Brașov Romania - Must Visit Attractions & Best Things To Do

Fringed by the peaks of the Southern Carpathian Mountains and resplendent with gothic, baroque and renaissance architecture, as well as a wealth of historical attractions, Brasov is one of the most visited places in Romania.

#Brasov #BrasovRomania #Romania - @RomaniaTouristOffice

Brasov Downtown Founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1211 on an ancient Dacian site and settled by the Saxons as one of the seven walled citadels*, Brasov exudes a distinct medieval ambiance and has been used as backdrop in many recent period films.

The location of the city at the intersection of trade routes linking the Ottoman Empire and western Europe, together with certain tax exemptions, allowed Saxon merchants to obtain considerable wealth and exert a strong political influence in the region.

This was reflected in the city's German name, Kronstadt, as well as in its Latin name, Corona, meaning Crown City hence, the coat of arms of the city which is a crown with oak roots. Fortifications were erected around the city and continually expanded, with several towers maintained by different craft guilds, according to medieval custom.

Brasov is home to one of the the narrowest streets in Europe.
The Rope Street Strada Sforii is approximately four feet wide;
it connects Strada Cerbului with Strada Poarta Schei
This street was initially used as an access route by firefighters.

Stroll around the old Town Hall Square Piata Sfatului where you can admire colorfully painted and ornately trimmed baroque structures. Take a peek inside the Black Church Biserica Neagra, the largest gothic church in Romania.

Its name derives from damage caused by the Great Fire of 1689, when flames and smoke blackened its walls. The interior is impressive and well-kept and houses one of the largest organs in Eastern Europe.

Nearby are towering mountains, rolling fields, thick forests and villages with fortified churches.

* The seven walled citadels populated by the Saxons of Transylvania were known in German as the Siebenbürgen.

The other Siebenbürgen citadels were: Bistrita Bistritz, Cluj Klausenburg, Medias Mediasch ,
Sebes Mühlbach , Sibiu Hermannstadt , Sighisoara Schässburg

The Council Square - Piata Sfatului
Brasov DowntownThe Saxons built massive stone walls and seven bastions around the city that are still visible today, as well as ornate churches, elaborately trimmed buildings and one of the finest central squares in the country, said to be the spot to which the legendary Pied Piper led the children of Hamlin.

The Old Town Hall - Casa Sfatului
Built in the 13th century, the house served as meeting place for the town councilors, known as centurions. On top of the building sits the Trumpeter's Tower, used during the Middle Ages as a watchtower for warning the citadel inhabitants of approaching danger. Today, the old city hall houses the Brasov History Museum.

The Black Church Biserica Neagra
Brasov's famous landmark and Romania's leading gothic church, the Black Church towers over the Council Square and the old town.

Built between 1385 and 1477 on the site of an earlier church (destroyed by Mongol invasions in 1242), the construction of the Marienkirche, as it was known in German, was hampered by extensive damage caused by Turkish raids in 1421.

The church was given its new name after disaster struck again in 1689, when the Great Fire leveled most of the town, blackening the walls of the church. Restoration took almost 100 years. Of two towers planned, only one was finished.

The Black Church is the largest gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul.

The Black Church boasts the largest church bell in Romania, weighing in at seven tons.

Brasov's Defensive Fortifications
Ever since Saxon settlers arrived in the early 12th century, invading Mongols, Turks and others gave them a tough time, repeatedly destroying the old settlements of Bartholoma and Corona. Thereafter, the Saxons set themselves to building fortifications around their town.

Most work was done between 1400 and 1650, when outer and inner walls were erected, together with massive defense towers and gates. Part of the defensive wall, once 40 feet high, seven feet thick and two miles long, can still be seen today, though most was taken down in the 19th century to make room for the city's expansion.

Tampa Mountain (Muntele Tampa)
Brasov is often referred to as the city at the foot of Mount Tampa.
Above the Weavers' Bastion, along the southeastern side of the fortress walls, there is an alley (Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu), shaded by old trees and dotted with benches. From here, one can hike to the top of Tampa Mountain, where the original defensive fortress was built.
When Vlad Tepes (the Impaler) attacked Brasov in 1458-60, the citadel was destroyed'

Prejmer Fortress: Romania's Hidden Tourist Gem

The Prejmer Fortress that houses the Fortified Church in the town is one of the best preserved fortifications in Europe, but also the oldest historical monument in Brasov. It is among the few that were not crushed by the Communists, but on the contrary. Even Nicolae Ceausescu gave money for its restoration.

The fortress was built in 1211 by the Teutonic Knights, in Gothic style and is listed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. In order to defend themselves against the Turkish invasions, the inhabitants of the settlement, originally from Saxony, built the walls of the Peasant Fortress in the 15th century.

