Herbstreise durch die Süd-Eifel | ARD Reisen
Zu Fuß lässt sich die südliche Eifel am besten erobern: Daniel Aßmann wandert durch herbstlich leuchtende Wälder, vorbei an Streuobstwiesen, und in der engen Teufelsschlucht nahe der luxemburgischen Grenze sogar über den Grund eines Millionen Jahre alten Meeres.
Der Film wurde vor der Flutkatastrophe 2021 produziert. Alle gezeigten Wanderungen und Orte wurden nicht in Mitleidenschaft gezogen oder sind in diesem Video entsprechend gekennzeichnet.
Ein Rundwanderweg führt Daniel Aßmann zum Fuß des 40 Meter hohen Basaltlavasteinbruchs Ettringer Lay bei Mayen-Koblenz. In Gerolstein trinkt er an einer berühmten Mineralwasserquelle, bevor er sich auf dem Felsenpfad in die dortigen Dolomiten begibt. In Prüm und Adenau wird es historisch. Danach warten entlang der Wanderwege kleine und große Abenteuer: Fliegenfischen mit einem Dreisternekoch, ein Ausritt mit Maultieren, ein Besuch beim letzten Mausefallenbauer von Neroth. Und auf der Kasselburg schenkt Daniel Aßmann einem Turmfalken die Freiheit.

Prüm in der Westeifel
Das im Zweiten Weltkrieg fast völlig zerstörte Prüm hat heute gut 5.000 Einwohner und ist der Mittelpunkt im Westen der Eifel. Zur Stadt gehören heute die acht eingemeindete Ortsteile. Prüm ist heute eine lebhafte Einkaufsstadt, die von der alten Basilika mit den Abteigebäuden im Zentrum beherrscht wird. Viele Geschäfte und gute Gastronomie laden zum Bummeln und Verweilen ein. Für Übernachtungen stehen Hotels, Pensionen, Ferienwohnungen und eine Jugendherberge bereit.
Die Ursprünge Prüms gehen auf die Gründung eines Klosters im Jahr 721 zurück. Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts wurde die heutige Basilika unter Verwendung älterer Bauteile aus Buntsandstein aus dem Kylltal errichtet. Der Bau ist ca. 64,50 Meter lang und ca. 28 Meter breit. Zwei 62 Meter hohe Türme krönen die Westseite. Der Innenraum der dreischiffigen Basilika ist der Nachgotik zuzuordnen. Der heute dominierende düstere barocke Hochaltar von 1727 stammt ursprünglich aus der Karmeliterkirche in Bad Kreuznach und wurde 1926 in Prüm aufgestellt.
Beim Abbau des alten Hochaltares wurden 1860 die Gebeine Kaiser Lothars aufgefunden, der zum Ende seiner wilden Tage ins Prümer Kloster als Mönch eintrat. Er konnte nicht lange sühnen, denn er verstarb bereits sechs Tage später. Mit finanzieller Unterstützung Kaiser Wilhelms I. wurde 1875 sein Grabmal im Chor errichtet.
Sehenswert im Innenraum der Prümer Basilika ist das Chorgestühl der Originalausstattung mit Darstellungen aus der Geschichte des Benediktinerordens. Auch die Sandsteinkanzel mit ihren vier Relieftafeln, 1590 in Trier geschaffen, gehört zu den Highlights im Innenraum.
Die nach Entwürfen von Balthasar Neumann ab 1721 neben der Kirche errichteten barocken Abteigebäude sind ein weiteres Schmuckstück von Prüm. Besonders der reich geschmückte Nordeingang ist ein Meisterwerk des Barocks. Ein Gymnasium ist heute in den Klostergebäuden untergebracht.
Prüm wurde am 15. Juli 1949 von einer weiteren gewaltigen Explosion erschüttert. Die in einem Stollen unter dem Kalvarienberg von französischen Truppen gelagerten 500 Tonnen Sprengstoff, die zur Sprengung der Westwallbunker vorgesehen waren, explodierten und verwüsteten viele der nach dem Krieg gerade wieder aufgebauten Häuser. 12 Tote und viele Verletzte waren zu beklagen. Der gewaltige 20 Meter tiefe Krater mit seinem Kreuz ist noch heute auf dem Kalvarienberg zu sehen.
Rund um Prüm gibt es viel Natur mit romantischen Wälder und Täler, Bächen und kleinen Seen. Gut ausgebaute Wanderwege wie die Eifeltouren oder die Vulkaneifel-Pfade bieten kurze oder lange Strecken.
