Splendidly well-groomed Prenzlauer Berg is one of Berlin's most charismatic residential neighbourhoods, filled with cafes, historic buildings and indie boutiques. It's a joy to explore on foot. On Sundays, the world descends on its Mauerpark for flea marketeering, summertime karaoke and chilling in the sun. It's easily combined with a visit to the quarter's main sightseeing attraction, the Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer, an engrossing 1.4km-long exhibit that explains how the Berlin Wall shaped the city.
From the 1960s onward, Prenzlauer Berg was associated with proponents of East Germany's diverse counterculture including Christian activists, bohemians, state-independent artists, and the gay community. It was an important site for the peaceful revolution that brought down the Berlin Wall in 1989. In the 1990s the borough was also home to a vibrant squatting scene. It has since experienced rapid gentrification. Prenzlauer Berg is a portion of the Pankow district in northeast Berlin. To the West and Southwest it borders Mitte, to the South Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, to the East Lichtenberg, and to the North Weißensee and Pankow.
Geologically, the borough straddles the southernmost edge of the Barnim glacial deposit formed during the last Ice Age. Prenzlauer Berg (literally Prenzlau Hill) was always seen as a hill by the inhabitants of historic Berlin situated to the South in the glacial valley along the river Spree. Until the 20th century the area was mostly referred to as Windmill Hill. Today the highest point of the district is 91 meters above sea level in the northwest of Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg. This hill consists of the rubble from the countless houses that were destroyed in World War II during allied air raids and by Soviet artillery in the Battle of Berlin.
Prenzlauer Berg is characterized by Wilhelmine buildings, that were erected at the turn of the 20th century (1889 to 1905). Over 80% of all housing in this area was constructed before 1948, with the oldest building still standing being from 1848 at 77 Kastanienallee. Though substantial, there was less war-related destruction here than in other parts of the city, which were almost entirely wiped out by the allied bombing campaign.
Apart from the apartment buildings in the area around Ostseestraße built in the 1950s, characterized by the architectural style of Socialist Classicism, the borough was mostly left alone by Socialist city planners until the 1980s when prestigious high rise buildings were built in Ernst-Thälmann-Park.
Today, Prenzlauer Berg forms a nearly homogeneous historic building area. Over 300 buildings remain protected as historic monuments, like the municipal swimming pool at Oderberger Straße and the breweries on Milastraße and Knaackstraße. The borough is famous for its restaurants and bars. Although places that provide a truly traditional Berlin staple are few and far between, there is a vast array of restaurants offering Arab, Turkish, Vietnamese, Tex-Mex, and Italian cuisine, especially around Kastanienalle, Kollwitzplatz, and Helmholtzplatz. The nightlife concentrates around the U-Bahn station Eberswalder Straße. The area around the intersections of Schönhauser Allee, Danziger Straße, Eberswalder Straße, Kastanienallee and Pappelallee has been associated with youth culture since the 1950s and was immortalised in the DEFA film Ecke Schönhauser.

- - Prenzlauer Berg (Prenzlau Hill - or Prenzlau Slope as I like to call it in reference to the very similar Park Slope in Brooklyn that we've been calling home since 2001) is a neighborhood in the former East of Berlin. We got an apartment here in May 2011. At that point it wasn't our favorite neighborhood, despite it having been the neighborhood we imagined living in when we first thought about moving to Berlin.
By now I cherish the entire neighborhood, but especially the area around our apartment. You can read more about my view of Prenzlauer Berg in the Berlin Portrait series on the überlin blog, which published a portrait of me and my thoughts about my Kiez.
Prenzlauer Berg has a lot more to offer than what I'm showing in this video. But you know, one minute is short. Here you'll see the water tower, the tree-lined streets, balconies on Oderberger Strasse, Gethsemanekirche, the book tree, Helmholtzplatz, the pirate ship, a dragon water pump, Kulturbrauerei (culture brewery), planetarium, Schwarz Sauer and Kastanienallee, Eberswalder Strasse subway station, Konnopke's Currywurst Imbiss (city's oldest currywurst stand), Pratergarten (Berlin's oldest beer garden), street art by El Bocho and by JR (Wrinkles Of The City), Pappelrocks and golden hour at Mauerpark.

Mit dem Fahrrad durch die Uckermark
Ursprünglich war geplant den 155 Kilometer langen Wanderweg der Uckermärker Landrunde mit dem Fahrrad zu fahren. Es sollte von Angermünde über Templin nach Lychen gehen und dann nach Prenzlau und wieder zurück nach Angermünde. Das Wetter hat uns da aber einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht und so musste wir die Strecke etwas kürzen. Aber am Ende war es auch so eine sehr schöne Tour.

02.07.2020 // Am Tag 13 ging es von Prenzlau über Angermünde, Hohensaaten, Hohenwutzen in die Nähe von Neulewin, wo wir wild campten.
Wir durchfuhren die Uckermark und folgten dem Radweg Berlin-Usedom.
Unterwegs gab es eine Einkehr in Doritas Gartenbistro. Später war dann der Oder-Neiße-Radweg unser Begleiter, an dem wir zu Etappenende im Lokal Fuchsbau in Hohenwutzen Einkehr hielten.

Prenzlauer Allee is a major avenue in the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin, and one of the main thoroughfares of the north-eastern Pankow borough. The arterial road connects the centre of former East Berlin at Alexanderplatz via Karl-Liebknecht-Straße with the far north-eastern districts and the orbital motorway Berliner Ring (BAB 10) via the Bundesautobahn 114.
It starts at Prenzlauer Tor, formerly the site of a historic city gate on the road to Prenzlau, leading uphill northwards to the border with the Pankow district, where it continues as Prenzlauer Promenade. In between the dual carriageway run the tracks of the Berlin tram M2 line. The Ringbahn of the Berlin S-Bahn network stops at Berlin Prenzlauer Allee station.
The road was used early on as a long-distance trade route to Prenzlau, hence its later name. Until about 1824 it was called Heinersdorfer Weg; Heinersdorf was the first village on the road outside Berlin. With the design and planning by Salomo Sachs and the approval of a new building on 3 December 1824, it was named Prenzlauer Chaussee and from 1878 was finally elevated to Allee. A newly founded stock corporation and the Prussian government implemented Sachs' plans.

Friedrichstraße is Berlin’s north-south axis and runs in a straight line through Mitte and Kreuzberg. You can stroll and shop here, visit the famous Checkpoint Charlie border crossing or one of the theatres.
There are many new buildings such as the Friedrichstadtpassagen with designer boutiques, offices and restaurants. Quartier 207 contains the department stores Les Galeries Lafayette with French fashion, lifestyle accessories and a delicatessen department with specialities from France. Designed by the architect Jean Nouvel, it has an impressive transparent glass façade and an atrium that narrows towards the ground. The neighbouring Quartier 206, where you can shop in elegant designer boutiques, is built in the extravagant Art Déco style.

Prenzlauer Allee is a major avenue in the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin, and one of the main thoroughfares of the north-eastern Pankow borough.
The arterial road connects the centre of former East Berlin at Alexanderplatz via Karl-Liebknecht-Straße with the far north-eastern districts and the orbital motorway Berliner Ring (BAB 10) via the Bundesautobahn 114.
It starts at Prenzlauer Tor, formerly the site of a historic city gate on the road to Prenzlau, leading uphill northwards to the border with the Pankow district, where it continues as Prenzlauer Promenade.
In between the dual carriageway run the tracks of the Berlin tram M2 line. The Ringbahn of the Berlin S-Bahn network stops at Berlin Prenzlauer Allee station.
