposed to outside invasions. A decisive aspect for building the citadel on the actual location was the route of the invading armies which were coming from the Bran pass and were passing through Râșnov, on their way to Burzenland. The only chance of survival for the inhabitants of the area, inclusively from Cristian and Ghimbav, was the refuge inside the citadel. Compelled to stay there for decades, the people of Râșnov and the nearby villages turned the fortification into a dwelling.