The fortress has the shape of a circle that surrounds the Evangelical Church, 12 meters high walls and 3-4 meters thick. It was attacked 50 times by the Turks. It is said that the fortress fell once in the hands of the enemies, but only because they had come as friends, and after entering the city they became conquerors. Prejmer Fortress is the only tourist destination in Romania that has received three stars in the Michelin Green Guide for tourism.

PREJMER, ROMANIA 2022

PREJMER, FORTIFIED CHURCH OF ROMANIA

Prejmer Fortified Church - A UNESCO Heritage Site

A Roman Catholic Church turned Lutheran after Reformation, Prejmer Fortified Church was founded by the Germanic Teutonic Knights who started the construction in 1218, in Gothic style. Their work was completed in 1240 by the Cistercians, who took over after their expulsion in 1225.
The Church was strongly fortified in the 15th and 16th century and remained in one piece despite the numerous attacks of the invaders coming from Buzau Pass. Its 270 rooms found in the 5m-thick circular wall could sheltered up to 1600 villagers against an attack.
Prejmer is one of the 7 villages with fortified churches in Transylvania listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Romania, Brasov - The Dacian Temple, Ohaba Water Mill and Prejmer Citadel ( 3 stars Michelin )

Visit the village of Ohaba, where you can see an old #watermill which is still used nowadays by the locals and for those who still prefer the old way of grinding wheat. Continue your trip to the nearby village of #SincaVeche, where you can visit the cave temple, famous for being a mystical place where people used to come and pray. Because it has become more and more popular, this place is usually full of tourists who enter the caverns and experience, some say, unknown and invisible powers that give them chills.
Next, visit Sinca Noua where you will go on an easy 10-minutes hike to visit the Podul Ilii viaduct, which belongs to an abandoned railway track, and considered to be the biggest arched concrete viaduct in Romania.
#Prejmer is noted for its fortified church, one of the best preserved of its kind in Eastern Europe and the only one with 3 Michelin stars .

Brasov, Romania - Город Брашов (Romanian city Brasov)

Brasov city of Romania

Brasov is a mountain resort city in Transylvania, Romania. Brasov is one of the largest cities in Romania. It is located almost in the centre of the country and surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. Brașov, also known as Kronstadt in German or Brassó in Hungarian. The population of the city is 283,901 people.

The city provides a mix of wonderful mountain scenery in the nearby Poiana Braşov and medieval history with German influences in the old town. The city is 176 km from Bucharest.

Braşov is up there with Sinaia and the surrounding mountain resorts as the most visited city in Transylvania, Romania, and this is something that's not in vain. Braşov boasts everything from dynamic modern city life to old world charm and fascinating scenery. Also, it's pleasant to have some of the extras as well, including some of the best cleanliness records in the country, great transport and great food. Even though it's a bit overpriced for Romanian standards, especially in the high season, Braşov is definitely worth it. As some people say, Why bother coming to Romania if you're not going to see Braşov?

The Braşov county is one of the most visited by tourists. Other than Braşov city and its immediate attractions, the resorts of Poiana Braşov (12 km west) and Predeal (27 km south), are also well worth visiting. Other places and tourist attractions of the county: Bran, Moeciu, Râşnov, Făgăraş, Prejmer, Zărneşti, Sâmbăta (at the foot of the Făgăraş mountains).

Braşov has relatively cold and wet weather, especially at night. This region of Romania enjoys four seasons (i.e. spring and autumn as well as winter and summer). The average temperature is 7.6°C only, even though in summer temperatures may reach up to 35°C.

Due to fairly large minority populations, Hungarian and German are also spoken in addition to Romanian. Many locals also speak English.

1.Old Town
2.The Black Church
3.Town History Museum
4.Strada Sforii (Rope Street) - Narrowest street in Europe

6.The old Synagogue

Main attractions:
1.Biserica Sf. Nicolae
2.Biserica Sf. Treime

Romania Tourist Attractions (Brașov and Râșnov)

Brașov is a city in the Transylvania region of Romania, ringed by the Carpathian Mountains. It's known for its medieval Saxon walls and bastions, the towering Gothic-style Black Church and lively cafes. Piaţa Sfatului (Council Square) in the cobbled old town is surrounded by colorful baroque buildings and is home to the Casa Sfatului, a former town hall turned local history museum.
Râșnov is located at about 15 km from the city of Brașov and about the same distance from Bran, on the road that links Wallachia and Transylvania.
The city is rapidly developing towards an important tourism town, while new pensions and attractions are being developed. Those who rush through Brasov county, stop by to see the fortress, but many people take the time to stay here for a few days and enjoy its blend of nature and fun. Others choose it as a cheap and quiet base to explore the surrounding area with its numerous attractions (Brasov, Sinaia, Bran, Zarnesti, Prejmer, etc.).
