10 Worst Towns to Live in Wales

What are the worst towns to live in Wales? We don’t want to make it boring. Otherwise, we would have listed all the towns in Wales in the order of how they are considered good. Even if we could do that, some people may view such a listing as conjectural. Towns considered good by a reviewer may be seen as bad by another. But then, for the sake of this production, let’s assume that all the towns in Wales are good. But they can’t all be equally good. If some had higher degrees of goodness, yes, they are better. And if some towns are better than others, the logic follows that some are worse. On that positive note, let’s discuss the 10 worst towns to live in Wales.

10. Ebbw Vale
Ebbw Vale, the town at the head of the valley which is formed by the Ebbw Fawr tributary of the Ebbw River is the largest town in Blaenau Gwent county borough. Its direct access to the A465 Heads of the Valleys trunk road doesn’t make it a good place to live in Wales. The town bordering the Brecon Beacons National Park Ebbw Vale isn’t economically viable with the second-lowest mean salary in Britain. In fact, for the people to survive, 5 food banks are operating in the community. This has also affected the town educationally. This is indicated by its having the worst GCSE results in Wales. Meanwhile, Ebbw Vale is the town with the cheapest home price in England and Wales as no one would be willing to buy a home in a place very bad to live in.
9. Pontypool
As we think about Pontypool, we’re filled with the emotion of love for the residents of the people. No, this doesn’t mean we love to live among them or envy their situation. We only salute their resilience that makes them remain in a town without no places to visit, no nightlife, no restaurants and bars, and with zero social life. This administrative center of the county borough of Torfaen has nothing like a sense of community. Ironically, there’s no privacy in this town as almost everyone will notice your presence or absence. Your financial status is in public knowledge. Care needs to be taken in such a town to select a date if you don’t want to have an incestuous amorous affair.
8. Llangefni
The case of Llangefni, the county town of Anglesey, whose name in Welsh means meaning “church on the River Cefni,” is pathetic. The town which is home to the principal offices of the Isle of Anglesey County Council and the second largest settlement in that county has too many bad reviews. But to stay on a kinder side, we would side with those who consider it one of the worst Welsh towns to live because of the number of old people in the town. The town is actually gradually taking up the appearance of old peoples’ homes as it has a higher percentage of older people. That should tell you that the town is boring and is economically disadvantaged. The town’s unemployment rate is higher than the national average.
7. Port Talbot
What image does the name of the town, Port Talbot evoke? If you choose to turn a blind eye to the negatives, you are likely to see a town and community of the home of one of the biggest steelworks in the world. That is cute. But that economic opportunity which covers a large area of land, dominating the southeast of the town does not come without a cost for the town. The environmental pollution this has caused for the town some 13 kilometers from Swansea has made it one of the worst places to live. The town is filled with the stench from this and other dirt dominating the place.
6. Llantwit Major
Our attention is now on Llantwit Major, a community on the Bristol Channel coast. This is one of 4 towns in the Vale of Glamorgan. The community located about 7.2 kilometers from Cowbridge, 14 kilometers from Bridgend, 16 kilometers from Barry, and 24 kilometers from Cardiff has not allowed these nice locations to rub off on it. It is one of the 10 worst places in Wales on this list for anyone who cares about safety. The crime rate there is rather on the high side and this is obviously inimical a good living. We would recommend living in any other place in Wales before mentioning Llantwit Major.

Visit Bridgend Travel Tourism Video (English subtitles)

Bridgend County offers distinctive experiences for the group travel market. Its central position along the South Wales coast means it can easily be combined with other areas, from the rural Wye Valley to the bright lights of the capital city of Cardiff.

Tour operators, group travel organisers and the UK travel trade are invited along on a virtual road trip featuring Porthcawl and the surrounding coast and countryside of Bridgend County.

Follow host Steve Reed around the highways and byways of this attractive and often undiscovered part of the UK and explore numerous group venues, hotels and scenic sites.

Take in a variety of group attractions including Ewenny Pottery; Parc Slip Nature Reserve; Rest Bay Watersports Centre; Porthcawl Grand Pavilion; Porthcawl Museum; Finnegans Fish and Chip Restaurant and Pyle Garden Village.

You’ll also see some great hotels in the area showcased here, including the Best Western Heronston Hotel in Bridgend; the Seabank Hotel in Porthcawl and the Great House Hotel and Restaurant in the village of Laleston.

Well known Southern Wales coach and tour operator Cresta Coaches, seen here driving along Porthcawl’s stunning seafront, regularly bring groups to the area to enjoy all that’s on offer!

Porthcawl To The Blue Anchor - 21 Miles OnThe Wales Coast Path Towards CARDIFF

Walking East from Porthcawl towards Cardiff on the Wales Coast Path.

Another long walk along the Wales Coast Path but this time heading east through the Vale of Glamorgan and the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.

No destination planned but just to see how far I get and which pub I would end up in.

It turned out to be the Blue Anchor Inn, East Aberthaw in the Vale of Glamorgan. It was established in 1380 and is one of the oldest pubs in Wales.

It is also 21 miles away from Porthcawl along the Wales Coast Path. Luckily I had time for one drink before Mel picked me up in the car.

The distance from Porthcawl to Cardiff along the coast path is 46 miles, a bit too far for me in a day.

This part of the Wales Coast Path from Porthcawl follows the coastline all the way except at high tide when you have to cross the Ogmore River at Merthyr Mawr.

Britain from Above - Best places to visit in Britain: Tenby WALES ( view in 2K HD )

Film uploaded to view in 2K HD ( filmed in 5K HD )
Tenby (Welsh: Dinbych-y-pysgod, meaning fortlet of the fish)
TENBY is a walled seaside town in Pembrokeshire, Wales, on the western side of Carmarthen Bay, and the name for the local government community of Tenby.

Notable features of Tenby include 2.5 miles (4.0 km) of sandy beaches; the 13th century medieval town walls, including the Five Arches barbican gatehouse; the 15th century St. Mary's Church; the Tudor Merchant's House (National Trust); Tenby Museum and Art Gallery; and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, part of Wales' only coastal National Park.
Boats sail from Tenby's harbour to the offshore monastic Caldey Island, while St Catherine's Island is a tidal island.
The town is served by Tenby railway station.

Porthcawl To Swansea - 23 MILES On The Wales Coast Path South Wales

Walking a stretch of the Wales Coast Path, South Wales on one of the hottest days of the year.
From Porthcawl to Swansea waterfront through 3 counties.

The direct route is about 18 miles but the coastal path is 23 miles long. Due to Port Talbot steel works and docks and Swansea docks, there are sections which have inland diversions.

On the way, you pass long sandy beaches, sand dunes, industrial towns and old canals.

The coastal walk took me 9 and a half hours but that included filming and stopping for lunch. You can do it in 8 hours.

The path was clearly signposted throughout the trip.

Porthcawl South Wales

Porthcawl, Mid Glamorgan, South Wales UK

Porthcawl Walk: Town Centre & Beach【4K】

Located on the south coast of Wales in the county borough of Bridgend (historically in Mid Glamorgan) and around 25 miles west of Cardiff, is the town of Porthcawl.

Geographically Porthcawl is situated on a low headland overlooking the Bristol Channel, roughly halfway between Cardiff and Swansea. The name 'Porthcawl' is believed to mean either 'harbour of the sea kale' or 'harbour of the Gauls'.

Up until the early 19th century, Porthcawl as a settlement did not exist, save for a few neighbouring villages. In the 1820s a decision was made to build a harbour to service the expanding coal and iron industries of the South Wales valleys. Thus, Porthcawl became the terminus for a horse-drawn tramway for the transportation of these goods.

In 1853 railway industrialist John Brogden bought a controlling interest in the iron works in Tondu, near Bridgend, and, together with his four sons, enlarged the Porthcawl Dock with the addition
of an Inner Dock Basin in 1867. However, fierce competition from nearby docks, including Cardiff, Barry, Port Talbot and Swansea, meant that Porthcawl's industrial future was limited, and its docks eventually closed shortly after the beginning of the 20th century.

Despite the demise of its docks, Porthcawl was able to reinvent itself as a seaside resort. In 1887 the promenade was built to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Since 1865 visitors could arrive here by train following the conversion of its earlier tramway into a railway. However, it was not until after the First World War that Porthcawl saw significant expansion. In 1920 Coney Beach Pleasure Park opened. Situated just east of the town centre, it is home to over 20 attractions including two roller coasters. In 1932 the Grand Pavilion Theatre was built on the seafront, where it stands to this day.

Porthcawl suffered a setback in 1963 with the closure of its railway station due to an alleged lack of ticket sales. Today the town is accessible via a bus service from Cardiff which also stops at Bridgend Bus Station.

Despite its controversial rail closure, Porthcawl remains a popular seaside resort. It is home to Trecco Bay which contains over 2000 static caravans, making it Europe's largest caravan park. This is situated next to Coney Beach Pleasure Park, and within walking distance to the town centre.

Porthcawl Bank Holiday - Sun, Beaches And Parking Tickets

It’s the bank holiday weekend in Porthcawl. The weather forecast is surprisingly good, the bars and cafes are open. Will the crowds return to Porthcawl?

If you’re not from the UK a bank holiday is a type of public holiday.

At the start of the weekend, I take a walk around Porthcawl and its beaches and see how it compares with the bank holiday itself when the sun actually comes out. What about the car parks, will people flood back to the beaches or will they be more cautious.

It’s not only the sun that is about to make an appearance, the motorists friend, the traffic wardens are also returning too.

The Welsh seaside, here are the places I visit over the weekend

NOT So “Sunny” Porthcawl - A Bank Holiday Walk In Wales

Another walk in Porthcawl along the promenade and over the common to the beach at Rest Bay.
When you’ve had a few weeks of sun it’s only a matter of time before those Atlantic southwesterly winds return.

Typically the weather changes, just in time for the bank holiday.

It’s the same walk to Rest Bay as last week, it’s about 1.5 miles (3miles) return.
Last week’s walk in the sun:

It may not be “Sunny Porthcawl” but like many Welsh seaside towns, there is something incredible about looking at the sky and sea when there’s a storm approaching.
Just a shame the pubs weren’t open so you could sit in the warmth watching the rain and wind outside.
